Luke Shaw nearer to Manchester United exit [The Times]

He’s clearly extremely low on confidence and let’s be honest Mourinho is not the type to build up a low confidence player. He’s still got the potential to be an extremely good left back if a manager is willing to be patient and put an arm round him.
Is low confidence now going to be the go-to excuse for every rubbish player we buy?

Basically.

If they don’t like him and he’s rubbish, “he’s just rubbish”

If they like him and he’s rubbish, it’s low confidence.

Refuse to believe he's on £130k per week. Would we really give that to an 18 year old at the time?

The leg break bought him a lot of time and sympathy from a lot of people, including me, but those 8 games prior seem to be the exception rather than the rule, as he was completely unfavoured and unremarkable in his first season here, and we've not really seen him since he did break his leg.

It'a a shame. The leg break certainly did set him back, no question, but he should have been back on track by now and long ago. Most of us were excited about him getting back in the side at the start of last season, but it didn't happen. It's a shame to think what could have been if he didn't break his leg, as he seemed to finally be knuckling down on and off the pitch, looked in great shape and capable of playing a full 90 regularly and to a high level.

I'd say get rid, but who would replace him? Are there any top class left backs available? There's a void of quality full backs in the PL currently.

It is what was rumoured when he first signed and Shaw said it was bollocks. Probably closer to 70k which is the kind of wage Smalling etc had at the time.
I thought he said £100k was bollocks, not £130k.

If he's leaving 100%, perhaps it's a task for Jose to go back to his old ways of finding great defenders from other leagues like he did countless times for Chelsea. Probably the best time for it. Borthwick-Jackson and Mitchell is a bit of a question mark.

Odds on him leaving & playing well for his next club?
Going back to Soton would be more than just a 2nd chance for him, as things standing right now. He needs start playing competitive football soon, or he may not even make it on the bench at whoever he'll join.

I just wish we would give him a run of 4-5 games, he is a very talented left back but injuries have stalled his career completely. If he gets his physical and mental issues sorted he will be one of the best LB's in the premier league no matter which club he is playing for.

Has always has been very fast and has a great engine on him, never stops running up and down the flank for 90+ mins. This is very hard to achieve and requires an extremely high level of fitness+determination, I don't think he is as lazy and has a poor mentality as many people here believe.
There is very little evidence for any of the assertions made above.

I wish we'd just play him, regardless of his form. See what happens. Ashley Young is not the future. Luke Shaw could be. Just give him some consecutive starts, regardless of how he plays. 5 minutes at the end of a game is fecking pointless.

He'd have to prove his fitness by playing a number of games for United in the first team to get anywhere near 20 Million quoted in the papers.

To the detriment of the team?

To the detriment of the team?
There's got to be a run of "easy" games at some point in the season, say 3 in a row where he can play. I'm not saying put him in against City but how do we even know it's to the detriment of the team? He's had a half against Burton and 15 minutes against Swansea as far as I can tell. It's not like Ashley Young is so fecking brilliant.

We signed him cos he looked fecking mint. And for a very short period he was. I just don't believe he's become a bad player.

It's got nothing to do with what we believe. When nearly every manager he has played under comes out and says essentially the same stuff, something isn't right with him

The blind support Shaw gets is so odd. He's basically been called a fat shit who is lazy by just about every manager he's played under. In his years here I could count on my hand the number of games where he's played at a level that justifies the hype he has around him.

It's one of our weakest positions, stop dicking about with these projects and get in a proper player who's ready to help get us back to the top.

The manager sees him in training every day. If he looks like shit there, why should he get a start? Just because?

Yea, literally just because. Maybe that's what he needs to kickstart himself. No risk, no reward. Instead we sign Young for another year.

I believe the talent he has shown before, both here and at Saints is worth trying everything to get at.

That's not the way you manage a football club. Players need to earn a place in the starting 11. If he can't motivate himself or kickstart himself in training, he has no right starting for us.

We'd be lucky to get 10m for him let alone 20... As for his replacement, City also had weaknesses at their fullback spots so they got rid of the deadwood and spent top dollar on defenders. We need to do the same. Go get Alex Sandro from Juventus for left and someone of similar quality at the right back spot and be done with it.

The problem is, he's never looked as fit as he did for Southampton. Definitely carrying at least 8 pounds extra with him. With the guidance he's access to at United, how's he not leaned down? Must be a mental issue.

Odds on him leaving & playing well for his next club?

If he leaves the odds of him playing well at next club are lower, than if he fights for a place here and then leaving at the top.

If he moves on and performs well I'll be happy for him, it's obvious it isn't happening here though.

For a variety of reasons it has been a disastrous signing. If United get a £20m offer for him they should think it's Christmas Day.

The question is, how much are we going to get from selling him? You know he's still very young and the market is crazy, but he is also kind of shite too.

It seems that his time at United is over. He couldn't compete with Young, Darmian and Blind and prove himself though he was given more then enough time for that. It will be profitable for both sides: we get money and buy a new player on this position whilst Luke has another chance to prove he is worthy player and to succeed in his career. I don't know any reason why Shaw should stay here for a while.

When is his contract up? Surely the best move is to loan him out in January? There must be a mid/lower premier league team who would play him. If he does well, we can either look to then get him back in the team next year or, at least, his sale value will have increased. As it is, I doubt we’d get more than £10 million.

If you buy too many young players based on potential, sometimes they just don't fulfil it. It's the risk. In some situations it's better to just buy the quality. Arguably positions like fullback you can get the quality for far less than other positions, so you don't need to take a punt so much on youth. Particularly in the modern game with the importance of quality fullbacks. City realised this last summer.

You take a punt on someone like Martial who is also young because the reward of him turning into a star outweighs the costs now. And the fact established star attackers cost a shit load more than established fullbacks.
