Don't really get all those saying better than van dyke, better than stones, excellent buy for city etc etc........surely if he's that good shouldn't we be off loading one of our lesser centre backs and re-signing Evans ?

Agree he's not better than van Dijk but I'd take him personally. Much prefer him in a back three to Smalling.

Jonny Evans isn't very good. One of van Gaal's better decisions.

Injury prone and makes terrible decisions in important games.

Evans has come on leaps and bounds from having that consistency of playing every week since we sold him. He'd go straight into the first team at City in place of Stones or Otamendi.

He was better than he looked under LVG, he's a good defender and would work for them. I hope he doesn't go there.

People are overrating him after a few decent seasons at a very defensive and average team. He was bullied by the likes of Carlton Cole while at United.

He was bullied by every physical forward while at United, he always got to too tight and was eaily rolled or played round.

That and he absolutely shit himself in possession under pressure and was liable to make the most brain dead of mistakes.

I would love it if he went to City and they decided to troll us by playing him, all we would have to do is stick Lukaku or the bog brush right up against him and the results would be carnage.

Didn't do too shabby against IbrAdriano at the age of 20 when we played Inter Milano away from home in KO's (2008/2009). Just needed to be high or at least not low on confidence and being a confidence player doesn't add up in a potentially top CB.

He used to have games that would me make swear he was going to be a legend for us. He would then proceed to look like schoolboy against some strikers that were not that great.

He's done well at WBA to be fair, but if he signs for them I will most definitely Lol.

He is better than anything they had over the years, except Kompany when he was actually useful few years ago. I have no idea why would anyone like City upgrading their CBs, have people actually seen clowns like Mangala, Stones, and others over these past few years?

These Islands used to produce high quality Centre Backs consistently.

When a player as bang average as Jonny Evans is linked with the Manchester City of today, it shows how far that pool of quality has been eroded.

Good player, would be a solid backup. No hard feelings either obviously.

Would be gutted if Jonny goes to City tbh.
Homegrown United player, won trophies with us. No hard feelings if he does sign. In the end of the day it's a job and he has a family to think of.

Young player being inconsistent shocker.

It's no surprise that he's turned things around at West Brom with a run of games, and increased age (29 is prime age for a defender). Only question is whether he can play for a top club and maintain high levels of concentration. I think he has what it takes. City seem to have interest. Would be good for his career if he went. I selfishly hope he turns them down.

It was always madness to sell him, probably LVG's worst decision.
Come on... that's just silly talk. He was pretty awful under LVG and I'm not suprised he was sold. LVG's whole Utd reign was full of bad decisions and this one was faaar from his worst.

We need to look at the benchmarks set this summer. 25M is a pisstake.
Well he's a solid 29yo CB with only 2 years left on his contract. As expensive as other players have been if you compare, I think, the most expensive CB sold this summer was Bonucci (7 months older than Evans) at about £35m. Bonucci is a top 3 CB in the world, so Evans at £25m would be very decent business.

What's the deal with Smalling? The majority of the times I've seen him play over the past few years he's been your best defender and I'm normally impressed by him, although Bailly looked solid last season. Do I just watch the few games he plays well?

It's not just you, he has an incredibly high ceiling, but these days the Caf is interested in the highlights of players who aren't at United yet, and only the 'lowlights' of the ones who are.

It's not just single games or purple patches either. He was stone-cold world class for almost the entirety of 2015-16. At the time you'd have struggled to find many who'd disagree, and now you'd struggle to find many who'd even admit it. This place got weird.

Bailly's special too, and has the advantage on here of not having been through a bad spell yet so everyone's not had a chance to go off him and start drooling over some potential signing instead.

Evans used to go completely to pieces in games for us. He'd be decent for a few months, then have one bad performance, then you basically couldn't play him in the next few games unless you wanted to concede about 4 goals each time.

That 4-0 MK Dons game was about 90% his fault.

I've not watched any of it again but surely you can put some of it down to us playing a ragtag team with a bunch of squad players?

My recollection was it being the very, very large final nail in his LVG-era career. He'd been terrible for a while, and injured, then put in that showing and it was a bit like some of Rooney's under Jose - clearly it was time to go.

He's okay. Would have been a useful back up especially given our annual CB injury crisis, but isn't good enough to be starting at a club like City.

More importantly, his distribution is woeful, couldn't be less of a Guardiola CB.

I specifically remember him being by a wide margin the worst of the whole lot (and that is saying something). It wasn't even the first time either. We went out of the League Cup 4-0 to West Ham a few years earlier due to a similar Evans meltdown.

LVG kept playing him after the MK Dons game, then a few weeks later we conceded 5 to Leicester, and Evans disappeared until December.

Edit: Just did a quick search back to that season and this best sums up what I thought of him by that point:

Evans - I think he's gotten into a vicious circle of constantly being nervous due to being nervous at how bad at defending being nervous makes him.

Best moment ever for Evans. By far. Pole axes Drogba, who squirms like a fish, camera pans to Vidic who is proud of his understudy and is looking at the ref, who then show Drogba a yellow for who knows what. Hilarious.

Evans will be a good player for any top club if given a run and a constant partner to play with. He was always potentially top class.

 I'm assuming the revisioning will only get worse if he has a couple decent games for City
