why has his progress getting back into match fitness been so slow?

He's lost so much game time and so is massively underdeveloped vis a vis his age and supposed talent.

Think I've lost all sympathy: he needs to prove himself, or should move onto a lower level for the sake of his own career.

Mourinho's man management, i.e. don't play him until his attitude's right. Given how that went at his last Chelsea spell and him falling out with half his players, it's a coin flip as to whether we'll ever see Shaw.

Should have given him at least a full half tonight. If he looked gassed and/or lethargic then we could have assumed its finished for him here due to inadequate motivation/ inability to get himself in shape. Giving him 5 mins doesn't answer the questions one way or the other - so what was the point ?

I think Shaw needs to think about his career, be brave and put in a transfer request.
Memphis was not prepared to be a benchwarmer. He believed this and told the manager that he wanted out.
It really depends on whether or not Shaw believes in his own ability. If not, then he'll accept playing in the reserves.

Funnily enough you could say the same about Shaw's fitness.

What an underwhelming end to his career, was buzzing when he first joined us. He's just gotten worse and worse over time here

He peaked just before his injury, he was incredible for a short period of his United career. Since then he’s pretty much done jack Schmidt.

Aye, looked a top player for those 8 games or so. Given how long he's been here that's just not enough for a club of our aspirations though.

This must surely be the end for him here? A fully controlled 2-0 display and he couldn't get more than five minutes.

It's very sad to see Shaw current situation and the worst part is I can't see any way out for him. He has really regressed a lot in his progress.

In contrast, he was one of the best left back in the league with potential to be one of the best in the world. He was very quick, strong, very good technically, good stamina, good injury records and with very good defending abilities. He was also very good in attack with good crosses, dribbles, passings and shots.

Only miracle can save his career at United now.

Think it’s pretty obvious the reason he didn’t play was due to Tuanzebe. Jose even said as much in his post match interview when he said he wanted Tuanzebe surrounded by experience. Same for Lindelof as he wasn’t in the best confidence.
Have to say I also think people are going over the top on the fat thing. He’s a big guy yes. Look at him just before he comes on he doesn’t look out of shape. When on the pitch next to the others he does look big but really I think he is just naturally big ala Lukaku. The boys chest is massive and he does have a huge arse. Muscle tho.

The question is would I trust Andersons Dietician take on size?:p

How much do you reckon he can squat?

Looking at him tonight I don't get the fat claims. He looked like any other player out there.

mark my words Luke Shaw will leave this club and there is every chance in year or 2 time everybody will be saying why did Mourinho let him go. This stuff about his attitude is a smoke screen Mourinho just don't like him simple as that. I could see Danny Rose coming here and Shaw going to Spurs and in years time he will be better then Rose. Also the stuff about his weight a load of rubbish it just his build lots of people of different body shapes.

What do these four managers have in common?

Pochettino. Hodgson. Van Gaal. Mourinho.

Answer - all have questioned Shaw's attitude at one time or another. Ergo, it's not a smoke screen.

Hell, even Shaw himself has admitted he has made mistakes.

Its a smoke screen if his attitude was that bad he wouldn't be even training with first team lets remember when Mourinho took over Shaw started as first choice he then had a bad game at Watford and was drop and as hardly played since. As for other Managers Pochettino used to treat Shaw like a son and that came from Jose Fonte and also if Pochettino thinks his attitude was that bad why is there also talk of him maybe going to Spurs. And LVG was an idiot so lets not go there.

This.

Try to get as much as possible for him.

Put a buy back clause.

He's not fecking fat. If we end up selling him I think we will regret it.

Why ? He clearly has no future here. We can't give him time and games to play and withstand his shite performance till he starts regaining form and fitness level, no big club can afford him that at the moment.

The best option is to sell him, let him go to a midtable club where he'll play often and let us buy a new shiny in form LB to cement this position instead of waiting for this kid to get it right at some point, which simply won't happen.

He should look for his future and us as well should care about ourselves only.

This forum always says this.

But how many players in the last 15 year's have we willingly let go that we have gone on to regret?

People were saying exactly the same thing when we let Schneidelin go. People had a complete meltdown when we let Welbeck go too.

People are still using his perfomances as an 18 year old to justify why we should keep him. It's just people being overly sentimental.

I think Shaw should go on loan for full season next summer, if not next January to get into the PL groove again, like what Zouma is doing now. Similar to Shaw, a (still) young with reputations to potentially become a very good player when they were still teenagers, but plagued by what seems like endless injuries, playing for the big clubs in EPL.

His contract runs out this Summer although we have the option to extend for a year.

Yup. Some of them are thin, some of them are fat.

Pogba is the best example but i agree with the post your replying to, that we will regret it if he's sold. There's a player in there no doubt, it just needs finding.

If Mourinho is this opposed to using him a January loan would make sense. It's madness to have a player like him losing value in the reserves while the likes of Young and Darmian are battling for a first team place.

Both Young and Darmian are getting their place in the team on merit. It's up to Luke Shaw to prove that he's an upgrade. Something he has singularly failed to do whenever he's had the chance, either for our first team or our U23s. If he can't do that, then not picking him isn't "madness" it's common sense.

Just needs another 5 years?

This shit is literally Anderson mk.2.0 over here.

It is possible that the reason we have seen so little of him is simply because he isn't very good.

I'm going to make a prediction that we will sign Danny Rose with Shaw going the other way. Think all parties will be fine with that.
