Television Mad Men | SPOILERS

I said I'd give it 2 seasons to see. Season 1's generally sets the scene but still has more action than this, though I expected this to be a slow burner. I hope its great Scrumpet, cos it has just felt like a soap so far

Just started watching and got 1 episode left of season 1. I'm not a huge fan of it but as it has so much hype I'm trying to give it a real good chance. At the moment it feels like a well written soap. Just a bunch of dicks sleeping around with each other. Normally stuff comes to a head in shows like these but there is feck all happening. Does it get better?

Thats my overall feelin with Madmen too. I watched an episode & have tried to watch the odd other one & i just dont see the draw. Its borin as feck.. but each to their own... give me The Wire, The Soprano's, Breaking Bad, Dexter, Suits, Criminal Minds, Elementary, Blue Bloods & plenty more, other than that show tbh!

So I finished season 1. Not sure if this needs to be spoiled but will just in case

Peggy was pregnant this whole time (explains her getting larger) and she didn't know at all before? And to make it worse she was already 9 months pregnant?! How the feck do you not know for that long? Thought that was stupid.

Besides Betty, cos she's hot and doesn't do much, all the characters are absolute dickheads. There is almost no redeeming feature to any of them

Betty the only non-dickhead character in the show?

You still hear about that sort of thing happening nowadays, I imagine it was a bit more common back then.

Anyway, yeah, probably not the show for you if you hate all the characters.

So, i'm assuming thats the detail in the spoiler above in Scrumpets post then Irwin? :nono: :)

Never asked, but why is there a "y" in your name now man? Whyyyyyyyy??

Sorry bro, I assumed you knew from how I read your post.

The Y is from Dwaynes obsession with Moyesifying peoples user names.

There is none.

Don't come into the thread if you haven't watched the show, simples.

I was only messin with Irwin anyway about the spoiler, hence the :)

...but yeah - that seems to be the drill alright - "don't come into the thread if you haven't watched the show"

Thats fair enough with movies, but many new tv shows start in the States before the Uk & Ireland - like Dexter for instance. That started last nite in the States i think, but wont be on here til next Spring, which is annoying as ever with that show. Disappointing that u cant come onto chat about it now, without findin out the goings on of an episode(s). Ah well..

Bloody laptop has been riddled with virus's downloadin shit (so i can see if it downloads & then i can report it to the Police), so i'm leavin that be just to keep the blood pressure down!

Ahhh man, seriously dont fret i was only jokin (i had a :) at the end of the sentence) - i dont even watch Madmen dude... :D Each to their own though!

The mad doc eh?! Yeah i seen the altered names alright - Moyespopper etc... doesnt make much difference to yours though - thank God says you!

Can't believe anyone would call it just a soap. It does't have mafia bosses or drug lords but it transports you to its own perfectly-crafted world in just the same way. What's interesting about The Sopranos is what's interesting about Mad Men too; it's not about the drama itself but about how it takes place within that unique world. And of course because of how that world is brought to life by the art direction, the writing and the acting.

It's essentially a (very well made) macho period drama. I love it. I'm only 2/3 of the way through the second series but I don't understand the criticisms of Betty. I can see why she's unlikeable if you admire the masochistic 60s culture but she's an essential character and I think January Jones portrays her well. I get that her character has changed over time but still, I like her. Don's obviously a dick for the most part but he's a great character.

I just finished this after a bit of a marathon over the last month. It's good, without being anything special. There is a feeling of style over substance. It also seems to be getting fluffier and more silly as the seasons pass. I wouldn't put it anywhere near stuff like The West Wing/The Sopranos/The Wire

Careful on this thread man - there's a non spoiler policy & Irwin's liable to tell ya what happens in the remaining episodes of Series 2 etc... :D

Tried to watch it, but its just not for me to be honest & there's no point thinkin i'd get into a 1960's American version of Eastenders Fashion Show either :smirk:

Didn't like it at first. To be honest, nothing grabbed my attention during season 1, even though it was good. Tried the second season, watched one episode and gave up. Now, I gave another try, and love it. I'm at the 7th episode of the 4th season. Brilliant episode with Don and Peggy. I guess it boils down to periods in my life. It's just awesome for me now.

In a way, after Don/Duck's scuffle I realized something. No wonder why 'Murica got softer and "pussier", you had guys running the show that all served in wars (Korea, WWII, Vietnam...) killed a lot, came back and prospered in various fields. Tough guys to say the least. What type of people do you got on the head of most corporations today? It was inevitable.

And how ddid this guys even function? They were all raging alcoholics.

That was "The Suitcase" right? That's probably the show's best episode, and one of the best one hour episodes of TV ever made.

As for the show itself, I think, at the risk of sounding elitist, the general public are too used to watching plot-driven melodrama, and subsequently get bored by there being "nothing happening" in Mad Men. The characters on Mad Men are so richly written and developed; so flawed and yet so real. The dialogue is outstanding, and the show is an anthology almost, whose central axis is the history (and commentary thereof) of America itself.

Piss off. I didn't like it when Breaking Bad did it and I don't like it now. Either show the full series or feck off

Been rewatching this show again, a season a day. Season 3 tomorrow. I legitimately think this could be the greatest show ever made.

I find it more difficult to rank the seasons for this than for other shows. They've melted together somewhat in my mind.

Me and the Mrs watched all 6 seasons recently for the first time and love the thing; it's so well made and well written. Only problem is that I'm having some major withdrawal symptoms now. May go back to the start again before Season 7 kicks off in April/May.

The show gets better as it advances (even though its superb at the start). Personal favorite episode is "The Other Woman" - honestly one of the best episodes of any TV show I've ever seen.

True. When they formed SCDP the show reached new heights.

Great episode, when goes to see her after the fact just.....

Watching the whole thing all over again, great seeing where the characters where when they first started.

Best scene of the show ever.

Part 1 of the final season starts on Monday in the states - looking forward to it, be interesting to see how things pan out.

Can't wait. One of the great and iconic shows of the last decade. The reviews are the best it's received although at this point are totally redundant. I'm disappointed in the split season structure but still, will be terrific to have it back.

One of the greatest shows ever, for me. Comfortably better than Breaking Bad, certainly in my top five.

Hope it finishes strongly, I didn't find season six particularly great.
