Manchester United vs Dortmund (Mon 31st July, 02:00 UK time)

Williams and Lindelof for goals 1 and 2. Williams didnt give the ball away but lunged in and lost his man
Oh yeah I was wondering who that was for the first goal
Lindelof I quite like so sad that he made the biggest error really.

He’s a number 8 midfielder that isn’t his primary job in this team.
He still needs 6/7 PL goals that’s he’s remit goal scoring Midfielder, he played ok and his reverse passes were decent but we need goals from all over the team.

Some big missed chances but we are playing some divine football compared to previous seasons.

Onana is incredible, Mount finds tidy passes that cut teams open, I really fancy Hojlund will make teams play deep too because Onana is capable of pin point long balls. With his and Rashfords pace it's a big concern for other teams.

Genuinely feeling with a few sales and a player like Amrabat coming in were in a good place for the coming season.

Even take Evans on a free and sell some deadwood and we will be golden.

Genuinely optimistic about this season.

He will get that I’m sure. Seen him cropping up in the box already during pre-season so it only takes afew to land for him. But overall he will be judged by how much control he brings to the midfield which is his primary role.

For those that don’t think Hojland will score though, just watch some of the moves with Hugill towards the end. With better strikers instinct he’s ahead of his man from the left footed Rashford cross, and I’d fancy a top striker to bury that later chance, either by dinking the keeper or taking it round him. There are chances on offer for a good striker, let’s hope that is Hojland.

Be interesting to see what we do in terms of selection for the Lens & Bilbao games

Our style of play is chaotic, isn’t it? Vertical vertical vertical all the time. No emphasis on controlling the game at all. Players like Bruno, Rashford even Casemiro give the ball away for fun all the time. I was hoping there would be a change in style, not dramatic but a slight change in controlling the game but nope. Still the same. I don’t think we can go far this season with this kind of football. I don’t trust players like Bruno one bit in taking care of the ball.
Spot on. Far too chaotic and not very smart if I must say. The ball is like a hot potato. Martinez aside, not one other player adept at keeping the ball. Then you combine that with the massive chasms between the defense and the midfield, because when the CBs have the ball absolutely everyone pushes up, and this means that when we give the ball away in our own half (which is very often) the consequences are near fatal. Just don't understand it. This kind of style cannot work.

Yeah I know it's only YT but you can see he has shown evidence of that instinct to meet crosses

I actually thought he played well, seems quicker and more agile at 35 then Lindelof. He was getting into the midfield well as well. I'd give him a contract for the year.

Can't believe Hugill didnt round the keeper there, take it to your left and tap-in. I can't imagine a better scenario to round to keeper with the pace of the ball, the angle and distance.

He tries his best, but clearly will never make it here and it has been evident for years. Wonder how it isn't possible for the club to find a good CF prospect around the age of 18, just to keep holding unto McNeil and Hugill.

Yeap. Hojlund will get a lot of tap-ins with the way we are playing. I can see the majority of his goals will be within the 6-yard box.

So what should we do differently?

ETH looked very unhappy. As he should be. This has to improve.
In all honesty, I think he knows Onana will revolutionise the team but there will be teething problems, both defences were too low and not high enough and the midfield too close to the defence and not close enough to our attackers, this is going to take time but I also think Mainoo first two matches displays held the team together, we might have to think differently in all away games, providing we buy S Amrabat I’d like to see the team change for the Arsenal and Spurs Games 4231 with Onana, AWB, Varane, L Martinez, L Shaw, Casemeiro, S Amrabat* (if signed), Mount, Bruno(RW), R Hojlund, Rashford ;
Subs - T Heaton, V Lindelof, D Dalot, Ericsen, S McTominay, Martial, Sancho, Garnaucho, Antony

Maguire just has to go, leave him out the squad for a few match games should go the trick!

We wont keep a clean sheet though, we let in so many goals
Well DDG managed it last season more than any other PL keeper with these defenders in front of him, if he can do that so can Onana

It feels so odd seeing it in the team!

When I watch United, I expect certain things to happen in certain situations. Mount and Onana are already turning that completely on its head.
The ETH plan. Onana finds Mount, Mount plays it through to Hujland is going to be a common path of our shots on goals.

No Bruno at RW please it just kills the creativity in the middle. That pass to Hugill was all Bruno. Drop Mount if needed

This is my take too, I'm really surprised by the moaning in here. The build up patterns look amazing, pressing was great, new signings looking solid. How do you complain after a game like that?

I know its just a friendly, but I am concerned that Rashford just isn't there at the moment. Looked disinterested throughout the game.

TBF Ericsen was very good in the first half he was controlling the tempo and the game for 40 minutes while Mctominay and DVB both played ok, strangely enough we had more control in midfield in first 40 mins.

I thought we dominated them and conceded 3 of the worst goals you'll see.

For the people complaining about lack of control, we pretty much controlled the tempo the entire game. We just had 3 awful mistakes leading to goals.

And the less said about our decision making/chance conversion in the final 3rd, the better.

Some positive signs, but we'll have to get better at conversion when the season starts.

Hes played around 120 minutes. Just allow a few games to get going. This is all about match fitness.

The sports scientists and ETH know far more than we do.

He’s played for England and the WC long season, he’s partied in Miami, just needs to get match fit, he’s signed a new contract, ETH will not allow him to be complacent as Garnaucho, Sancho, Pelistri are all options right now to play instead of him.

The first thing we should have done was to concentrate on bringing in midfielders who are good on the ball and can control tempo but given that we did not do that, our approach has to change because I don't think we have the money now to sign the personnel needed. The gaps between the midfield and the defense when we have the ball has to narrow significantly. It's too big. That's why we are in scramble mode when the ball is given away because 80% of the team is so far upfield. And Ten Hag has to instruct the midfielders to be positionally disciplined and keep it simple on the ball. Stay in your position unless there is a real chance to score and pass to the open man. Leave the attacking and risk taking to the front 4.

We always seemed to have excellent results post SAF era during preseason. Even last year because most of these seasons most worked on plan A first team mainly. This year seems rather refreshing the manager trying different things and combinations. Results haven’t been great but weirdly enough I feel more confident we will be ready for the start of the season this time around

ETH just ripped the last half a hour apart, everything about it basically

"The last half an hour, it was bad, a poor performance. They didn't follow the rules at all, not in pressing, not in building-up or when attacking. They were 11 individuals on the pitch. That wasn't good at all."

Yeah I have seen many people on here say that the second XI outperformed the first XI

Who should we have signed?

Onana's passing and bollocking of Maguire was the highlight of the game.
Justified and a long time coming. But Maguire is a “protected” person. The media and pundits have his back, don’t be surprised if the knives come out for Onana. “Ohhh his to much of a risk taker” “ohh he’s going to cost United goals”.

Saw a YouTube clip from ESPN they had 3 British pundits in the studio and Frank le Bouef on the monitor. The pundits were all very careful about how they spoke about Maguire, basically said he was world class but lost confidence and needed to move.

Le Bouef starts talking and you see what Europeans think of him. He literally just about stopped himself from saying Maguire is “sh.t” it went like this “his too sh(stops)…. to still play in defence, he should try playing in midfield see if that works” “if I was s chairman I wouldn’t buy him”

I know it’s only pre season but played 2 decent teams and lost them both…

Played every decent team in 2014 pre-season and won. And we know how we started that season.

Results are irrelevant. All about fitness and bedding in tactical ideas.
