Luke Shaw nearer to Manchester United exit [The Times]

We have a 22 year old LB with enormous potential, who has had a rough time with injuries (one of which was very bad), unstable situation at managerial level and coupled with his personal issues. In the last 2 months he has showed why we shouldn't give up on him just yet. That notion that because we are a big club we must only be ruthless so we can go back where we belong is total rubbish.

We are in no situation to write of a talent such as Shaw in a position we lack quality, especially when we need reinforcements in 3-4 other positions. Great teams aren't just bought, they are built with patience and vision. If Shaw continues to build on his recent form we save 50m and potentially we have the best LB in the league.

Very sensible. I agree. Okay it might not work out, beyond this he may struggle to establish himself and it might be best for all concerned if he moves on. What I don't quite understand is why now he's come back into the side and actually looks useful, people are determined to get rid as soon as possible. He's back and playing well, looks better than the current alternative, at least in the short term, let's see what he can do. He seems to be back in the manager's good books now too. For the time being at least.

I do wonder if it's another one of those issues where people feel drawn towards the most draconian opinion for the sake of being heard.

"Hmm, he's back in the team suddenly and looking decent. My conclusion: chop his head off! Next!"

I think this is the case more often than not.

On the other hand I always maintained that he would be much better and useful option than Darmian and Blind for example, but for some reason Jose didn't think the same. I hope we are over that at least and he gets regular chances.

Don't think it's a case of ability, think it's a case of attitude and application. The same issues seem to come up time and time again irrespective of which manager. Not sure if these have hindered his recovery from injuries or not. I guess we've seen it before where clubs will bail on players and sell on rather than waiting for another period of questionable professionalism. For me, he's still a young lad and with some maturity and the right guidance, could def be the best LB in the league...

Well none of that applies to Shaw I'm afraid. Even more so if you take in consideration his turn in fortunes the last couple of games, two of which he was voted Man od the match.

Yeah he's played well when he's played, but that counts for naught when he's hardly playing.

I don't know what to feel about Shaw. I want him succeed, obviously, but I don't know if that's likely to happen.

I still hold out hope that the lad will make it here. I think he is on his last couple of chances though. Maybe that's sunk in because he seems to have turned a corner.

We're also in no position to clear the path for a player who has shown very little at the club, is very injury prone, and has had his attitude questioned by Mourinho many of his former managers just because he's had a hard time. We're a football club not a charity. He's been okay recently so that suddenly means he's good enough? The leg break was 2 years ago and he has proved nothing since then. He has had chances to establish himself, this is fourth season at the club and apart from a handful of games hasn't looked anything near a top left back let alone someone who should be starting week in week out for us. I wanted him to succeed but as far as I'm concerned if Luke Shaw leaves it would be no great loss.

I tend to agree with this, really. I’ve been extremely ticked off by Shaw, but he has showed some promise during the last few weeks - he should definitely get the rest of the season to convince Mourinho.

By basing your opinion of what someone has shown at this club we should get rid of half of the squad. That includes Rojo, Blind, Darmian, Herrera, Mkhitaryan. He has shown recently that he deserves a chance, not all of them got their leg snapped in two. And no, he didn't have chances to establish himself under Jose. Now he is getting a chances and he is showing that he is a very good option to have.

I think he will stay and sign new contract as he is getting minutes step by step. He became the second choice LB ahead of Blind and Darmian now. Seems Mourinho starts to trust him on the pitch after all these drama last year.

The players you named could be sold and I wouldn't blink an eye. We need a clear-out of some of the deadwood we're carrying and an injection of actual quality. We made good steps in getting rid of Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Rooney, Memphis, Januzaj etc. but the squad needs more renovation. As I said the leg break was 2 seasons ago, he has recovered since then and he has played games since then so it isn't an excuse. He's young enough to turn it around I suppose but if the club decides to cut it's losses and recruit a top LB it wouldn't faze me.

Hope he turns it around between now and the end of the season. Even if only because the club doesn't have endless funds and it could save us a fortune.

Agreed. We have seen and gone though the worst phase of his time and now we are seeing what a good player we have. Shaw looks fitter than before and is playing like he has everything to prove.

It would be foolish to give up on Shaw when he has started playing well.

Would save us 50m if he sorts out his attitude. I've no doubts he still has world class or close enough potential. What he's shown his last few games is enough for me to extend his stay til the summer.

Turn it around Luke.

I'm not disputing that's Lingard best position.

Miki was signed by jose and immediately banished from the squad, when he hit form this year, again Jose shunned him from the squad. Miki is used too sparingly by Jose for me, its clear there is an underlying issue between them, which is why Miki cant hit form, as he is often left in the cold for no good reason.

I've said in various posts, Lingard Is our in-form player. Despite him missing an open goal against Leicester and being poor on times, he's deserving to have the spot currently.

But Miki is better than anything we have at AM, just Jose opts not to use him regularly enough.

Mkhitaryan has been given more than enough chances this season.

There are no clear upgrades on the market, and Shaw with a few months of games under his belt could be elite (he’s already proven to be very good since coming back)

If he can work on his crossing, he’s worthy of United’s leftback role for the next decade: give him 18 months, then evaluate whether Kieran Tierney is a better option.

I don't think we'll wait 18 months but he'll get until the summer.

Rose and Sandro are both on the market.

Its nice to see him getting games under his belt. He really needs to work on his positioning. I feel he gets sucked inside the penalty box and leaves the opposing winger easy crossing opportunities.
On the other side, he adds dynamism to the left flank without any great end product. Him and Martial can be a good partnership if allowed to develop. With Martial stepping inside, Luke can provide a good option on the outside if he times his runs well.

Ditto.

He was outstanding until the legbreak as well.
I think he's ok, and just needs more so confident in his ability, how much is another left back going to cost, not when it seems the club is not going to get much more in . They can' keep spending £100 million or so every summer. I would persevere with him, and spend on 2 midfielders. And would still buy another striker.

Did Shaw pick a knock on Friday? If he didn't, then I really don't understand why Jose dropped Shaw tonight. He finally regained fitness and it's not like he should be tired. It's probably good for someone like Shaw to just keep on playing and keeping in peak match fitness.

Anyway, I don't get the decsion by jose and it must be hard for Shaw in terms of confidence.

Jose doesn’t trust him defensively yet, and I can’t say I blame him. Young has had a good season and has done everything asked of him, whereas Shaw has at least one big mistake in him every game. I think if he keeps this trajectory though, he’ll work his way in.

It was always going to happen. Young had been good until his spell out, so he remains first choice until performances dictate otherwise. That performance may have been tonight though. I can't decide if he was ok or rubbish tonight but it's hard to assess clearly sometimes so soon after the game.

Shaw is back in after that from Young. He’s too lightweight to be a defender.

He needs to be playing games when fit at this stage of his career. It's clear he'll never be Jose's first choice. I can see him leaving to someone like Everton or Leicester and then popping up at Chelsea or City as a world class left back. Another De Bruyne, Salah episode.

I just thought that Shaw did enough to play himself into the first team. I mean, if Jose still regards Young as a better LB then I fear that there isn't much Shaw can do at this point. It's disappointing. He did an interview where he was full of confidence and talking about kicking on but then he gets dropped tonight due to tactical decision.

It seems to be the way Jose works (unless it's a big money signing). He'll keep playing any form player until they play badly a few times then the next in line will step in. Shaw moved closer tonight imo.

I expect Shaw to play on Sunday. Young was pretty poor tonight (as everyone was). Shaw is still well on the first team radar I think.

He should definitely be starting. There is a good player in Shaw. Obviously he had some shockers for us but I think that was due to his fitness issues.

I would love Luke Shaw to be a success and many still believe he will be a good success without any real evidence.

His first season wasn’t great, he was good for about 6 games until his horrendous injury. Since then he initially looked scared to get stuck in (completely understandable). Now he just looks unfit.

He has been treated badly by Mourinho in my opinion. However there is no excuse as a professional footballer to look overweight and has done for 2 years. That tells me he has a poor attitude to fitness and training.

He will end up a Spurs or a mid table team where there’s no pressure to win. Then everyone will cry what a great player he is after some okay performances, much like Memphis Depay right now.
