Manuel Neuer

How do you know?

Because im old enough to work out that losing 2 keepers and replacing them with 1 leaves you short in the keeper department, plus i listen to what the manager says, this helps in such situations.

Let me put it another way, do you honestly think Sir alex would willingly go into next season with Lindegaard and Amos our 2 keepers? a new recruit from the Norwegian league and a kid whos clearly not ready for such a role? i mean seriously give the man some credit at least.

So this means its end of the road for PIG. Hopefully we sign Neuer and Lindegaard could be his able deputy.

PIG will leave if he is not given a first team chance. What makes you think that SAF is not considering letting PIG/Lindaguy compete for VDS role?

(Bold part) I cant imagine United signing some new recruit from lets say Bronby and end up first teamer goalkeeper. I mean, lets face it, that would be hilarious.

I would be in dreamland if we yonked both him and Schweinstiger off a massively underperforming Bayern side, but it'll probably never happen.

Personally I rate Neuer higher than Adler(not because of that Youtube clip). Given how shit Schalke are, I believe he'd want out in the summer and with his contract running out we could get him on the cheap.

I don't believe Schalke can gain EURO spots. They have been fecking awful..

A colleague at work is a proud owner of VIP seats at the Schalke Arena, and usually sits with some pretty important people that have close connections to staff from Schalke 04.

He went to see them play on Saturday evening - beat Bayern Munich 2-0 - and said that he heard word that Manuel Neuer will leave Schalke at the end of the season. He went on to say that he is definitely Bayern Munich bound. To which I replied, that I'd like him at United, however, he quickly extinguished my hopes and even offered me a bet worth a 100 Euros, predicting that Neuer will pull on the Bayern goalie shirt come next season.

I'm still tempted - but he was spot on with Raúl this summer and I'm afraid of losing the hundred... :nervous:

He was great vs Bayern. Schalke had nothing really in the first half and he kept the score clean for half time.

Manuel Neuer still in Manchester United frame as keeper hits out at bogus Bayern Munich claims

Manuel Neuer has dismissed claims that he has already chosen to move to Bayern Munich ahead of Manchester United.

However, the Germany goalkeeper is ready to play his suitors off each other after calling on Schalke to make him an improved contract offer.

The 24-year-old is enjoying a rich vein of personal form, which has helped Schalke show signs that they can mix it with the best in Germany and fulfil his ambition.

'I assume that next season I'll play for Schalke,' he said after inspiring his side to a 1-0 win at high-flying Mainz on Saturday. 'As soon as Schalke make me an offer, I'll talk first to Schalke.'

However, with his current deal set to run till the end of next season, he warned: 'Nothing is certain.'

Reports in Germany at the end of the last week claimed a move to Bayern was sewn up, but the Bavarian giants' sporting director Christian Nerlinger insisted at the weekend: 'We have never discussed the issue of Neuer.'

There is little doubt that the German champions' interest in Neuer is genuine, but the club are wary that boss Louis van Gaal wants to give 22-year-old Thomas Kraft a chance to prove he can step up.

Sir Alex Ferguson is keen on Neuer as a replacement for Holland veteran Edwin van der Sar after indicating that Denmark international Anders Lindegaard won't be the only new arrival between the posts.

But United are also watching other targets and Schalke's turn of form could convince Neuer to stay put.

A second-place finish in the Bundesliga provided Champions League this season and wins on the bounce against Bayern and Mainz has catapulted them from the edge of the relegation zone to the top half of the table.
Dunno if this has been done already, and the fact there is no actual quote with regards to us. Just thought it might be interesting. It is the Mail though.

Manchester United in pole position to land Schalke No1 | talkSPORT

Bayern Munich are interested in Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg - leaving Manchester United in pole position to land Manuel Neuer.

talkSPORT exclusively revealed back in September that United were ready to sign Anders Lindegaard and although the move will be made official in January, Sir Alex Ferguson is still on the lookout for another goalkeeper.

Edwin Van Der Sar is set to retire at the end of the season and Ferguson wants sufficient back-up in the goalkeeping area to make the transition smooth.

Top of his list is Schalke star Neuer, part of the Germany side that humiliated England at this summer's World Cup.

Neuer, 24, is one of the most sought after goalkeepers in Europe and Bayern were keen on landing him but sources close to the staunch Schalke fan claim he is not ready to leave the club for a German rival.

United are aware of this and Neuer reportedly told friends in Germany he would never consider a move to the Allianz Arena - and now Bayern are ready to turn their attention to Dutchman Stekelenburg.

All right, we'll sign Neuer and De Gea. We'd have the set of keepers in the world.

I highly doubt Bayern want Stekelenburg over Neuer.

Whether talksport are talking bollocks or not, that's not what they're saying. If Neuer really didn't want to move to Bayern, there's not much they can do about it.

I think I'd personally feel more comfortable with us getting Neuer than De Gea. I have no idea who would turn out a better signing for us, but I think at this point Neuer has been more widely tested, so maybe he's less likely to turn out to be a dud.

His form has been decent apart from that one blip against West Brom. He does have personal issues with regards to his sick wife though so I think its highly unlikely he will stay. Lets hope we send him off with number 19.

I had that West Brom blip in my mind when I posted, pure one-off that. SAF said something to that effect too.

Could well understand his personal reasons but if it came down to pure ability I'd be very happy to see him in sticks for another season.

Not that that should stop us signing another top keeper of course.

Lets hope we send him off with number 19.

Or even another CL medal.

Does anyone feel VDS has another season in him after this one ?

He's showing no signs of deterioration in form this season as far as I can see. The bloke's in great shape.

Fergie has said he'll retire in the Summer. He said he was in great shape but Edwin's concerned about being able to maintain any level of form now he's past 40 and he doesn't want to still be playing when his form deteriorates beyond repair.

But that's the thing, his form hasn't dropped. If anything he gets better.

Shilts and Zoff played on well past 40.

That's the point, he wants to go before his form does drop.

He'll be gone in the Summer.

:lol::lol:

i see now sign of his form dropping though

who's to say that he can't maintain his level of performance (as one of the best keepers in the world) for another year

i'd love him to stay for one more but i think he will hang up his gloves - wasn't there an announcement about him wanting to spend time with his wife???

It would be nice for him to stay another year. It has its pros and cons. If he stays, we won't have to spend 10-15M on a GK this summer but as he gets older, his reflex gets slower. You might not notice it easily but sometimes there is a chance of him being slow to react. He is already 40. I don't know how his reflexes are going to be a year from now when he is 41.

On the other hand, if we miss out on Neuer this summer, then there is a chance of him moving to another team if Schalke don't make Europe. I m pretty sure a lot of teams want him and he will be ready to move.

Honestly unless Schalke and Neuer are offered a deal they can't refuse, I can't see it happening. For Neuer has been acting like a dude asked out by the ugliest girl at school every time Bayern have shown interest or been linked with him thus far.

All right, we'll sign Neuer and De Gea. We'd have the set of keepers in the world.

Personally I have my doubts if De Gea really is better than Lindegaard... If De Gea joins us, I am really concerned on how he would do in the box, because he will get tested a lot harder in England than in Spain. Of course Norwegian league will not test the pace of attack as in England or in Spain, but you will be tested in the box in Norway, so I know that Lindegaard masters that... But he has impressed at International level as well. I really look forward to see Lindegaard because he might be a bargain. All I know for sure, is that Lindegaard really is above the level of the Norwegian league, he belongs in one of the big leagues.

Both Neuer or Adler seems to be a better bargains than De Gea as far as I am concerned.

I'm not sure on De Gea myself, but come on, you're saying De Gea wasn't proven because he's playing in Spain compared to Lindegaard who plays in Norwegian league??

Besides, we have VDS as mentor, i'm sure anything technical he can teach a trick or two, but these reflex, instict, and most of all confidence is the few quality our keepers have been lack of for a while.

Look at Forster, Howard for example, they have no problem playing for lesser teams, they're not buffon but they're doing the job, and if not for VDS we could snatch them based on their performance with their respective club.

It's mentality, more than technical imo. At least De Gea is proven on that department.

Just a note for the people discussing VDS playing on past 40, it's been acknowledged that he could definitely do this physically but, I think it was Ferguson that said, he wants to give his wife the quality time with him she deserves after all she has been through with her illness in the last couple of years.

That's the point, he wants to go before his form does drop.

He'll be gone in the Summer.

But he could be 42/43 before his form drops significantly.

He's only 40 ffs, same age as me, he's doing a superb job and he's in great shape.

It's up to him of course and his personal life but the bottom line, if he announced in January he would be staying another season the vast majority of fans would be delighted.

Yep point taken. It's his decision.

So did Jennings, but the reactions were definitely not as sharp as they used to be. Obviously a keeper can play for longer because they don't have to run around as much but there comes a time when the reactions start to get slower and the will to throw yourself around a hard pitch wavers. Personally i think if he's made the decision to retire in the summer then we should say thanks & good luck then move on

That's all we can do really, wish him all the best. He'll be missed, it's a big transition integrating a new keeper into the side, especially replacing one as comfortable with the ball at his feet - those kind aren't ten a penny.

Yep, bringing this thread back on topic, I can appreciate this point.

It's all about the mental strength IMHO. Of course keepers need to be quite good at aahm keeping actually, but if you're mentally weak you can't nail down the goalkeeping spot at Manchester United on a long-term basis. Just look at Foster, he's doing fantastically at Birmingham - there was never any doubt about his abilities as a keeper, but mentally he's not fit to become number 1 at a club of the top tier.
Neuer definitely has the mental strength, the guy excels at the biggest stages as far as we know (e.g. for the national team and in the Champions League so far)
