There's no point in crying about past transfer fees. Leicester took a gamble on a talented young defender, just like hundreds of other clubs have done over the years. In the case of Maguire, he's lived up to the potential and the gamble paid off.

You can't expect United to buy every single £12m player in the hope that their value will increase. The LCFC step was a necessary one for the player to develop into a top footballer. If we got him for any fee, I'd be over the moon.

Our defence is excellent but a little lacking in the air. Maguire fixes that without compromising on the ability to pass out of the back. He'd instantly be our most rounded defender. Everyone else is either a specialist or unreliable in some way.

Good post. It’s about time some people realised that you can’t but every promising CB or any position for thst matter, in the hope they become WC You would end up with 20 CB’s.

No one team has a perfect record in that sense as it’s impossible to achieve. Hindsight is not a skill.

Just insofar as he offers something very different to Bailly, whereas the rest of our defenders (Smalling aside) are quite similar.

What does this have to do with anything. So how come we suddenly want him now, because he's at Leicester? We could have gotten him for cheap when we still didn't have Bailly or Lindelof. Right now he's at the most expensive he'll ever be in his life, after a world cup, we want him. It's really disturbing how poorly run we are on this front

the FA doesn't have an FFP, the Premier League have one and the Football League have one, we had to pay between £3-4m to the Football League last summer

Only time will tell I guess! I just think Jose would want the finished product in Toby a lot more.
 
Mourinho is one of the best managers in history at constructing defences and identifying top CBs.

I can just about understand people doubting his ability to build an attacking unit, but I'd trust the manager on this one.

Whatever he costs, the right man is more important than getting value. We're trying to be the best and Jose knows how to do that from the back. He evidently believes that Maguire is the solution. That's good enough for me.

We need a decent header of the who's also good at passing. Smalling is good at the former, but not so good at the latter. Alderweireld is decent at the latter, but is lacking at the former.

Maguire is good at both. He's the best option to complete our defensive unit.

Except for the last 2 CBs that he bought? 3rd time lucky?
I would seriously hope that he was on his list long before the world cup and not just after watching his great performances against the mighty Tunisia and Panama?

If I remember right, Maguire was brought into the Hull team half way through the season when Marco Silva came in and Hull were decent under him.

Bailly is good and can become great. So you're down to "except his last CB".
 
Sign him even if it's for 60 million. We could recoup some of the money from a yearly event (We'll use his name for a shit pun) that's going to attract a lot of attentions, other clubs fans are welcomed to spectate (need to buy a ticket though). It's called: The Guire Book of World Record <<Year>> where certain ManUnited fans will compete for the top spot for these categories :
a. The most positive fan (ala Ty)
b. The most negative fan (ala Claude, the doomsayers - the club's going to be relegated, etc)
c. The "fecking hell, Woody" fan (ala DT, this is where I think Caf members should join in as this one is about who moans the most about clubs decision in selling or buying players)
d. The "I'm sick of this" fan (ala some people on match day threads, this is about who talks shit about a player the most. The person competing for this must be able to remember the past mistakes a player did during a match and use it as a stick to beat him up regardless if He won the golden boot at the end of the season, it's all about the match days)

Maguire will be the one who hand out the prizes, which are no more than cheap certificates along with KenWood juicers. The club will generate a lot of profit from this yearly event.

If you play for a smaller club, people will always find excuses for why he's actually quite shit (when Van Gaal went for Mane for example.) If he plays for a smaller club and he's English, then fecking hell! Must be really bad!

I think you're too focused on criticizing the way things are done. My point is, United and other big clubs often wait for a player to show the same level of performances at another , better club before deciding to sign. Sometime a great WC or Euro tournament hastens that. But what you're picking at isn't fair.

Another case in point is Bayern. There are many good players that make the stop at say, Dortmund before Bayern jump in for a much larger fee.

Yeah its just more common for us in the domestic market, particularly if the players already in his mid twenties, to sign from a bigger club where the player has been able to handle stepping up.

Yep you’re spot on. It’s based on people’s own almost aesthetic criteria rather than anything football related.

Jones is a very good defender, what keeps him back is his injuries (duh-uh. Both in terms of development and consistency, you get so much from playing all the time - and likewise you lose so much energy by being injured. I’d say Maguire will never be as good as Jones, but like with many others, injuries ruin everything, including reputations.

Harsh. At the same time you can find valuable information and differences due to playing styles. It’s much easier to look awesome for a lesser team that likes to sit deep, Lindelof would look immense for Leicester probably. Same for a goalkeeper, just standing there and making saves, nobody cares if you let one in. For United, with a higher block and greater pressure, let’s see if heavy Maguire can cope.... I highly doubt it.
 
Surely we’re at the point now, where we’ve just got to pay up, and gamble on the centre-back positions.

We’ve flogged this Jones/Smalling/Bailly/Rojo thing to death.

Apart from the odd little period, none of them have remotely got anywhere near the levels of Ferdinand/Vidic or Stam/Johnsen.

Like someone said, it isn’t too dissimilar to buying Bruce in 87 and then Pallister for big money in 89. It took along time of mediocrity to find the keys, but when Bruce and Pallister started gelling, noone questioned the outlay. Of course, you could say, why didn’t United just buy Pallister in 87, or another more experienced player like him for all those money? But the truth is, this processes are far from exact science.

Four managers in a row, plus a few NT managers has thought Jones and/or Smalling have in them the potential of becoming part of a top notch defence. Maybe it takes a couple of years trying to actually see the shortcomings not in their game, but in their potential. I don’t know. All I know is that when Mourinho came, we had not one part of the team that was really good, apart from GK. So all parts of the side neded to be built simultaneously. It takes time to mix snd match, even with big buys.

We aren't paying 75m now either.

Rumoured fee is in the region of 60m
 
Maguire would be a fantastic addition to the squad.

I hope this gets done ASAP.
