 I'm assuming the revisioning will only get worse if he has a couple decent games for City

Granted he wasn't great for a while but he was very good before he lost his confidence. A good coach could have helped him get his confidence back. Very little LVG did at all (apart from a few good results in big games) made me think he was a good coach or man manager. He got nowhere near the best out of his players despite spending a fortune on players he didn't even know how to use properly. He was the wrong manager for us.

Best moment ever for Evans. By far. Pole axes Drogba, who squirms like a fish, camera pans to Vidic who is proud of his understudy and is looking at the ref, who then show Drogba a yellow for who knows what. Hilarious.

was just going to mention this :)

weird that LVG was so obsessed on having a left footed ball playing CB and evans was arguably our best left footed defender (he is actually one of the most two footed player i've seen), instead playing tyler blackett.

at 29 this is probably his last chance of getting back to a top club. not sure whether he will get loads of games at city and he is the captain of his current club as well. it is either going back to a club challenging for trophies not playing much or playing regularly at a mid table side.

Young player being inconsistent shocker.

It's no surprise that he's turned things around at West Brom with a run of games, and increased age (29 is prime age for a defender). Only question is whether he can play for a top club and maintain high levels of concentration. I think he has what it takes. City seem to have interest. Would be good for his career if he went. I selfishly hope he turns them down.

He left when he was 27, hardly young.

We talked and talked about his potential for 10 years, and he's never kicked on from 08-09 when he was part of the set up that got the defensive record. The truth is, for whatever reason, he would never have improved playing for us.

Evans has always had ability, just did not have the heart. Seems to have done well at West Brom, really should stay there as long as he can. He will only end up on the bench at City.

He was much better than Jones and Smalling. Not sure why LVG got rid of him when he was clearly much better in almost every aspect. Better passer, better leader and better tackler and interceptor.

Having said that, I really hope he doesn't join City. He's United through and through. He was good in 11/12 and 12/13.

He is/was nothing like in the same league as even Smalling not too mention Jones. He's found his level at West Brom and has done well but at Utd unless he was next to a quality defender he was a liability. Just think back to the 1-6 city defeat. Awful defender and I hope he goes to city.

At his best, he was on par with both of them imo.

You have a short memory. Jonny was excellent alongside Rio in 12/13. Much better than anything Smalling and Jones ever did.

Ferguson even said that he was the one player LVG shouldn't have sold.

I think he would be a good signing for them. He has a style of a "Pep defender" and they need a quality CB with good PL experience instead of keep trying with the Stones and the Mangalas. Would be a kick in the teeth for people at their academy though. Decided to buy a former United academy graduate out of anyone.

Because he was playing really bad and made so many mistakes that season? And he's definitely not stronger or quicker than Smalling and Jones

The revisionism is strong in this thread, Evans was good player, but really inconsistent, one day you see him handle Drogba, and the next week you'd see him getting owned by Carlton Cole

Saf was also the man that wanted Moyes as his replacement. He made more poor decisions than good ones in his latter years. Evans was not a good defender, positionally awful, stood off way too much and was injury prone.

He always looked good when we were not under pressure but as soon as the defence was put under he was a complete liability.

Agreed. Pep needs an experienced, league proven player and Evans would seem to fit the job nicely.

He got rid of Evans because we were in the top couple of teams defensively under LVG's tenure. Smalling and Blind were absolutely fantastic back then so we lost nothing due to him leaving. The revisionist history from people like you is over the top sometimes

Evans was always potentially a great player, but as others have mentioned mentally not that strong. But I prefer his style and capabilities to someone like Smalling, but that doesn't mean he is a better defender. It is mostly about the set-up and philosophy

Is this the best that City, with all their billions and the "best manager in the world" can do, try to poach a baggies defender, really? Shit must be really depressing over there.

Its another Welbeck moment, the world will end when City sign him, it will be clear indication of how far out of touch LVG was, until he actually plays and the harsh reality sinks in that actually, he is a more than just a little bit wank.

He is shit, in an expansive team like City he will be shown up week in week out, playing him in a three with two other mentally weak defenders?

It will be glorious.

All the reliable sources that he'll replace Kolarov as the fourth choice CB, so I'm not sure if he'll play much.

I think he would be a really good signing for City. They struggle to fill their "home grown" quota and he's a better option at the back than Delph is in midfield. But I would be amazed if he was more than a squad player.

Fergie loved him and saw him as a future captain. I just never saw it with Evans. He looked good next to Vidic but just didn't have it in him to make the step up as the senior defender.

United handled the transition from Vidic/Rio really badly and the main reason for me was how often Evans played at centre back ahead of Smalling and Jones. If one of those had played as many games alongside Vidic I think they would have developed more and the transition would have been much easier.

Stinks of a move trying to maintain our open foreign spots left in the squad (which goes from 1 to 2 remaining if we replace Mangala with Evans). Makes me wonder why we seem so keen on generating that extra space. If we bring in Evans, DM and a forward then overall it makes sense. If we stop after Evans then I don't really see it.

He definitely was, though I think Jones can be better than him if he stays injury free. Better defender than Smalling imo.

This place really does overrate every player City sign. I remember how scared everyone was when they signed bloody no legs Hargreaves.
So true. It's a fickle sport, he'd barely play so it'd make no odds anyway. Imagine if he did and he had a good first game like Matic. :D

Pep buying another crap CB? Personally I'd be delighted if he went there and played because he will cost them points. Chances are he'll be bench fodder though surely.

Hope so, he's average and makes a big mistake every game. Will fit in well with the other City CB's in that respect.

He was much better on the ball but not as good at defending. The main problem with Evans at United was handling the pressure and needing a leader next to him. Smalling and Jones are better in that regard, and I'm not convinced even they are part of our future first choice backline.

I wasn't surprised when he did well at West Brom though because he always had ability once the limelight was off. If he's matured from his experience there he might be good bet for City but I doubt it. The way Pep's tactics exposes City's defense is not good for a confidence player like Evans. He'd probably spend most of the time on the bench anyway, and as I remember he did better once he got into a rhythm of playing.

You dont really believe his do you, he is not even close to either of them.
Evans is not good enough for a top 4 club, he will struggle to even get a game at City, not sure why they would even want him

Would be a very good buy and I wouldn't begrudge him for moving there either. He's not going to get another chance at the highest level.

Also he's good on the ball so he's a good fit too.

Then again he became a poor defender by the time we sole so there's that.

Lukaku would take the piss out of him of this happen.

Would be a bad signing for City IMO. Evans-Pritchard ain't that good and he always need to have a good CB next to him. Additionally, he is a mentally weak player and his confidence won't be high playing every third match or so. Make it happen!

On one hand it'd be a shame to see Evans at City because I like him.

On the other hand, he was so bad here in his last season that, assuming he'd buckle under the pressure of playing it out from the back for a top club again, I probably wouldn't mind seeing him at City with their already leaky defence. I actually considered him our best CB and was obviously the best CB we had on the ball around that time, too, but he just completely lost it despite probably being our only defender you'd have thought would suit van Gaal's style.

Remove sentiment out of this and can anyone honestly say they would mind? If Evans completely lost his confidence under LVG's regimented instructions then Pep will lead him to crying on the pitch. Put Stones next to him and it's a disaster waiting to happen.

I would love for this to happen. I've no doubt he'd fail and the "ragspiracy" meltdowns will be hysterical

I thought Evans was at least 32. He's only 29?!

He'd be a decent player for them. He won't be the greatest centre back in the world but he won't make mistakes every single game or be constantly found out the way that some seem to be suggesting.

Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic among the Azande?

I agree. He's a good defender. That's it. WBA is his level and I'm not sure he's better than what they have now. I'm all for this transfer.
