He was so bad for us, selling was the only option. I dont know if Evans was our worst defender under van Gaal or Blackett, thats how bad he was. He had a period before getting sold where he invited so much pressure on us by gifting one or two golden chances to the opposition teams every game

You have a short memory.

He was fine before LVG, but totally lost it under him. By far our worst CB from the first team in that period. Going to Pep wont help him with his weird tactics, he will get found out again, just like under LVG. He is a simple and good defender, but not one for possession teams with weird instructions and tactics

I tend to agree that Evans regressed pretty massively under van Gaal, but he was at least pretty good before that and seems to have returned to a similar level since.

Blackett is, was and always will be terrible.

Just opened this thread to predictably see on the first page , pretty much for the first time since he left, that we never should have sold him and it was down to Van Gaal who ruined him and 'sucked his confidence'. Not sure how he managed to do that. Evans was absolutely terrible under Van Gaal, and was lucky to have survived a few summers before he even came anyway. Blind and Smalling managed to excel under LVG, so can something not be blamed on Van Gaal for once?

What's the deal with Smalling? The majority of the times I've seen him play over the past few years he's been your best defender and I'm normally impressed by him, although Bailly looked solid last season. Do I just watch the few games he plays well?

You have made no mistake at all. The caf seem to think he isn't good at defending, when he's probably the best at defending. He's crap on the ball though, and despite being less error prone over his time at the club than the rest, he's apparently an accident waiting to happen at all times too.

He had a poor spell last season, which was all the more notable as it was a 'loss of form' as opposed to his normal level. He also then recovered from that and returned to very good form, which is often overlooked.

I'm glad we moved on. Not a bad defender, had a decent season or so, excellent servant. But he would've only been adding to the average, to be honest. He's one of those that we would've benefited from while we've been so all over the place, but at the same time were right to move on from. Like Nani I guess. Basically we feck up replacing and improving.

Wouldn't blame him for moving to City if he so desires. I'd do it for the sake of my career.

I never seen anyone mentioning Evans as good defender after he left us, nor i saw insulting comments towards LvG for selling him. Now,suddenly City had their bid rejected and out of nowhere people rating Evans highly as defender, insulting LvG for selling him. Also media trying to paint him as some kinda world class defender even they rarely praised him since leaving United, this place is really something else.

A lot of people did complain about the way LVG managed the squad. Welbeck sold I guess got more attention as he did it his first season. Second season we sold Di Maria, Hernandez, Van persie left and so on. Thus Evans did kind of fall a bit under the radar. Our defense has been good for a long time now so I guess many people may not have complained much. Even without Evans we had a fairly strong defense although injury prone. LVG putting his faith mainly in Rooney as our main striker was what most people complained about and our lack of getting in attacking quality.

They've spent hundreds of millions on their defence and they could potentially line up with Evans Stones Walker....shocking honestly, bang average at best.

Evans never fall under the radar, game vs MK Dons turned this place into flames, comments about Evans were savage, that night if this place could, they would launch Evans into space.

Is it a bit naughty to suggest if this is City's final signing of the season then it could be the one that ensures we win the league?

LvG gets credit for Smalling looking like Maldini at times though so there is that.

That bloody clearance :mad::mad:

I'm surprised City aren't going for Laporte. Similar level player who's considerably younger. Perhaps they feel the €65m release clause is too high (surprising given what they've spent in the back), or it's Evans homegrown status that really attracts them, or maybe they are still salty about being rejected last summer.

Kompany & Evans age and experiences will be more valuable and suitable for Stones.

I don't rate him very highly but he'd definitely be an improvement on Stones atm so I hope they don't get him.

have I woken up in a parallel universe where City want Evans and are willing to pay about £30m for him?

Just went back to his old performances thread and picked a page at random.

Here is some of the posts on that page, I could have picked three times as many.

If he never played for United again, I wouldn't give a toss. Been shit for two and a bit seasons now.

Not good enough. If we had brought in a few defenders this season, I'd want him booted out as part of the deadwood.

Two brainfarts from him today.

Our worst defender, he is just average. He wouldnt be misplaced at Hull.

Terrible today. I'm usually a fan of his, but he was absolutely awful today, and has been all season.

Can we sell him? He finds it incredibly difficult to pass to his own teammates. At least if we were a man down there'd be no one to give the ball away outside our own box.

Can't help but laugh at those who say he's our best defender. Can't make simple passes, takes an hour to decide who he wants to pass to, average defending and so fecking slow.

The Cleverley of CB

Doesn't look good enough to be a backup CB for us.

Another poor performance. Probably our worst CB atm.

Genuinely diabolical defending from him. It's not even a question of ability anymore, he needs to get out of his slump and needs to stop making suicidal mistakes at the back. Growing a pair to lead the back four would be lovely, but at times it almost like he has bet against the team and is throwing the match.

Rojo should be replacing him instead of Blackett

What has happened to him? He was so assured and confident in possession before this season and he's suddenly turned into a nervous wreck.

I didn't pick these posts to shame people, more to highlight just how poor he was for us back then and it really wasn't a mistake to sell him like some are rewriting history to suggest it was.

To be fair though Evans was the whipping boy on these forums at the time and any mistake was amplified to 11 by the mob.

I don't think you watched him under Van Gaal. He was very nervous and made mistakes. He isn't a bad player though but he was very poor when we sold him.

Yeah I was one of his biggest fans but he was dogshite under LVG. Which was surprising because he had all the characteristics of a LVG centre-back. Was disappointed when we sold him but it was justifiable at the time.

You can go into about half our players threads at certain points and it'll look like that. Only surprising thing there is that there aren't more personal insults like calling him a coward prick or something.

I am surprised that there is barely any discussion about this transfer, I just don't know why Evans would want to go to City, having been a United youth player and spending 9 years as a senior player there.
Other than the fact that he counts for a homegrown player and is not bad, why else would City go for him? Especially since he hasn't been amazing at West Brom. Is a sign of his quality that Leicester are also in for him?
I just cant see it happening...

Crikey, he isn't a united player anymore. You don't need to defend him.

Good luck to him, wherever he goes/stays.

We've clearly moved forward for the better.

He's 29, probably thinking his chances of playing in the CL and competing for the league are over, has resigned himself to sleepless nights with Tony Pulis' "hoof it Jonny" reverberating in his head. He wakes up every matchday wondering how he ended up at the one club that Ben Foster is at, and after escaping Northern Ireland - ending up at the most Northern Irish club in the league.

When suddenly City appear, offer him the chance for another big contract, CL football and potentially more trophies while living in a familiar City. All for the sacrifice of having "Don't hoof it jonny" with a Spanish accent ringing in his head at night.

I think any good will United fans have with Evans will quickly diminish if he signs for those bastards.

Yeah I wouldnt begrudge him a move to City

Chance to compete for the league and play CL football. No sensible footballer would turn that chance down.

Be a better fit at Leicester, him and a Maguire partnership could be great. Even Smalling at Leicester would be a really good buy I reckon.

I'll wish him the worst at City, but I do that with all of their players(On-field )

But wouldn't hate him because he chose to join City. It was the best move for both of us to part at the time.

I wouldn't hate him either, but many will.

An ex United player that came through the youth ranks and signs for either City or Liverpool is quite a sickening thought though.

I hope he rejects them (he won't though, as he'd be stupid to turn down the financial package they'll offer).

You can begrudge him the move. We chatted to sell him.
However,I wish he and City are miserable.

This is one sided because you are only showing select negative comments. There were positive remarks too you know

Unfair. Him and his brother are united fans, have been since they were nippers.
If he goes there he will still be red.. agent Evans

Exactly.

We got rid of him, he didn't ask to leave. He's getting what's probably one last chance at challenging for the league and champions league football, most likely a healthly payrise too, and we expect him to stay at West Brom?

I wish Evans the best of luck if he does go, and I hope when we play them he has a nightmare of a performance!
