Manchester United upgrade contact with Pep Guardiola, sources say

Wouldn't surprise me if we end up losing the chance to sign either Pep or Ancelotti. Is Moyes available?

What if we haven't approached him at all? How will he choose us over city then?

All this speculation is assuming that we have an understanding with LVG in place who will leave after this season. Currently, we have the more stable and safe (arguably) manager and City might have showed a lot of interest since the last few months. On the other hand, all he has from the United side is a lunch date with SAF who asked him to call him before making a decision.

Unless we are making a formal approach, he is never going to call us up to check "Hey, by the way guys, are you looking for a new manager?".

I think the job of bringing united back to the top of European football would be more interesting than helping city chip away at the nouveau riche tag. United can offer him the same spending power and we all know he's one to admire the bigger clubs.

Also i dont this BS about not upsetting his friends, all top managers dream of managing top clubs, and its well documented that pep has admired united since his playing days.

We should go all out for him, and while he might yet end up at city, i don't think is that much of a long shot to say he might end up here.

Bookmarking this for potential blue meltdown scenario.

Feel free.

I'm expecting a red meltdown on a scale that will make any potential blue one quite insignificant.

I think United are just clickbait in this situation. It's one of the downsides having having the most fans I'm afraid.

To borrow a phrase from a Real Madrid president I don't like very much:
Pep was born to manage Manchester United.

If we haven't even approached him, all i can do is laugh. For me that would be confirmation that our future is bleak.

Pep not wanting to upset his friends is a line of thinking that was literally pulled out of thin air in this thread.
Graham Hunter was on 5 voice last night talking about Peps failed move to United late in his career and how he was fascinated by United with the research he carried out prior to the move falling apart. He stated his wish was to manage United.
Seems to me all the noises ( if you put any credibility to the reports) from sources close to him or with reporters who have had prior dealings with Pep all indicate his interest in United. All the City talk seem to come from England or reporters close to City themselves.
Up to the individual who to believe.

I don't think so. Most United fans think he's City bound. City fans think he's City bound. City even got in Begiristain and Soriano to lay the foundations for Guardiola to come and take the reigns at some point and he may well do so. Everyone has assumed he is City bound. If he then doesn't and opts to go across town I think would be pretty seismic.

I'm not sure about this most fans stuff either. We've all had to sit up and take notice since you alerted us just a couple of weeks ago to City's 10 million new fans in the UK and 75 million in China so at this stage I'd expect City have already surpassed us. Sad but true.

Pretty much bang on.

We all know whats going to happen, we're just preparing ourselves for it now. This will end with a small puff of smoke where no one is surprised, or a bomb going off leaving everyone in a wtf mode. Suffice to say, we know which is which.

Has anyone made the joke that "upgrading contact" probably means Ed repeatedly emailing him from his new iPhone 6s instead of just the shitty old 6 yet? Because if not I think I will make that joke.

You believe this ?

They were employed as they were seen as the best men for the job. Potentially atracting Pep is a bonus.

You're wrong about the blue meltdown. City fans are used to years and years of disappointments. We will take it in our stride.

For many United fans however, this is a relatively new experience and much more difficult to handle.

The long game for City has always been Pep and it's simply disingenuous to suggest otherwise. I know you like to get your excuses in early but give it a rest.

As for the rest of that patronising claptrap you've spouted I'll say little other than a quick visit to a certain City forum paints a very different picture of City fans than the one you're trying to propagate here.

Haha you cannot possibly understand the psyche of City fans.

If Pep signs for United it will just be another disappointment in a lifetime of disappointments supporting City. That's what 'typical city' is all about.

No he isn't. Everything he says will be the opposite of what happens.

Yeah I had a feeling I remembered him being called a spoofer during the summer. That's why I asked.

Feck em anyway, Woody and the Glazers really had better have their eye on the ball here. Because if Pep and Ancelotti end up at City and Chelsea while we're putting the house on Giggs to come good, things could get very ugly, real fast.

We simply have to go for Pep. I'd say even if VG wins the title, the opportunity to get Pep is simply too good to miss.

Knowing us though we'll sit on our arses and end up with someone completely underwhelming.

That's the only fact you've produced in this thread.

Right we should just give up then and take up womens basketball.

So whats the plan for Peps successor should he take over United and leave after 3 seasons? Has anyone thought this out yet? Because he wont stay at United longer than that, or City for that matter.

We were blessed having SAF for so long we didn't need to worry about managers.

We will deal with what happens in 3/4 years when the time comes, I'm more worried about the short term future of the club. At this rate under LVG we will miss out on champions league again there's next to no chance of us winning a trophy.

He's building no sort of legacy here for another manager to build on either were arguably worse under Lvg than moyes, Whenever a new manager comes it's going to be a new rebuild like when moyes left us.

That's the only fact you've produced in this thread.

There are few facts in this thread. It's all conjecture.

However I have posted the following facts

1. Txiki and Pep are very good friends
2. Txiki is credited by Pep of getting him the Barca B team coaches job and of promoting hin to the first team
3. Pep has said that Txiki is the smartest man in football

These are facts which if you don't believe me you can search the internet for.

What facts have you brought to this thread ?

I think they've installed Windows 10 we all know of the problems our antiquated computers caused with DDG's move to Real.
None what so ever.

3. Pep has said that Txiki is the smartest man in football

Pep has also said that Rode is his favourite player, he wants 100 Dantes in his team, Mandzukic is the best striker in the world inside the box and he has no prüblem at all with him, and Badstuber the best player he's ever had.
He also called Marcelo Bielsa the best coach in the world, and Ingolstadt the best team Bayern have faced this season.

Just for context.

Pep was a legendary youth player at Barca, if he wanted that La Masia job then he had it.
It's like LVG getting credit for keeping Giggs in a job at United, it doesn't make sense.

he also said he could see him self managing at utd one day as he liked the atmosphere. A while back tho.

In fairness, he has got his facts straight. Apart from "the smartest" - he's one of the smartest, not THE smartest.

"Their director of sport Txiki Begiristain is [one of] the more special people of my life. He gave me the challenge to train the second team of Barcelona and, after that, the first team and I think he is one of the smartest guys in football around the world."

Has there ever been a period like this when so many of the major clubs in Europe are so all over the place?

I would say that as a top class manager, in terms of history, resources and profile, the 15 most attractive jobs in Europe are Barca, Real, United, Bayern, Juventus, AC Milan, Liverpool, Inter, Atleti, Arsenal, PSG, Chelsea, City, Dortmund and Valencia.

Of those 15, you'd say that at least half of them aren't sure who their manager will be next season.

Enrique, Allegri, Klopp, Simeone, Wenger, Blanc and Tuchel are safe enough but with all the swings and roundabouts, we could well see Real, United, Bayern, Milan, Chelsea, City and Valencia all switching hands at the same time.

Apparently he will take over Chelsea in the summer because his family wants to move to London rather then Manchester..Hiddink till the end of the season.

Gone are the days where us United fans would sit back and watch other clubs get involved in the manager 'merry-go-round', while we knew we had the greatest manager of them lot :(

Pep to Chelsea, Ancelotti to United and Jose to City. I'd probably take that - Let the two boys have all the high profile fights and quiet Carlo will be sitting in the background getting shit done.

At this stage though, I suspect that nobody has a clue what the feck will happen.

I can see Pep having the choice of any of the three English clubs.

Don't get me wrong I have no doubt Pep said this. I'm just saying he's paying him a bit of lip service with that compliment.
It's like Giggs / Terry / Gerrard etc getting jobs within their respective clubs and thanking whoever offered them the position.
They would have that job regardless of who is in charge at the top IMO.
Pep was an idol at Barca, an example put forward for every La Masia product. It would be a travesty if he were overlooked

It would not surprise me if we haven't seriously approached him.
That's exactly the sort of thing which would have happened in 2013, 2014, though maybe after the Moyes debacle, our top brass have learned and have their fingers on the pulse.
The pessimist in me suspects that we are not interested in Pep and would rather let him go to City or Chelsea. Then a year later, we will regret what could've been.

If he had hired Mourinho (instead of Moyes), last year probably would've been our title year and this year would've been the meltdown year (where he would get sacked) and replaced by Giggs as caretaker. Then a new manager in the Summer. It would've been right for maybe Ancelotti to take over. As it stands, with our possession football style, I think Pep would suit us nicely, but I can't see it happening.

Mate, you can't compare LVG with Moyes.
Moyes probably felt proud when he got us to 7th place and must've felt that that was the best MUFC were capable of.
LVG (and any top manager) would be embarrassed if they take MUFC (reigning champs) to 7th place, the following season.
