Posters who believe we are after everyone the shite papers say we are and then complain at our actual signings are completely baffling.

Stop listening and hoping for rumours and get excited when you see something concrete like this.

If we manage to snap this guy and Vidal it would be a great summer.

As long as he's only backup for Evans, Jones and Smalling I don't see the problem, I suspect Vermaelen was only our first choice due to his PL experience
Because we need to be getting a top quality defender in! 16 million quid on an (apparently) average defender isn't much improvement. Our defence is arguably the worst part of the team, even more so with the most experienced players leaving this window.

Wow, surprised at all the negativity about him on here. Admittedly I have only seen him playing in the World Cup (not in his best position by all accounts) but I thought he was one of the better players in that tournament. Good age, versatile, room to develop further, decent price in today's climate....what's not to like?
That s quite common over here, some people waste no time throwing the toys out the pram as soon as we sign someone not on their pre approved shopping list.
Next step would be, wanting him to fail so that they would be proven right...

Have we not been grooming Smalling and Jones to take over from Rio and Vidic?

15 million Euros i think. I think Benficas share was 6 million euros as 50% was supposed to go to Madrid and some to someone else.

Anyway, it may have been more adding in previous adjustments as they obviously wanted to reduce the fee going to Real.

Ah, I see, still a good deal mind you.

Thats the trouble most of the time, papers want to sell so will make up stories, how many of the players we have been linked have we actually put in bids for?

Yeah. Of course papers are going to link us to the best players of their position. I don't understand how anyone can really be unhappy with this signing (if it does happen). He was very good in Brazil.

I see people comparing him with Benatia but you have to remember that Benatia only achieved his potential the last two years at 25 years old. For all we know Rojos could become our brand new Vidic and become a top player.

I dont think its Benatia precisely that people actually want, its just a "big name" player. Id imagine less than 10% of the caf watch the seria A regularly to even know how great he is, let alone watch enough Roma matches.

If the mentality was the same around the time Vidic signed, you would have seen the same posts.

They're no where near there yet, though. I rate Smalling defensively but he's woeful with his feet. Jones is half decent at both, master of none and extremely clumsy at times.

Because he's literally not one of the top 5 players in the world for his position. He's not a "fashionable" choice.

I have confidence in our scouting that he'll be fine. We only need numbers in defense, I'm happy with Jones/Smalling/Evans/Rojo/Blackett to be honest.

So first news on Rojo coming to United was him following United players on instagram?
All the twitter liars and ITKs and journos knew nothing?

I'm feeling very positive about this transfer as it shows a) Van Gaal's transfers are based on a clear plan and b) the media are getting sweet F.A. until talks are well advanced.

Van Gaal said in the States he wanted defenders, and it's been rumoured from day one he wanted a left sided centre back hence the Vermaelen chase. There's no randomness about the move for Rojo, splashing cash and figuring how to make the player fit after. Van Gaal has a vision of how he wants the team to play and he's buying round pegs for round holes.

Ain't seen much of Rojo outside of the World Cup, but our scouts or Van Gaal's contacts must've seen something in him to pursue this. Hopeful.

Well what do we do then? Never make them first choice? How are they going to improve?

Looks like the club's CB wish list read like 1. Hummels 2. Vermaelen 3. Rojo

The club have moved quickly and quietly this week once Vermaelen finalized his move to Barcelona. I've seen little of the player so I'll wait to pass judgment, but I like that the club seems to have done it's homework on positions of need. If we somehow manage to sign Vidal and Cuadrado that would be an amazing summer.

The major thing I'm worried about is that I was taking the piss out of my Southampton supporting mate who was excited about potentially getting Rojo, and I was saying he's not that good at all

Now he's here :nervous:

IF we sign Rojo we've signed three first choice-ish players for around 85 million you'd presume. I think that would be a decent summer anyway to be honest.

Would be happy enough with this, we need another option or two at centre back if LVG goes the three at the back, he's versatile and weighs in with a few goals it seems, he's only 24

We have kept Jones and Smalling under the blanket for the past three seasons, both have played more game at alien positions than in the one they feel the best in (although I believe you consider Jones a midfielder not defender). It's about time we gave them a proper go in central defence, both are experienced enough.

Good signing if you ask me, he had a good WC and he's exactly what we need. Left footed CB who can cover LWB too as I understand.
Sure, his name isnt as strong as Benatia's or Hummels so I expect people to moan of course..

Sorry in my opinion fans have every right to be a little upset with the actual status, especially after Woodward comments. We’ve lost loads of experience and leaders, and we all know how weak our midfield is.

We have 3 senior CBs 4 days before our first game, and we’re playing 3 at the back. This is stupidity at this point. Sorry I’m little pissed, I don’t mind signing Rojo but this should be done much, much earlier.

Good assessment. I agree completely.

I think getting in a top defender for the two of them to play along side in a 3-at-the-back formation would be ideal. Playing next to a quality centre back in his prime would be brilliant for Jones/Smalling and would completely sure up the defence.

I have no problems with Smalling and Jones being our two main centre backs a long with Evans, but bringing a great defender in to the squad would do the team brilliantly.

He doesn't really impress me but for a back of LWB I don't really care.
I don't thik he will be LWB but more Left Central Defender with Blackett as his back up and Evans if necessary. I think 2 of Evans, Jones, Smalling and Thorpe will be the right and central defenders

Stop this strawman. Previous weeks when we were linked with Vermaelen do you think some were against it because he was not a big name? In this case people do not want Rojo because they do not rate him it is that simple.

He's a CB, LWB is his second position.

AH well, fair enough. Same's true for there. Wasn't it him in the world cup basically that played at left wing for Argentina? Always looked very far forward so surprised to see he's actually a centre back by trade.

But they've never fecking seen him! The only two posters in this thread from Portugal rate him.

Yes, he played in all 6 of the games he played.

He is a left-footbed CB that can cover LWB, I've not seen enough of him to judge, but at 24years and a lot of experience I hope he can still improve under LVG.

Most on here will have watched Vermaelen regularly to see how mediocre (and injury prone) he is.

We probably have about 3 posters who've followed this guy closely.
