Hi everyone newbie here, so please go easy on me in case you don't agree with my views on this guy.
I have a friend who supports Sporting, and he always tells me that Ugarte was the main reason, Palhinha lost the spot in the starting 11. He was a monster in their midfield and was quite unlucky, that his best season with Sporting coincided with their worst under Amorim.
We often see gaping holes in our midfield during games. Those cease to exist with him. Fans and pundits alike have become obsessed with Busquets and Rodri clones these days. Not every DM is going to dictate or control the tempo from deep. Those guys are specialists. This guy is a pure dm. A defensive midfielder in the truest sense of the word. Perhaps a ball winning midfielder because he's aggressive and won't just passively sit. The guy is a machine. A a player to let Mainoo do his thing while Ugarte is shepherding the midfield. We could do with an aggressive, fit, reliable ball winner with legs, who can plug gaps so that Mainoo and others dont have have to. Ugarte is elite at that. One of the best around right now at what he does. No, he's not going to dictate the tempo from midfield like Rodri, but who else can? Those are generational players, suitable to play a very specific setup. In Ugarte, we can have a dm who will protect the backline, and solidify the midfield like no other.
I can see him easily having the same impact Palhinha had, when he came to the PL, smashing all the tackles records. Plus, he is somewhat better on the ball than Palhinha and overall a better player. However he is much more a destroyer than a playmaker, but with Bruno and Mainoo, I think that has potential to be a very effective midfield three.
I am optimistic about this signing.
