Paraphrasing Mourinho on Shaw just now: "He was waiting for quite a long time [to play]. Not easy to give opportunity to player like that who hadn't played for many months.

"Told him it wasn't a test so don't feel pressure to play and was happy with his performance - especially going forward."

Scholes: "Can see what he brings. He's a flying machine. Okay he got caught for the goal but without doubt he's the best LB at the club. Can't think of one as quick as that who can change the game like he does."

Gerrard: "Think wing back suits him better as it takes away a bit of the defensive responsibility."

All three of Rio, Scholes and Gerrard said good things.

Very dangerous to sell the boy, he is too young to give up on. Would suck to see him suddenly play well for another team every week, because that could happen.

His talent will always be there and his ability will become much better with playing, but the worrying thing is the injuries. Will he keep his fitness or will he just get little niggles all the time? I think this decision lies with our medical staff more than Mourinho.

Mourinho giving Shaw the platform now to audition for a January sale, its all about maximising the fee!!

Delighted, hopefully can follow it up over Christmas. As awesome as Young has been Shaw brings more pace and threat in behind.

I was happy to see the hunger in his game - fight was still there after a long time off.

Agree completely. There was a post earlier in the thread saying that both Shaw's and Blind's rustiness could be forgiven due to lack of game time. One has suffered from that much more than the other.
Blind is playing very few minutes and you have to take into consideration that defense is very reliant on continuity and understanding. I'd give Blind a pass also, but Shaw's case is different. I'd concentrate on the positives though, Shaw was very positive tonight and lets hope Jose didn't make his mind up before this game.

At the very least he brings more to the table than Darmian, so hopefully he'll get matches in now with the fixture congestion looming through the Christamas and New Year's period.

I’d pick every defender on our books before Darmian at LB or RB.

Really encouraging performance. In terms of raw talent he's by far our best left back. But can't see Jose giving him many opportunities as it's not worth the risk and we have an in form ashley young. Really disappointing scenario all in all.

I think Shaw's performance was among the best today.

It is a bit premature to sell him with this performance in mind.

Especially because unlike Darmian and Blind he's got the speed necessary to play as a fullback/wingback.

Sounds like Shaw has finally started to improve his attitude / fitness - good news, another player back in the fold

I hope he'll become the best left back we saw him at Southampton so it could save us £50m  50m is necessary for another position.

Serious question: Has Mourinho ever indicated his attitude was a problem this season? I don't remember seeing any quotes from him indicating that and at the end of last season he seemed happy with Shaw's attitude and progress. He started him in the critical 2nd leg against Anderlecht and praised him for playing through cramp IIRC.

The situation with him this year basically not playing at all until tonight has been weird, I just don't remember him actually saying anything about Shaw's attitude or fitness.

He look to be in good fitness. I think his next game will be against Bristol I think so hope he can do well in that one.

No doubt he got speed and strenght, but he have a lot to work with in other areas.

I thought he did recently and also last season although I can't remember the quotes, maybe someone can

Looked like he was fighting for his United career tonight.

You could tell he hadnt played in a while. Got caught out a few times, and looked really tired, at times. Guess that was to be expected, though.

In terms of on the ball, I thought he was good. Made a few powerful runs. Made some clever runs off it too. Felt his volley was really unlucky.

All in all, a very positive outcome for Shaw tonight.

Hope he gets more chances noow.

I think his only comment about Shaw of late was that Shaw needed a run of games which he couldn't afford to give. Most of the comments about Shaw's attitude has come from journalists/former players.

Last season he did say he had to think for Shaw during a game, but after(?) that he praised him for playing the full game v Anderlecht.

Mourinho gave two comments regarding Shaw. One was about not thinking during the game, he had to be a babysitter for Shaw. Two was about his recurring injuries which meant he needed to get back into match fitness which he could not guarantee.

He was very good tonight. You could tell he was playing his socks off. Would loved for him to score that chance.

The comments from Mou are encouraging and I thought he played well but, feck me, what the hell is he doing going down with cramp in the 75th minute?! It wasn’t even a back and forth game. We were camped in their half. He only had to cover half the pitch and he still couldn’t hack it.

Am actually quite pissed off. He has nothing else to prove other than being committed and physically fit and he fecking cramps up with 15 minutes still to play. Christ almighty, he would try any manager’s patience.

Was very pleased with him tonight.. He is our best left back when fit..

Don't know about that, potentially maybe, but hard to look past Young on recent form alone. Still, good to see him have a positive game, hopefully more to come before we throw him the feck out

Shaw has had some sort of physical problem in almost every game he's played under Mourinho. He was not injury prone at Southampton, so I think his leg break has changed his physiology to the point where he struggles to perform in a proper match.

Maybe. Although when you look at how often he’s looked overweight in his time with United his issues look as much psychological as physiological.

His ball carrying ability is always there. A very good player going forward. His final ball are a bit lacking though.

About his defending, I would think it was down to not playing at this level for months. He has always been a defender. It should not be too hard to fix it if he is given more chances imo.

How many players and managers have talked about how only playing matches can get you properly match fit? It doesn't matter how well you've done your preparation in the gym and in training, you will hear time and time again that your first competitive game back always hits you like a brick wall.

He's young and he's been in training for plenty of time and as you say it wasn't an especially physically demanding game - although any FB or WB will generally cover more ground than most positions - so he doesn't have much excuse, but given that he played well and in light of the above, I say he gets a pass for that.

Showed a bit of fight tonight. That's all most of us are looking for. We know he has the quality. Burst himself for an opportunity, give everything when he gets in. A couple more performances like that and he's back in the game.

I get that “match fitness” might give an edge. Marginal gains and all that. But fecking going down with cramp with 15 minutes left to play - in such a controlled and comfortable match -is borderline disgraceful. Wayne Rooney was the classic, genetically un-athletic footballer, who needed to play every week to be at his best. And he paid the price with an unusually brief career at the highest level. But I never once remember him getting cramp in normal time. That’s just unacceptable.

Feck knows what’s going on in his head. Maybe Shaw needs the carrot of regular first team football to even make the minimum effort required in training? Which is obviously a big problem but hey, yong and lernin, I guess...

Dare to say it, but whenever I listened to Stevie G, he sounded like a decent pundit.

I've always been a fan of Shaw and I'm glad he got his long overdue chance and took it with both hands with a good performance. However I cant agree that he's currently our best left back. Valencia gets a lot of credit for how he converted to right back, but in recent games Ashley Young has been great on the left too. Shaw should obviously be our backup however, while Young is in a good patch of form.
