Maguire | NOT McGuire or MacGuire

I think he would prove a hell of a lot of his doubters wrong if he were to come here. Utd are crying out more than anything for a leader and a presence at the back, Maguire is that player.
exactly, he's not jsut a good defender and great on the ball but good leader. Think he would be perfect with Smalling, Both players beasts in the air very strong defending on the ground too. Smalling would cover for the lack of pace and Maguire for passing from the back, even though Chris can also take the ball out of defence but with three men midfield wouldn't be that important anyway and our deep line wouldn't expose Maguire much.

What is also important is that he is 25 and has been relatively injury free which cannot be said about any of our 1st team CBs bar Smalling. I am tired of Jones being on an injury table, Rojo and Bailly the sam. We should be giving them Lindelof on loan or Jones as a counter deal, They would get money on top of a still great defender who could at some point overcome his injuries and become a bargain for them..

65 Million for him is actually quite reasonable if we assume that he will be with us at least until 32. People raved about the Rio price when we signed him but it was an absolute bargain. Obviously, he's not on the same level talent wise but you have to take into account how many years service we're likely to get out of him. That's going to be around 7 years. If you look at Alderweireld who's 29. It looks like we're going to have to pay 50-60 mil for him even though he's in his last year of his contract. He's a superior defender but we'll only get 3 years out of him most likely. I'm not saying sign Maguire over Alderweireld, i'm just saying that 65million for Maguire isn't as crazy as it may seem.

It could be too much on yet another fairly good CB, and it could be the missing piece of the jigsaw.

Bailly has shown enormous quality with his feet, but is weaker with his head and unpredictable inside it. He needs a srable guy with the head of a header and a leader beside him.

Lindelöf has shown at Benfica that he has the confidence to play and the brain to play well, but not the confidence yet to lead. He played better with a Granquist beside him who is inferior in every aspect but in the ability to lead.

Apart from Rojo who is a stop gap wild card, I think Mourinho hoped both Smalling and Jones would be that leader character that Bruce, Carvalho, Ferdinand, Terry was, as they both have some of the traits, but I guess he’s been disappointed, as none have the awareness of their surroundings needed for that role.

If Maguire can be a 8/10 leader beside a 8/10 Bailly (with security) or a 8/10 Lindelöf (with confidence), it could suddenly mean a 9/10 partnership for years, which would easily be worth the splash.

Could.

That's quite a big "if"...

If I was Jose, I'd stick with what we have right now. £65 million+ for Maguire simply isn't worth it and doesn't represent value for money.

I would much rather wait until next summer when we can snap up Alderweireld for £25 million from under Levy's nose. If not then, we'll still be in a strong negotiating position in January.

Don't rate him = hate.

It looks that way and in the case of Maguire most people seem to reasonably rate him, he is just not seen like a necessary 65m purchase because he isn't really better than Smalling, who by the way is also a consistent threat when our players are able to properly kick corners and free kicks. We don't really have a quality problem when it comes to CBs, we do have an issue with Bailly, Rojo and Jones being injured though, so if we manage to sell some of them someone like Maguire could be a good addition.
I could be wrong but this view is closer to what most think, quality wise he would be a lateral move but availability being key, most would take him for a more reasonable fee and a little bit of offloading.

I am indifferent towards Maguire signing but whats with this sudden urge to hail him as some sort of great leader at the back who would shepherd our defence does this even stand the scrutiny.

I'm not sure why there is a question mark over the fee, it's not our money and if he can improve us we should pay what we need to.

I think he will definitely improve our defence, is at an age where there will be a major upside potential and seems to be the sort of character that we would expect as a club.

Didn't you get the memo? Anyone that doesn't rate him is full of 'hate' or they have an 'anti-English' agenda. It's so fecking childish.
I don't even think people "don't rate him". The majority of this thread (me included) rate him, but don't think he's worth the money.

but it wouldn't be like TheReligion to make stuff up or anything.

He's good on the ball in the sense that he can bring the ball forward from defence and drive forward, but he is not as good with his passing and this was found out a few times while playing for England this summer. Stones was the key to England's build up play from the back, rather than Maguire, who was a bit of a bomb scare at times under pressure.

He's solid defensively, good in the air and a tidy player in general, but if United are after a player that can play those creative passes from the back to link the defence up with the midfield like a player like Alderweireld, I don't think he should be the first option.

Aye, I didn't word that well, anyone who doesn't rate him as highly as his cult followers in here, is a erm hater.

Who are his cult followers? I’ve not seen anyone saying he’s the best CB in Europe, or even the best CB in the Premier League? Some people rate him, some don’t, some think he’s worth the money, some don’t, but I don’t think there’s any cult followers?

I'm not going to say Maguire wouldn't improve our defence, but buying him for £65m would sum up how shambolic our scouting and recruitment is. We could have bought him for peanuts only a year ago. It's not an isolated case either. It happens every single season. Clubs with really good scouting networks snap up highly rated talents, and then a year or two later we inevitably want them, and then we're forced to pay 5x more.

We spend so much money but we don't invest it wisely at all. We either overpay or we buy the wrong players. It's a running theme for the last God knows how many years

I understand where you’re coming from, but hindsight’s a wonderful thing. Like others have pointed out, you can look back at any transfer and make a case of buying the player a season earlier at a lower price,

It’s interesting because a lot of players talk about how moving to United comes with a new level of scrutiny and pressure. So, maybe that plays a part in our recruitment.

Is Mina better than Maguire? I honestly have no idea. I haven't seen Mina play that many games. Is he a far better all round defender?

Mina was highly rated in Brazil Serie A, a goalscoring defender, he even took a vital part giving Palmeiras a championship after so long.

I saw him several times when he was at Palmeiras. He was good. Comfort with the ball and scored goals.

After that he moved to Barca, the first Columbian defender ever to sign for the club.

And dont forget, it was Mina who scored against Maguire's mighty England. At WC 2018, he also scored against Senegal's Koulibaly.

Like i said, i dont rate Maguire highly, i saw several times at EPL he was struggling against pacey strikers.

In the past, several players proved to be crap here while being better at mid-low club. Shawcross, Evan, Will Keane. For 65 millions, we should try to get the better option.

Attackers will alway track with Mourinho. No matter how much better individually the backline could be. This isn't changing unless we ditch Jose

If we want to win important honours then our forwards need to focus on their role. We simply lack the quality for our attacking minded players to do both jobs. Thus defence need to do its job too without expecting the forward line to constantly bail them out. DDG, Matic and some help from Fred are more then enough help on that regard.

What you on about? You don't like England obviously and underrate Maguire as a result.

You see, I'm happy with people that don't rate him or do rate him. It's the ones that do rate him that seem to take umbrage with the people who aren't lauding him and they then get labelled childish things like 'haters'. If you're not one of them, don't stress about it dude. He's an ok player, I liked the look of him at Leicester and Hull but never envisaged us being linked with him for insane amounts of money, no sire.

Posts which simply say he's shit are littered throughout the place.

Not much reasoned debate as to why he's not rated, simply dislike for the player for whatever reason. Very odd considering how good he's actually been.

Using the search engine, there is one poster calling him shit, automatic-something.

My own two eyes tell me there's been more than the one.

Anyway his main weakness is his lack of pace. His technical and ariel ability is very good. Yes he's prone to the odd mistake but what young defender isn't. I think Mourinho would improve him, including his positional and tactical knowledge, which would compensate for his lack of speed.

Pairing him with Bailly would look quite good to me.

That's pretty standard on here. Many posters on here fancy themselves as scouts and call every player under the sun average. Its quite normal for players to also be highly rated on here then when they play rubbish for us they start making theories about everything wrong at the club.

There are lots of grey areas in football, and despite what some fans think, watching games does not give you a meaningful insight into the player because you're a fan that knows very little about the requirements of a top player.

Maguire has some good attributes to him, if the club deem him a good player I'll give him a shot. I also think 65m is a bit too much for him, but I'm a nobody that has never been involved in a football transfer. Van Dyke went for 75m and he isn't the second coming of Rio so good defenders are quite expensive these days.

The general consensus seems to be that he's a decent, solid defender at a good age. Romagnoli, essentially an Italian Maguire, would also be a solid option, with decent all-round ability.

I personally think it would be worth getting in someone with genuinely world class ball-playing ability, even if that pushes the risk profile (age/injuries) a little bit more eg Boateng/Bonucci/Alderweireld. I can certainly see why people might just prefer someone fit and reliable (if unspectacular), though.

Would be happy with him for £65m

Me 2!! Young, English, knows the PL, didn't freeze when asked to step up in the World Cup, seems a level headed young man who is eager to learn seems to be the consensus from those who have worked/played with him. Offload Jones and we've got a player who is better coming out from the back and just as impressive as Jones was some years ago but who fingers crossed wont have his injury problems.

We're Man Utd, why would we go for the Italian version of a player if there's a English one?

Sorry, but as an English person, I'd much rather have English talent if possible, as long as they're good enough.

Boateng is injury prone and not worth the risk, Bonucci ain't leaving Italy, and Alderweireld is being priced out of a move.

I want it on record that I agree with that, an English core is an important thing for me. Before someone use the "you don't rate X because he is english".

If we're not careful, we're going to Sleepwalk into a situation where our Quiet Men at the back All Fall Down - just The Same Old Story, season after season. This Young Savage has been a Vision in Blue, and while we might be Passing Strangers as it stands, during the transfer window things can change All in One Day.

So yeah, I think we should sign Midge Ure.
If I was...a betting man, I'd say we have a good chance with this signing. I think its between us orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Rapid Viennaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Maguire’s never going to be regarded as elite if big clubs don’t give him the platform.

Bailly and Lindelof are flawed footballers, and cost a collective £60m. Maguire for circa that price offers stability and a low risk investment over a long period of time.

Ideally I’d sell the aforementioned two, sign Joe Gomez (who’s going to be immense, although prizing them from those parasites will be mission almost impossible) and pair him with Maguire long term.

Why not? Kane is :)

I can understand that view and, judging by recent press reports, it's one the club shares.
