Manchester United Summer Transfer Window 2015: What do we still need?

My sources tell me that we will sign a big player tomorrow depending on whether we qualify for the CL.

Sweet Jesus feck that is quite possibly the worst piece of sports journalism I have ever, ever read. I mean he makes no coherent point, has taken two Pedro deflections as proof that he has the "big-game know-how" that will lead Chelsea to victory....divine lord, that is genuinely the worst article I have seen in a long time. There's no overarching point, there's no logic to it...it's the kind of attempt at journalism I feel would fail a Junior Cert English exam. Christ.

I'm going to defend the article just to counteract your unusual over-reaction.

You've heard of an opinion piece, right? Well this is what this is.

Everyone knows Pedro is a big game player. The fact he created two goals already only further illustrates this. This was quite obviously brought up to ask the question - why wouldn't Van Gaal want such a player as he is now claiming?

The overarching point or theme is also blindingly obvious. If we are perhaps the richest team in world football then why are we penny pinching and relying on players that are quite simply not up to it at the moment? Personally I find this an interesting question. Do players actually not want to come to United? Are we screwing up negotiations like in the Pedro situatioin? If so, then why? Or if it was simply that Van Gaal didn't want him, this begs an ever big question of why not?

Some pretty pertinent points if you ask me. Many of which are being discussed on these forums currently.

Not going to happen but If we did have the choice of signing Neymar or Bale who would people prefer ?

Both, seeing as there's the same chance of that happening as there is of getting one of them.

I jest, but it does strike me as a complete waste of time if we're pursuing Neymar or Bale, particularly at this time of the window. Plus, as has already mentioned, you could get a player like De Bruyne or Griezmann or Reus for less than half of the costs being quoted for Neymar. At least with Bale we should in theory have a bargaining chip in De Gea - but they're hardly going to want to lose him at this time in the window...

(By the way, I'll happily eat humble pie if Woodward's a miracle worker and can actually land either one of them).

Premier league proven and probably cheaper.

"Premier league proven"... Ever played for a top 4 PL club? No. So there are still question marks, despite being proven as you put it. He's slightly older, not as marketable or as good a player.
Bale and Depay on both wings and whatever Rooney does becomes irrelevant. He's very quick and knows the premier league.

Neymar and Januzaj up front with the former playing a f9 role with Memphis & Mata on the wings has better potential IMO

Spurs finshed 4th with him...

He doesn't have experience of a top side challenging every year for an EPL title, CL, FA cup etc.. He was at a team punching above their weight, top player don't get me wrong, but Suarez and Neymar are on another level and I think Neymar has the potential to go up again.

Neymar is better and three years younger. I still think he can improve.

But both will not happen.

He's good enough to win the champions league, then he has the mental strength to win any league.

So Chelsea getting the signings they needed, albeit late in the window if Stones ends up there, and same with City. Really hope we respond in turn and bring someone in. There isn't much between the teams, but I think if Chelsea sign Stones and City get De Bruyne then there's a gap between Chelsea/City, and then United Arsenal and Liverpool. Which is disappointing as we can easily afford to bring in a top player to bring us up a level and make our attack click. Just seems like a wasted chance if we sign nobody else.

I agree, if they both complete the signings they're going for you'd have to argue they've probably had a better window than us. We keep going for unattainable targets. I understand why as these are the players that will make the difference and allow us to potentially compete. BUT there are players out there that would improve us that we are not going for or missing (Pedro) and this has been our issue so far in the window.

In terms of bringing someone in, who do you think we could pull off?

Griezmann we could definitely do, he's a United fan as well so I think he'd be willing to join. Reus, Muller and Bale aren't happening this summer, though we haven't even tried with Reus. After them, there aren't many at all who would give us what we need really, or at least those who are top quality. Someone like Felipe Anderson is the type we need but he, like Memphis, is more potential then being the star man right now. Would still improve us though. Maybe we could have tried bringing in Lucas Moura? Dybala before he went to Juve? Basically, we dropped a massive bollock with Pedro and unless we get Griezmann basically, then it'll be someone worse then Pedro or nobody at all. Our options are a bit limited at this point.

I think we still need a Bale type and a Griezmann/striker type before the window shuts. Worryingly close to the deadline now.

It's all gone a bit quiet since the Neymar hilarity. Something's brewing...

Is it? I'm losing hope to be honest. We have made some great signings so far and the squad has been greatly strengthened but we desperately need someone to score some goals or create some. Memphis will get better and, unless we sign another scorer, he will probably be our highest scorer this season. As much as I want Rooney to do well, he looks to be really struggling. The defense might be able to cope with Blind and Smalling. It is not ideal but they can probably do the job.

Yep, it was definitely brewing. A few coffees and some beans on toast for lunch has cleared it though.

In all seriousness, I think we're trying to do 'something'. Whether it's too ridiculous to happen I'm not sure but I can't help but think that LVG will know his current squad is too imbalanced.

All our targets are unrealstic, we'll give up on them on deadline day and bring in some shitty last minute panic buy like it's Christmas Eve.

There doesn't appear to be much going on. At this point I'd assume a new goalkeeper (deadline day perhaps?) and that'll be it.

Can't see DDG going, don't think we will bring in anyone... maybe loan a few youngers out, but that can be done after the transfer season ends..

I think Coentrao on loan to Monaco is a bit of a missed opportunity. Would've been nice having an actual left-back challenging/deputising Shaw (and showing him a thing or two about forward play)- despite Shaw's good form of late.

I fully expect nothing will change from now till the end of this window

- De Gea will still be at the club, but rarely play if at all. We will stick it out with Romero
- rooney and Fellaini will be our main strikers, LVG has already said as much so I don't expect to see anyone else
- he will continue with blind at CB so we won't be buying a new CB
- he will continue with memphis/januzaj/young/mata as wingers and they will rotate to 10

So yeah, the way we are now is the way we stay for the season. Hope to god im wrong though.

I can't believe LVG would be so naive / arrogant to assume, if anything else, that our attack has enough about it to challenge the top clubs in Europe.

Also, if Dave stays then he plays all the time or not at all. There would be no reason to play him occasionally.

Have there even been any rumours from credible sources linking us with Griezmann BTW? Not that I think it could happen but he's been talked about a lot on here and I am no sure if there is anything to support our possible interest.

A delightful NO.

he is very arrogant and naive he actually does think we've got a decent enough strike force for whatever reason. Thing with LVG and his tactics he seems quite happy for us to win every match by a scrappy goal Which we've done so far. Long gone are the days we blew teams away. He probably doesn't want any new Attackers after all he didn't want Pedro.

He's a complete fool and we will never win anything whilst he's here.

Gone quiet because we've been linked with ridiculous targets and therefore all teams or press from those countries have rejected the rumours.

To be honest I assume Ed is trying to get something done in the background of a more achievable target, but LVG does like the ''the player has to improve our team and be better than what we have'' so depending on how highly he rates certain players will determine if any signings are possibilities.

I don't think he is content with the quality of attack, it's just that there are no obvious targets and he is unwilling to take a risk with someone who could be considered a punt - like one of the young strikers.

As someone said above, there could be a signing lined up just waiting for Champs League qualification to be confirmed. Who knows.

Really can't see that happening - I think he'll go, or play if he stays.

These aren't his tactics. Look at his Ajax team, or his Bayern with Ribery and Robben tearing new arse holes for fun to see what his tactics might eventually be.

He's sticking true to his usual self which is to build sustainably - hence Depay and resurgence of Adnan.

The only target I've seen us linked with who I thought realistic was Mane at Southampton - I wonder if we'll go for him again before the end of the window.

Very much doubt it. We did not wait to sign the other 4 players and it's just wishful thinking that we are currently waiting to announce a surprise signing.

Keeping De Gea and putting him on the bench would be one of the most idiotic things any football club will have ever done. Possibly the worst. This would be childish beyond imagination.

Do you think anyone will come in before the end of the window?
