Manchester United Summer Transfer Window 2015: What do we still need?

We added some good signings and shipped a ton of deadwood.

We shaved £24m a year of the wage bill.

We lost our most talented outfield player but he didn't do shit last year.

Our best player will likely leave before the window shuts but that was/is largely our of hands. We made a good effort to keep him.

We need world class players in CB, Winger, and Striker. They clearly aren't attainable this window. No point wasting time with more "good" players.

In short, we have been sensible and done well, all in all. We simply continue to pay the price for a lack of ambition in the market between 2009-13, which was nothing to do with LVG and Woody.

Seems a bit of a let off to say they clearly aren't attainable, is your only logic behind that a presumption we would have got them if they were? It's something I've seen on here for quite a few transfer windows.

Said in another thread that if anyone at the start of the summer window had said.
  • LvG won't solve CB issue
  • We'll lose Di Maria without a replacement
  • We'll off RvP and Falcao without a replacement
  • DDG saga would be ongoing with a week left with no replacement
They'd have been met with a strong reaction that LvG isn't that stupid to leave the defence, creativity, attack in such a poor state.

We'll do alright this season and if a lot of players step up we may suprise. We may even get more in. I do find it stretch though to say we can be satisfied with our business.

I think as it stands we're lacking up front, it was obvious against Spurs and Villa and it will catch up with us at some point this season. Rooney simply cannot be counted on to not go on a barren run or get sent off or injured or something. Struggling to break down sides and barely muster a shot on goal has been a weakness of ours for the past few seasons and probably still is despite the arrival of Memphis.

Last year we added some good players to the squad and this year sorted out the central midfield problem (while shifting deadwood in that time) but it looks like we'll have to wait another season before we strengthen up front. Van Gaal's entire time here might just be spent fixing the squad before someone else can have a go at trophies. City and Chelsea are going from strength to strength, it will take some catching them.

I don't know maybe this season we are preparing the basis for next season and next season will be the one in which we'll go for the title with few more signings. We dont need much more signings, 3 players at maximum. This season I think if we get a good winger or a striker we could be close. It's till a good team but a little modest up front.

After "Super Schnunday" out transfer window seems to have gone a bit sour, one way and another. We need to end it on a high.

It's starting to become very Depressing seeing teams around us throwing money around to strengthen and sign top quality players yet we do nothing, I thought we could match any team when it comes to transfers? I thought we had a warchest of money?

Pedro and otemendi would've been perfect for us. Both were available.

We better have sonething up our sleeve because when we get our inevitable injuries then our squad looks worringly weak.

We need Neymar!

In all seriousness i think we have done well in this window, we need another striker but it looks like LVG is putting a bit of faith in Rooney and Hernandez, if things go horribly theres always January!

It wouldn't surprise me is the Glazers are waiting to qualify for the CL before loosening the purse strings.

We've only had a £6m net spend so far. That'll change once the CL money is guaranteed.

Might also be a factor for potential signings, guess we'll have to wait.

this game illustrating where we are short again....Krul barely tested since the first 15 mins

Mata's and Chica's shots were the only two that really tested Krul in the whole 90 mins. We need firepower upfront badly, Rooney isn't going to cut it. I don't care how early in the season it is

I really rate Mata, obviously. But imo we need a winger on the right. It's easy to defend when 80% of the danger is coming through the left.

We better...as of right now we need 3 more players to give this season any chance of amounting to anything (CB, winger, striker)

Just want this bastard window to close now. I don't think we'll get anyone and hearing all these stupid rumours (Neymar is just the cherry on top) just irritates me. The media need a slap.

We should have hung on to Nani for a little longer. Give him an opportunity, see how he reacts. While there was nothing wrong in aiming for better, we left ourselves short in that department of quick, spontaneous attackers. He should have stayed until we got someone in who is better. Stop-gap essentially, but a good to very good option.

If we've let Di Maria go, and passed up Pedro, without having something at least as good lined up - that's just incompetent

Our defence isn't that bad, we can do without a centreback for a year imo. There's no reason to buy one who will want gametime but isn't an upgrade on what we already have, numbers wise we're fine and there's not many top centrebacks available who would improve us instantly. We also are playing catch-up with transfers and already made alot of changes lately, some sort of continuety can be just as usefull for a defensive partnership in stead of bedding in another player.

Our attack needs new blood though. The question is, which position? We could do with a player at ST/RW or 10 but I think RW makes the most sense for now. Currently we're playing Mata there (no complaints mind) but haven't got backup for him, nor a pacier alternative. We've only got Januzaj who van Gaal seems to prefer centrally this year. I think if we can get a marquee signing who can cover for multiple positions (10 and/or ST) on top of RW that would be ideal. I don't think our net spend will be 8m this year, van Gaal will want to strengthen the attack as nothing has changed since he expressed that desire. I'm pretty confident we'll make another signing in this department, I do wonder who though.

We'll also need a goalie if Dave goes, but that goes without saying. Hope he stays for another year so we can be better prepared for his departure and don't have to pay extra over the top for his replacement.

Realistically we need both RW and a striker, but there is no way in hell we will add both. So at this point I'd take a striker and persevere with Mata / Januzaj although I think it's bad management we let it get to this.

I was of that opinion but watching Nani stink up the Turkish league has proved he was right to go.

Excluding the GK situation I think we need 1 solid attacking signing. Someone who will galvanise the rest of them, we have the personnel but it's not clicking at this moment in time.

A striker and a right winger would really improve our team at the moment. I know that there are a few players being touted around but I will not build my hopes up one way or another.

Anyone think Mirallas could do a job for us? Languishing on the Everton bench and I think he's very good.
It's not a bad shout tbh, and at this stage what I want to see most is another attacking option, doesn't have to be a world beater, just a bit of depth.

We do not need depth.

We got Lingard and Pereira, if we need depth. We need a player who can score goals. That's why I am warming to the Zlatan idea.

Call me stupid but I wouldn't mind Lukaku here after all this disappointment. He can't be any worse than Rooney currently is now surely? At the very least he would challenge Rooney to reach some kind of form again. Hit the bar and had a disallowed goal vs City today and has been in good form as of late.

Ibrahimovic would be amazing, but I'm not going to hold my breath on that. I'm looking for realistic targets where a deal can be done at short notice.

Given Mirallas's problems last year with Martinez, he's someone we can possibly get at short notice, who is fast, already playing in England and has scored PL goals.

I'm uncomfortable enough already with Wilson seemingly being our third option (behind Hernandez too, which says a lot) upfront given how unproven he is, the idea of Lingard and Pereira as back ups does not appeal.

Everton spent almost £30m on him, at this stage in the window it'd probably cost us North of £40m to get them to come to the table. We could put that money towards far better targets.

Such as? I agree it might be a stupid price to pay but I don't see much realistic options out there. It seems we have been chasing these far better targets to no avail, so far. I really do hope theres a spanner in the works that we've all overlooked

I don't neccesarily mean this summer, I'd rather put that sort of cash towards someone in the future say when a Bale or Kane become gettable. Just Lukaku hasn't convinced me.. yet.

Looking at City and even Chelsea I don't see anything better than 3rd for us this season bar 2 or 3 amazing signings in the next week

I'm not concerned with City and Chelsea as I think the gap in quality is too much right now despite the latters stumbling start. I'm more concerned about getting enough goals to force one of Arsenal or Liverpool out of the top 4.

Rooney, Januzaj, Memphis and Mata are our current starting front 4 with Hernandez and Young as our only 2 off the bench attacking options with Marouane "Hail Mary" Fellaini due back next week. There's is a real lack of defense breaking pace and goals in that mix and we have to be realistic with expectations for Memphis and Januzaj given their age and in Memphis case the fact this is his first season in a top league.

The fact Rooney doesn't just look out of form but physically blunted is the biggest worry, so we have to get someone for either the RW or one of the two central roles to bolster our goal threat before the window closes, or we are playing Russian Roulette with the top 4 spot IMO.

If we leave the squad as it is then I would have to think there has to be an issue financially somewhere, can't think what but to have all the talk of limitless funds at the start of the window, and if we then end it with £0 spent (net), and a £20 million + saving on the wage bill it would be very hard to understand, when we clearly have a threadbare squad.

I just hope there isn't some sort of money issue going on that we don't know about, as the players are/have been there.

Money issue?

We spent £300m or close to that since Fergie left.

I honestly think Van Gaal believes if he can't get a world class player like Muller or Bale that he will stick with the current lot. Just like in defence when it was Ramos or nobody. Basically he'd only sign players who are better than what he's got.
