From that article '[United fans] recall the surging runs he used to make down the left hand side on a regular basis'

Am I the only one who has absolutely no recollection of this whatsoever? The examples picked out in the article (and the run of 3 to 4 games before he got his leg broken) are about the only examples I can think of of Luke Shaw making surging runs. My biggest abiding memory of him from before the left back is of him being unfit and injured a lot.

I do remember the near universal praise he was getting on here, "near worldclass", "one of the best LBs around" etc. His fall from grace among United fans going from "near WC" to "fat lump" is actually one of the most stunning changes in opinion I've witnessed on here, unless I'm remembering things wrong.

The gist of it, is that some fans want to turn the club into a nursery instead of a football club. They act as if we are Southampton who make a name for themselves by churning out young talents and selling them for a profit.

Its almost as if they think of these young players as their own children. Don't say mean words to them, and play nice or else it'll hurt their feelings and they'll throw a tantrum and stop performing.

It's probably gone too far the other way now, but anyone who was claiming that he was near world class was deluded beyond belief. His first season was frustrating and promising in equal measures (as you'd expect from any 19 year old in fairness), and he had some obvious areas he needed to improve. He looked like he might have jumped up a level in the games leading to his leg break, which I've acknowledged in the post you've quoted, but by the same measure it's not a huge sample size to judge him by.

I have that sinking feeling we will convince Pochetino to gives us Rose for Shaw and some doe. Then Pochetino will maximize his potential:(
I have this nightmare as well. Even worse if we need to give them cash as well. The Pochettino screw job. Gives us a worse player and then also manages to get us to give him say 20 mil.

I really don’t get this sudden operating of Rose. It’s like he has suddenly become Roberto Carlos the way people speak of him.

I can hardly remember him playing for United to be honest. He had those handful of games at the start of Van Gaal’s second season but otherwise he has been out of the picture for one reason or another. Even in those games, he looked promising but hardly Alves or Evra levels. After his disastrous first season at United, it was probably a case of people trying to find reasons we hadn’t wasted 30m rather than Shaw genuinely looking like a worldbeater.

He did look fantastic in that run of half a dozen games or so tbf. Although, as someone pointed out above, that included two CL games against opposition so inept that Memphis Depay looked like Messi on steroids.

1. This is not just an established star being eased back in and avoiding injury; this was his opportunity to shine - and he muffed it.
2. And he wasn't fit! Not for the first time, he's overweight - and this when under pressure. Oh, and just for fun, think about the fact that he returned at about the same time as Young.

So, your solution would be for Jose to give up on a few competitive games and lose them because we need to give an unfit LB with a poor attitude a chance to get back to fitness in the hope that he will hit heights that he's never hit before while also hoping he'll avoid injury - something he's also never done before - and all the while, risk being shellacked for the results? Play an unfit Shaw and United will lose / draw / struggle. Jose will then inevitably take flak for "playing an unfit player", "risking the poor kid's confidence" and "putting the club at risk of missing out on trophies". If Shaw gets injured, it will be about "he was premature in playing an unfit player". How could Jose win?

Oh and here's the final bit. Rooney was similar in this "needs a run of games" thing but here's the thing - he'd proven he was great at his peak! The difference was, even when playing himself back, Rooney's attitude could never be faulted. In the reserves game, given the magnitude it should have had for Shaw, he just didn't look like he gave a toss. Strolling and ambling while losing? Just not good enough. Get rid!
Muffed what exactly? You'd think these reserve games were the Champions League final.

Are you capable of making a point without heaping on the hyperbole and inventing weird scenarios? It is possible for a manager to reintegrate a player without starting them in every single game - see Wilshere at Arsenal, or Rose at Spurs - not that playing Shaw would involve forfeiting matches (wtf?), killing his confidence or us missing out on trophies. Apart from anything, I can't think of many times where Shaw has let us down in the first-team; he was shaky in the City and Watford games last season but they were blown massively out of proportion. Someone like Lindelöf on current form is far more damaging to our hopes of winning a game than Shaw's ever been. From your post you'd swear the alternative at left back was prime Roberto Carlos - the alternatives are a shot winger and a man afraid to go past the halfway line.

If Shaw's supposed attitude problems were anywhere near as bad as purported, do you not think Mourinho would've got rid in the summer? If not, why?

I like shaw but he is responsible for his downfall, after the injury he should have worked harder to be fitter and not fatter. Reeks of unprofessionalism from him.

Gotta wonder why we didn’t spend the Lindelof money on a new LB and promote Tuanzabe to cover at CB.

Shaw is done isn’t he. For whatever reason be it mental or physical he barely looks like a professional these days which is crazy given the potential he had.

The thing that grates about Luke Shaw is that we paid a then world record fee for a fullback to sign him. Luke Shaw should be a reminder to managers that in most cases we can get better players from abroad for cheaper prices. English players are in most cases overpriced or overrated or frequently both with the exception of Kane and Dele Alli. Using the same logic we would be absolutely mugs to pay 60m for Danny Rose when we could get Ghoulam or Gaya or Alex Sandro. We should stop overpaying for English 'talent'.

Sweeping Shaw for Rose it's then. Shaw seems to have made his mind already.

Shaw had so much to play for this season. Contract extension and a place in England's World Cup squad. Instead, he's an average player on a bottom of the table U-23 team. And that's no one's fault but his.

Mourinho will love Kieran Tierney's abilities and attitude. He's captain material. Hope he's at United in the first week of the January transfer window so we can put the Shaw saga behind us.

That broken leg didn't help and personally had a lot of sympathies for the guy. I also don't think that Mourinho's man management skills are always on the mark but there seems to be only one person here to blame.

Reached a point, where I'm struggling to see him as a professional footballer anymore. Not because he has no talent or skill, but absolutely no sign of any desire to fight for his place. Ironically, place where we don't have any real quality and could be his for 10+ years.

Shaw has only himself to blame if he couldn't nail down that position despite that being the least competitive position in squad.

Well if it’s the case he is gone then would rather not take Rose. That’s a pretty damming and obvious extract and well I think if he does go to Spurs by next season we will all be cursing the day he left.

I'll be honest, I've only seen him in a couple of games but a mate of mine who's a Celtic fan raves about him... ability and temperament. Trouble is looking good for Celtic is not necessarily a good indicator?

Just watched his compilation on YouTube. Looks like proper Manchester United fullback. Fearless and blistering pace. It will be interesting to see how he develops for sure.

Some funny quotes:

Body looks distorted. Top half looks short. Looked like a hobbit coming on to be honest

Just needs another 5 years?

This shit is literally Anderson mk.2.0 over here.

Regarding Anderson, I think he was better than Shaw. Anderson started off "okay". He then got better. He played a few good games. Then he fell to pieces. Shaw fell to pieces the day he joined us.

you just know that once we sell him he will go on to be one of the best LB in the league !

I doubt it, mate.
If he was genuinely a top LB, in 4 years, he'd have shone through. At present, his level seems to be around the U23s...which is disappointing.

If so, it's very baffling why we didn't go for a new LB in the summer. We could have got some decent money for him too.

Because the Glazers did not want to fork out money for a top LB.
Jose was desperate for Perisic. This was a not a secret. The only bid we made was for around 31 Million. When that was rejected, we offered nothing else. Inter would've sold for around £45M and for a decent LW, at his physical peak, this would've been good value.
Put simply, our board are not willing to spend the money and Jose is definitely frustrated.

Why is everyone so arsed about this? Shaw was never even good for us. A flop signing.

Because lot of people on caf believed even recently, that it was just a matter of time before Shaw plays well and his best performance of 4-5 matches 2 years back will be the norm.

And they were quick to write off the likes of Rojo and Fellaini, two players who show way more fight and had way better performances.

I reckon he wants to be back down south and more specifically London to be home again.

Probably an influencing factor together with what most suspect is a strong dislike of Mou, culminating in what appears to be a lack of real effort to get into the team.

Been crap for a while now. Under Van Gaal’s struggle while he was injured, the continuous overrating of his potential ability to turn things around for us was borderline mental. Looking like it’s best for both sides to move on.

Would hardly be surprising to learn that Poch is a better coach to young players than Jose. Mourinho wants you to behave like a model pro all the time - he just expects you to be motivated and doesn't feel it's his job to do so. Somewhat fair enough, but I can also see why that attitude doesn't work well with millenials who constantly need affirmations.

Huge shame and I'm sure he'll do well elsewhere. Enough time has been spent hoping, and Blind/Rojo/Young/Darmian starting is an absolute disaster for a team with title aspirations.

Yep. I think the £ plug was pulled this summer.

Didn’t do Fraiser Foster, VVD, Wanyama any harm in the last few seasons if they are an indicator.

Couldn’t agree more but this is hardly Jose’s fault. He’s on a budget no doubt but the players he has bought are now our best and most important outfield players and that’s a great sign (Lukaku Pogba Matic and Bailley) obviously Mykytarin and Lindelof have still to prove this. Where as Pep inherited KDB, Augero Sterling Silva x 2 Fernandos who are all main stays in his team just now!

We just need to get rid at this point, probably should have in the summer. I've had a feeling for a while that we'll go for Rose once he's proved his fitness - if Shaw can help us do that deal then great, otherwise we'll struggle to get any money for him.

To be fair Fellaini (who I’ve always backed) looked like a fish on a bike under Moyes (which given he had him at Everton was strange) but LVG used him well and Jose has him very dangerous. Rojo stunk the place out for a year before putting in a good albeit rash (could or should have had 2 reds in this run) a times run of form with Jones.
Fellaini and Rojo are good proven squad players for me just like Young at full back. Mata and Herrera also but nothing more.
