Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

So we briefed Journos few days back that We were going back for Vidal but knee injury concerns persisted, then briefed that now we were going after Carvalho.

Now it looks like Juve wouldn't sell for something acceptable given knee concerns and Sporting won't sell too far from the sell on clause so we move down to our third/4th choices whoever we sign if we sign anyone.

The communications department at United really needs to fecking sort itself out.

Why didn't we go for Rabiot? Another player Roma will sell for big money in a few years.

I do not know why we did not snap up alonzo, cleverley gone, alonzo would have fit like a glove at united

So ed briefs journos that we are going for vidal. It appears we are trying to do some tricky deal where fee depends on appearances.

Next Day Ed briefs we are in for carvalho. Some think its a ploy to tell juve we aren't just after vidal.

Two days later we brief we are not in for either.

Not only is this incredibly depressing that we can't get a decent midfielder but is also bloody unprofessional. Makes Ed look like a completely blithering idiot who had no idea what he's doing.

We can't possibly sell cleverley and kagawa and not replace them. And blind can feck off, he won't be good enough at all.

Journo on TalkSport (don't know who it was but he seemed to be reporting as if he had good sources) just now reporting some interesting stuff:

- Evans is among those who has been told he can go (the others mentioned I had already heard)

- 3 Bids accepted for Cleverley (Villa, Hull and West Ham) - he is now considering where to go OR whether to go on a Bosman at the end of this season

- Interest in both Vidal and Carvalho has ended and these are no longer being pursued.

It does frustrate the life out of me how we are not going after a CM

But we might be going for a number of other targets. The simple fact is, we won't be telling people who we're after, and van Gaal confirmed it yesterday, he won't talk about who we're after because it'd likely bring the price up.

I'm sure we'll be signing a good CM before the window closes. There is no way we'd sell Cleverley and whoever else without bringing in someone.

I believe we will sign Blind to partner Herrera in central mid and also sign an experienced central defender such as Mexes for example and that will be it...Stootman then in January and Depay the following summer along with a few unknown 16 year olds and LVG's rebuilding will be complete

That is horseshit.

Yeah apart from getting Di Maria, Shaw, Herrera and Rojo it is a terrible window.

If we're counting di Maria as a midfielder then we've bought two of them, which is what everyone wanted.

But we haven't had the sort of defensive midfielder to pair with them since pre-illness Fletcher. So it seems to me we still need a signing as I believe the ultimate goals is a 433.

Carrick has never impressed me in any position in a midfield 3, though he's top in a midfield two that sits deep.

The thing is with fergie's midfield of 2012/13 season, allot of surgery was needed when you look at the options has the next manager took the reigns
summer 2013 midfield
carrick cleverley fletcher anderson valencia nani zaha janazaj young giggs kagwa

scholes had retired, giggs was about to, fletcher was still recovering from his illness, cleverley was ok but we could do better, while our wingers were dire, zaha and janazaj were untested. So allot of rebuilding was needed

So going into the 2013/14 season, we needed atleast 4 midfielders, 2 CM and 2 wide players. Then likes of cleverley fletcher valencia nani and young should have gone, but we were so inept in the transfer market, it had let to our freefall

What we got since fergie retired, was fellaini who was never good enough for united, mata who we did not need. Now herrera and di maria we did need, but we still need another CM, and will need another to replace all the deadwood.

Van Persie's fantastic league form covered it up in his first season, but what we really miss is Paul Scholes.

He was the engine, the heart, the brain of that team for so long. Like with Roy Keane, we'll never really replace him.

Not really, scholes has needed to be replaced since 2010 atleast, or even 2009.

even with herrera on board, we are still short of 2 CM players.
The 2015/16 season is when I would the expect the club to have a much more rounded squad, I would expect anderson cleverley fellaini young nani zaha kagwa welbeck and hernandez will all have been sold, so next season VG's squad will be his, and shaw herrera rojo di maria will have settled with more midfielders brought in. I think fletcher and valencia will be the only survivors of the firesale come next season

I find it odd, given van Gaal's comments regarding having a new look squad by Monday, people are suggesting our business in the transfer market is over.

It is quite clear we are offloading players and working on other deals before the deadline. I expect a surprise or two come Monday.

If you're saying he was no longer at the peak of his powers and it would've been better to have one of the few midfielders better than him at the time, then sure.

You may have noticed when he came out of retirement to save our season and we lost the league only on goal difference.

What I'm saying is we don't have anyone at the heart of the team to run things, control the game and set the tempo.

Feck it, I'm going to speculate that we will go for Lucas Silva, Blind and Rudiger - 2 of those I haven't even heard of!! But seem to fit the bill, with what we need / who is leaving.

It's possible that we're having a hard time selling anyone and that's why it's difficult to bring more players in, it's gonna take us another couple of seasons to get rid of all the dross.

Cleverley to Villa/Hull/West Ham/Valencia
Hernandez to Juve/Valencia
Kagawa to Dortmund
Welbeck on loan to Spurs

These 4 seem likely and we should just release Anderson from his contract, Fellaini looks like he'll survive until January before getting shipped out.

Now we need 2 CM's in within 3 days.

Why the hell would we let Welbeck go on loan to Spurs? He'll be a great addition for them when going for 4th place. Their squad is good enough as it is.

Daniel Taylor tweeting that MUFC have let him know nothing will be happening on Vidal?Carvalho fronts. Interesting.

The journalists have not been briefed all summer. I doubt they have been briefed now. I'm not saying he's wrong, but I doubt all of a sudden we are going to start telling the world about the transfer dealings when we haven't all along.

Surprised more people haven't twigged on to this.

I'd expect 3 or 4 players to leave before the window ends and 2 more to come in.

We signed so much mid-table dross in recent years and placed some of them on bizarrely high wages that I can understand it must be tricky for LVG/Woodward to shift some of them.

Personally, I'd like to see Young, Hernandez, Anderson, Kagawa, Cleverly and Fellaini all moved on to continue their careers elsewhere.

I imagine the sale of those 6 would bring in between 40-50 million which would be handy!

It's a poor window. We have yet to fix the gaping holes in the team in defence and in midfield.

We have brought in two midfielders and two defenders all top class players.

That is 4 players who will all be in the first XI.
Yes we need to a tent hen further but it is better to do it gradually over two season rather than sign 6 or 7 first XI in one window

Indeed. Woodward could be under orders that cant have more signings until sold a couple and reduced wage bill.

It's obvious that these journos were briefed before the press conference.
Could it be to stop the press asking questions about them? van Gaal has already said he doesn't want to talk about possible signings as it pushes the price up. Could this just be a way to stop them asking things? Give them a 'brief' saying theres nothing happening and nothing will be happening, to stop all the questions?

We have lost 3 defenders, all of whom were hugely experienced and influential, two of them who'd be regular starters. The additions of Rojo and Shaw will not make up for that. Our defence looks very weak, especially in the centre.

I'm not so sure Rojo is top class either. He may well be.

We still have to proper defensive midfielder. That is a huge thing especially in LvG's system. Even if we bring in Blind, he just a utility man who can play in different positions. He won't fix that problem.

If we sell ando, kagawa and clev our midfield options will be:

Fellaini (crap, doesn't fit lvg's system)
Fletcher (can he possibly last whole season??)
Herera (looks good but will take time to settle)
Carrick

4 players for 2 positions? Thats thread bare especially considering fletcher's health and fellaini's shiteness.

This will mean we have to stick with 352. Another system with 3 in midfield cant work beause we dont have the midfield cover, and if we put ADM in midfield we dont have the wingers. So this means its most likely ADM will have to be put in a midfield 2, which i dont think is his best position.

We desperately need another cm

Rojo is top class? Nah.

Ideally we needed two top class centre mids and a top class defender at least, which we haven't got so far. We were weak in midfield even before Carrick's injury, so I'm really surprised we haven't bought a proper defensive midfielder.

It's more of the fact the midfield was let to rot for so many years, with average players signed, it's going to take an overhaul to get it right. Not even 2 midfielders is enough

Frankly, it's extremely poor management, at all levels.

Happy with the business in the areas we've covered. Amazing buys in Shaw, Di Maria and Herrera, but again we haven't bought in the most important area.

DM was the most important buy. Our defensive record over the last couple of seasons has been crap. We've been far too easy to play against for a while, teams get too many chances against us, spend too much time near our box and a DM was the most needed transfer.

We'd probably be selling a lot of mid-table dross to bring in a couple more mid-table dross.

Funny thing is, we'd probably actually really benefit from signing a cheapish PL proven DM to screen the defence and allow Herrera and Di Maria to push forward without losing our shape.

Not saying it's the ideal scenario. But we'd be better off with that than with Fellaini, Cleverly, Hernandez, Anderson, Young and Kagawa lurking around and taking big wages.

I'd gladly swap those 6 players for 2 mid-table DMs!
