Maguire | NOT McGuire or MacGuire

Good in the air, good with his feet. Yes he lacks pace but he's a clever player and would be a great addition to the squad.

and yet you fail to see my point
That he’s been used incorrectly? That doesn’t excuse an inability to head a ball in the most basic form of defending. I watched him during the WC too, where supposedly he did well but I still saw his deficiency of not attacking headers and bad positioning to win headers

But hey he seems like a nice guy so I hope he proves me wrong because we can’t go into a partnership with Bailly and having 2 cbs who aren’t great in the air

I see some pace and an ability to tackle! But his confidence is so low due to be used wrongly (at full back on on the right of the CB pair). I feel he's one of those guys that needs to be loved

He’s at the wrong club then. We need winners, you could indulge someone with a mercurial talent - but not an average CB. It’s very common for CBs to play at FB to get game time. I don’t see a top talent in there.

yes but on the left of the two...
I doubt that his average displays so far would have been improved if he played LCB.

There is not a single outstanding quality you can point out in him, simply not shown enough to demonstrate that if he switched to LCB he would be good enough.

watch the match where he marked Glen Murray v Brighton. He got bullied for 90 mins. Murray is awkward but he's hardly Duncan Ferguson in his prime. I get that it takes time to settle into the pace of the game in the pl, but to be found wanting physically against a championship level striker says a lot. Bailly could compensate for his lack of physicality but as others have said he himself is poor in the air.

Exactly. It’s not a positional problem as @mitchmouse seems to be saying. It’s that so far Lindelöf hasn’t shown that he’s got the basic skills required to be a top level cb. All I see for him is being our ‘€40m Blind’ which is poor given the outlay. I’d rather our utility players were our youngsters getting experience

again I ask how does anyone know when he hasn't played in his best position. he looked pretty OK in the WC and the thought about the young players is just a pipe dream

Again, how is an inability to head a ball anything to do where he plays? It was the same at the WC. He’s an expensive Daley blind clone

I’d love him. Great age, too.

Only transfer that seems realistic that gives me any excitement.

United play a deep-ish line. Maguire's pace isn't as important as is being made out.

I'c love him here.

Right now is probably the worst time to sign him, his price will be heavily inflated. He's not worth the 50/60 million we'd have to fork out for him. His aerial threat is a massive asset but I think it'd be wise of Mourinho and the club to give it another season of thorough scouting before forking out that much money for him.

He's worth 50m in the current market quite comfortably, that's how much you're going to play for a defender of his quality and age. Especially when he's English.

If we aren’t getting Toby, then Maguire is our best option. Can’t we buy him for Money + Smalling or Jones?

Blind doesn't actually have obvious problem with marking physical or aerially better player. He's just a bit slow. It's a mystery of why Mou doesn't rate him, then bought an inferior player in Lindelof.

He's certainly better than you'd expect in that regard, but he definitely had trouble with those types of players at times in that season. Of course there was the match where he held his own against Lukaku, but there were other matches where his physical limitations were exposed.

I do agree that so far (and the emphasis is on 'so far') Lindelof has looked a downgrade on what Blind was in that season he had at centreback. Obviously the idea is that hopefully Lindelof ends up bringing all the advantages of Blind while being stronger and faster, but we haven't seen it so far.

What's the problem. We should sign Maguire if Levy is going to hold us to ransom. He is younger and stronger than Alderweireld with future captain material. IMO

Maguire isnt much better than Smalling or Jones and none of the 3 are good enough for top level of football in Europe. Our sights should be much much higher , but our sights are probably that of the Glaziers and are happy with 4th place and get out of the group in champions league .

yes this.

I doubt Maguire can become as good as Toby and the latter has different qualities to what we see from Maguire.

Not so quick, not so good technique, not good on ball, little raw, solid in tackles and air. Classic united defender in last 5 years.
Is he even better than jones or smalling or lindelof? We must aim higher, much higher than maguire

We are desperate

He's very good on the ball tbh - he can play out from the back quite comfortably.

Wonder if signing Fred (and possibly Sandro) would have an effect on us signing Marquinhos. Would rather sign him over Maguire.

Can't we wait for like 5 months and bid again for Toby in the Winter transfer window?
He would have 6 months left on his contract before the clause becomes active and maybe then Levy will be happy to sell him for 40 mill.

Maguire is great, so underrated on here !! His ''lack'' of pace is overestimated when you consider ppl wanting Alderwield which is even slower!

Sounds exactly like the scouting report a United Scout once wrote about Steve Bruce. Look how well that turned out.
Yeah, except one big thing. Football changed. What all big clubs have similiar? Quick and ball playing defenders. Old school defenders are history now or to say it better; with old fashion defenders you can't win anything.

£65m is it? That is 72m Euros, I reckon we could get the Italians to listen for bids for Khoulibaly and Skriniar for that price.

If you lot are fed up with the likes of Jones having a massive brainfart every now and again, Maguire definitely isn't the answer. £65 million christ, now is literally the worst time to sign him.

For 72 mil you can nearly buy bonucci and sandro. Two world class defenders instead average PL defender.

Hull's and Leicester's defense have looked really solid whilst he's been involved haven't they? Hull conceded a massive 80 and Leicester 60.

Ramos, Bonucci, Hummels, Chiellini. Top defenders don’t recall them being quick.

The Caf base most transfers on their weird perceptions to be honest. He looks a little heavy so he must be a big brute. Anyone who actually watches him play football know he’s a really good defender and is good on the ball, and a serious warrior which we really miss.

I agree with some saying that with that money we could get a bigger upgrade on what we have.

He has personality which we lack. A major reason behind England’s great World Cup.
