He's really not what we need, another English player making a big step up. We need an experienced leader to partner Bailly and break in Lindelof. Godin or Bonnuci mold, somebody that has one trophies and has guidance. People that are good on the ball and can lead us in the biggest stage. Something Smalling and Jones are unable to do. It's annoying that people keep mentioning him because of a good world cup, that's the key word 'good'. We have enough good players, we need a top one that can bring us to the next level. Maguire is not what we need now.

Sorry, it seems we may be at cross-purposes.
It seemed to me that you were annoyed that people were discussed how to compensate for Maguire's weaknesses whilst discarding Lindelof when they could be looking how to compensate for his too.
My point was that Lindelof looked good in the Swedish team because of the football they play, that's how we have seen his weaknesses compensated for.
I don't think that any United fans would want to adopt the system Sweden play. Many fans would be happy for us to go to a 3-5-2 (the system that compliments Maguire) or close derivatives of it, however.
People criminally over-rate Smalling on here. To be honest, part of the reason I don't like him is that he's from Maidstone and the last time I went there I got mugged 
Maguire is exactly what we need, which is why he's not coming here. Not a Mourinho type of defender.

Sure, to make myself clear then, I'm annoyed at people's willingness to excuse Maguire's lackings (not talking about 352s or Sweden's systems here, it's physical/tactical/technical abilities or lack of thereofs that I'm talking about) and talk about complementing those lackings by our other defenders while disregarding Lindelöf as a shit defender and not even bothering to pretend to use the same gauge for him as for Maguire.
I disagree, I think he's exactly what we need...
A player coming into their prime years who's worked their way up and shown that they deserve to be at a big club by being quality everywhere they've been, including a World Cup.
Maguire is a leader and I think would also be a great fit in our dressing room.
Let him go to a rival and we'd regret it.

He was talked about on here since his Hull days. If you remember back to when we played them 3 times in a row, the semi final of the league cup and in the league, they really pushed us close and were outplaying us a lot of the time. Robertson and Maguire were their stand out players in that game. If you look back in that thread too a lot of his most impressive games come against the big sides.
Admittedly I wasn't calling for us to sign him when he moved from Hull to Leicester so I can't claim for that.

Read a few comparisons of Maguire to Bruce. Do people not understand that with how the game has moved on that Bruce would no longer be considered good enough for Utd if he was playing now? He was slow even at his peak and made for dealing with old fashioned long ball football in the main. Quick, clever forwards with great movement and one v one ability exposed his lack of mobility and that is the type of player Utd defenders will come up against to win major tournaments or the key domestic clashes. Is Maguire good enough defensively against that level of opponent.

When he's fit, Bailly is easily one of the best defenders in this league if not the best. He's way better than
You really rate him, it's funny that people have really wanted him since this tournament. I'm not saying you did, he had a decent season for Leicester but he's really not what we need.
Harry Maguire is not a leader yet, he wouldn't be coming in and captaining that backline. He played in a Leicester side that conceded 60 goals. We need an experienced older player to guide that line. We can't go in to another season as Smalling as our first choice senior CB. We need somebody that has played at the highest level and can take us to the next one. We don't want another up and coming player, we have enough coming through. It's the profile of CB that people are getting confused about. We need a World Class CB to captain that back line. Fecking Harry Maguire is not going to give us the edge in a CL knockout game.
Nervous that we've already brought in Lindelöf and Bailly, who have been mixed to say the least, and now we're after another centre back. We laughed at City for repeatedly smashing tonnes of Wonga on centre back after centre back, we're looking the same now.

The tiny thing these people forget is that Smalling starts when fit.
That's despite Mourinho bringing in 2 centre backs.
Smalling is excellent in the air, good one to one, and quick.

I hardly saw Bailly in Spain so if you're basing it off that fair enough. If you're basing it off time in the prem then you're overrating him. He's been far from the best CB in the prem.

In fact, out defense last season (when Bailly played just 12 matches and Smalling was our main defender) conceded one goal less than the season before it (when Bailly played 26 matches and was our main defender).
Bailly has shown promise and might become a very good player but calling him the best in the league (or even one of the best in the league) is nothing short of laughable.
He's had a great season in Europe that year, don't think it was just Euro.

Thing is we don't know whose decision to pursue John Stones. It could have been Chelsea board and not Mourinho. It's clear there was a price they could afford and over that they will walk away.
The rumored price for Maguire is of top CB. Just because he is performing better than John Stones doesn't mean we need to spend that much for him based on overpriced John Stones.
