Television Mad Men | SPOILERS

Some classic Betty this episode.

Loved Roger's line about the Hershey guy walking around wearing a sandwich board.

Bigger question is why does Joan have it in for Don? Of all the people in that office he probably backed her more than anyone.
That surprised me a little too. I guess she doesn't want the boat rocked, things have gone pretty well for her during Don's absence.

Why is Peggy so shitty at Don?

I took it as frustration stemming from her predicament. If her situation weren't so dire under Lou, both creatively and professionally, she'd have likely been glad to see him, as the other creatives were. Instead, she probably resents Don for the simple reason that she's realised she needs Don, which for someone as headstrong as Peggy, doesn't sit well with her. Her declaration that she was getting on just fine without him seemed like defiance in face of adversity rather than any personal issue with him.

Elsewhere in the episode, I felt curiously uncomfortable watching Don return to work, as if I were nervous about an old friend heading for inevitable embarrassment. It was then somewhat stirring how Roger went to bat for Don, taking on Jim, Bert and Joan.

Am I the only one gutted that we don't see Don in California building things from the ground up there? I feel he did everything that could be done at SCP.

I think Peggy reacted that way as she still blames Don for Ted moving away to LA. IIRC, Don never had a chance to explain Peggy the real reason why Ted moved to Cali. The last episode and the whole gaffe with the valentine flowers showed how Peggy still itched for Ted's love.

Joan's evolution into this corporate executive who no place for sentiments, and looking after only the firms benefit, was a nice addition to the depth of the character. Don changing his ways has been the continuing theme of the season. In previous seasons Don would have nailed the flirty air-hostess in the cockpit. Who would have thought that the hotel room he was knocking on was Rodgers, and not that women who offered herself to him at dinner. Brilliant.

The scene's with Betty and Bobby were excellent too. Poor Bobby, one silly mistake and Mrs. Ice queen turned into her rude self.

"It was a perfect day, and he ruined it". What a cold, heart-less, self-indulgent bitch.

The episode was a nice parallel with Bobby looking for her mother's attention and Don going back to SC&P in hope of acceptance from the people who estranged him.

That's what he would have done in the past, starting over, as he "only likes the beginning of things". I think he's up for the fight now, accepting those horrific terms to show all the people that he can become a better person. REDEMPTION, OH YEAH.

And what did Don "do" to the other partner guy in California?
Messing with his head, making him go to California. I think none of them actually knows about him and Peggy?

Was a great episode, maybe the best of this series so far. Think they did a good job of making us feel bad for Don for the reception he got at SC&P to the point where you were willing him to go his own way at the end of the final scene.

Don in the office was brilliantly awkward. I find the Don/Megan stuff boring now, but once it moved past that it was excellent.

I'm glad we're now only subjected to Betty every 3/4 episodes.

Hmm, I think there's more to it than that, else it would be at odds with the way the opening episodes have highlighted Peggy's plight, particularly with how desperate her situation is at work. No matter how much she might blame Don over Ted or blame him for leaving her with Lou, she's realised she wants him back - and that annoys and frustrates her. That she says in particular, "well we don't miss you" was, I think, the writers giving us a glimpse into what Peggy is actually thinking/feeling. I hope it's taking this trajectory at least as ultimately Mad Men has, at its core, been the story of Peggy and Don, and despite how fractious their relationship has been at times they are the two characters who have understood one another the best.

Started this and really enjoying it. Thought I might find it boring but despite the slow pace it's great. Really stylistic with the substance there at the same time.

It really gets even better when they hit the mid 60's.

Have just started watching this (first episode) so won't be reading the thread in case I see spoilers. Just want to ask one question.

It seems to be a show about very little, so, does it hold your attention for the 7(?) seasons it's run so far, and is it worth watching more of?

it's a character piece more than anything, the actual advertising firm is just surplus to keep them maturing and evolving throughout.

Stick with it, it takes a while to really hook you in, but by around the 8th/9th episode of the first season I loved it.

I think if you stick with it for the first 3-4 episodes, you will be hooked! I absolutely love the show. I think I watched the first 5 seasons in 2 or 3 weeks! The character development in the show is amazing!

I need to *procure* the previous and the current season as it was not available on Netflix. I'm just waiting for it to end so that I can watch both the seasons in a few days.

Well worth it...it's not all action or anything more about the characters, how they evolve and how their lives change.

The writing is superb throughout...plus it has some hilarious moments. Sterling has some great one liners. The style of the show too is phenominal considering it's based 45 years ago.

It's brilliant

Like six feet under, it's more about characters and their lives. The marketing agency like the funeral parlour in sfu is just the setting

Just watched the latest episode, thought it was excellent. A lot of little things throughout that were simple and subtle but worked perfectly (the parallels between Betty and Don's stories, the part where Don knocked on a door after being approached by the woman in the Algonquin and it turned out to be Roger, the Peggy altercation), and the whole 'Don going back to work' was really excellent, right from the moment he was getting ready until the pay off. That gif posted above is excellent

I didn't expect him to accept the terms, he truly is a new person. The rest of the season is going to be very interesting, I guess we'll get quite a bit of Peggy/Don scenes which will tie up the series very nicely I expect.

Yeah, you get the feeling that Lou will really test Don's patience and resolve. Will be interesting to see whether he is able to put aside his pride or just blows up at a certain point.

Am I the only one that has an intense dislike for Peggy? Something about her insecure yet somehow smug face pisses me off so much!

This episode was so heavy handed I felt. Don having to go to Peggy's office after expecting her to come to his, Roger and the hippies, Dawn in the boardroom. The whole thing felt like it was beating me over the head visually. I get that it's meant to show a changing world, but it shouldn't be done so blatantly or so rapidly.

The Roger bits in particular were awful, "you didn't come to my birthday when I was 4" - Is that really fecking comparable to abandoning your child entirely?

I like Peggy, but her and Joan are complete assholes to Don. 95% of the rest of the show should hate Don, not them.

"Hey everyone, I understand the dry cleaning's ready…".. Roger is so good
