We need a new LB, it's a simple as that. IF Shaw can get back to his best then great, but right now he isn't and Jose clearly doesn't trust him/feel like he's making enough effort.

I'm at the end of my tether with Darmian, we desperately need to be looking at our options come January.

Unless we see some dramatic improvement by January, he needs to go. Otherwise we are getting into Anderson territory again. I am not optimistic.

Just saw a pic of him with the traveling squad to Benefica! Great news if he's integrated in the team as we need the bodies if we're going to be playing Wednesday-Saturday fixtures this often.

Why didn't we loan him out to get some first team football this season?

Expensive signing and high wage don't often go on loan unless there is an option to buy. It's understandable as for the wage paid, it maybe worth the same as taking punt buying some foreigner. Especially in this case, they don't have high expectation for a young player coming off a serious injury. Too much risk for the money.

As for us, we would try our best to work with him so we don't lose our investment.

Didn't expect that with him playing 90 mins on Sunday. Can't see him making the bench against Benfica but with us having the EFL Cup in a weeks time I guess he's being reintegrated to the squad ahead of that.

Or that's why he was not bursting his lung in the game?!

I meant since he was not in match day squad, AND IIRC Mourinho gave the squad a day rest in the week. Some players would find themselves in odd schedule given match day squad may have their rest the day after the game. IIRC Bailly last season also participate in a Sunday U23 game when he didn't make the matchday squad. The next game he was with the squad.

So the U23 maybe treated as conditioning training session for these first team players. They will have to attend first team gathering the next day and being in the traveling squad, so there is a valid reason, they wouldn't run themselves into ground in U23 game!

Almost sure he will play this game. Let's see how good will he handle the pressure of a CL game.
If he fails, end of the line. We have no space in the squad or time to wait for his improvement. It's been three seasons, for crying out loud.

I'm still not ready to bail on Shaw just yet. I want to see him get a run of games and I don't think I'll lose hope of him being our first choice LB until he's officially let go.

As expected José making it easy for his old friends from the capital.

So why is it taking him so long to get match fit? He seems to need months upon months just to get upto speed.

Must have been a wide angle lens.

Because he's completely out of shape and way overweight. I've never seen a United player in such bad shape - including Anderson. I understand different players have different body shapes but he looks in far worse shape than when LVG called him fat.

You cannot base anything on u23 games, its not competitive and very meaningless.

Shaw simply cannot be impressing Jose on the training ground, whether that's attitude, fitness or whatever...

The fact we play Young there, Darmian there, Blind there just highlights where we are at LB. Now all 3 can do a job there and will do they're best for the team, but Shaw is the ONLY natural LB and he is 4th choice.

I've been really vocal about not writing Shaw off and some of the comments here are extremely harsh. He's a talent, we paid 30mil for him when the market wasn't crazy by todays standard and he has the potential to be awesome BUT he isn't getting chances.

Think Jose just needs to give him a little run of games, then go from there. Only way he can be judged is by 1st team game time. Can't see Jose doing that however

You can if you're talking about a player coming back from constant injury/fitness struggles who, despite being here what, 4th year now?, couldn't cement his spot for a longer time period than of two months or so. Nevermind actually impressing during that time.

We aren't a charity organisation either. It's not that we'll be giving everybody 'a run of matches' so he can sort himself out. 'Sorting himself out' should be a bare minimum to expect from somebody who hasn't done jack's shit at this club for the last couple of years. It's not really the first match in the u23s where he seems to have been shit. Nevermind Jose not being the only guy to question his fitness.

Same here, but I've given up on him now. Something is not right here, he is the only LB at the club and he is 4th choice. We need to bring a LB as soon as January.
This point right here. He's done.

I doubt Shaw will get an IF this season.

This is the baffling part of this situation. If any other footballer is lacking form or fitness you figure it might take them maybe two or three weeks to get back into contention. Yet somehow with Shaw we've come to accept these geological time scales where it starts to sound reasonable that Shaw needs more than 7 or 8 months to work up to decent match fitness. And what happens when the summer break comes? Does he need 7 or 8 months of the 18/19 season to work up to first team level?

Funny observation.

He did need the entire first season, to improve his fitness level. He and LVG both agreed that he was not in shape to play a game for MUFC. It looks like the excuse is now "poor form".
Logically, if a player has had only 10 good games for his club, in 4 years, he needs to be let go and for the sake of his own career, I think he needs to look for a new club.
Sometimes in life, things just don't work out, no matter how hard you try and fight against it and this looks like one of those situations.

i think we should cut our losses. i'm sure with the inflation in the market, we can at least fetch 15 to 20M£ for him. we need a new left back as soon as january imo.

If he is always injured/unfit, what club will pay anything for him?
As with Rooney, because he has been next to useless in recent times, we may have to let him go on a free. Either that, or on a loan deal, with an option to sell, if the buying club is happy with his performance.

He is still very young, i'm sure that for a price as low as 15M£ we'll find a buyer quickly. it's nothing in the current market.

Yes, I watched the game specifically because I wanted to see how he is progressing. I have been one of those people who have defended him and are desperate for him to do well here but it is becoming impossible to defend him.

The West Ham players were just going right past him, he wasn't putting in any sort of challenges and he was running in slow motion. Maybe the worst of it was that when you have a player on the pitch who has over 90 Premier League appearances under his belt, you expect him to show some leadership especially when our defence was clearly inexperienced and struggling. He just looked disengaged.

Nice to see some sense from that camp. It's been like that for a long time now. I've been told i shouldn't procreate around here because i said he is shite one year ago. Don't think anyone over here did't want him to succeed, he just doesn't have a quality and we'll just have to admit it and sell him.

There's been criticism (from Scholes I think? Possibly Ferdinand) about the attitude and mindset of the players we've brought in in recent years. Luke Shaw seems to fit the mold, you could probably toss Darmian and Mkhi in there for good measure. But this in particular is just so disappointing. He was supposed to be the English Paddy Evra!!

I'm sure he'll get some chances between now and January. He just needs to take it. It's bit like the Phil Jones situation where he has the talent but the only thing stopping him was injuries (in Shaw's case, injuries and his mindset). Jones has so far seized his chance now it's up to Shaw to do the same.

Such a shit situation he’s a good player but for whatever reason seems to have completely given up. We have space at LB and it’s a World Cup year you’d think he would be doing all he can to impress....really weird situation.

Forgot about that.

If someone doesn't have the ability then there's nothing they can do about it but it's just bizarre to see someone who seems unable or unwilling to eat right and do the necessary work on his fitness to get in tip top physical shape when there are such obvious incentives to do so.

I'm actually a little wary about shitting on the guy too much because I'm starting to worry that it will come out at some point that he's struggling with his mental health. That would certainly explain why he finds it so hard to motivate himself.

Or could be a simple case of realizing that he is not going to make it here. So let it go till he is sold somewhere else and then try to be better.

That's still a shitty plan. Getting in the best possible shape will help him hit the ground running if/when he does go somewhere else.
Is Shaw friends with Memphis Depay?
Memphis was one strange guy who used to keep talking about becoming world's best player and his desire to be on top, but do nothing to achieve that. He seemed to be happy with new cars, stylish stuff, etc

They were best buddies  Memphis' form totally went to shit after Shaw broke his leg.

Some lads are cut out for certain sized clubs others not. Perhaps that's the case with Zaha and it's looking like that for Shaw unfortunately. Hopefully he can turn it around but I'm not overly optimistic. Shame because I would like to have as many English players as possible if the quality is there and a few years ago I thought he was nailed on as a key player for the national team for years to come.

@AP88 made a comparison to Michael Johnson the other day which seems a good shout. Hope for his sake his career doesn't go down that road.

To the comments above he was Memphis' best friend but in Shaw's time here I've not seen reports of him having a lavish lifestyle. If anything the argument was that he was spending too much time going south to visit his family or living with friends rather than on his own.

Just weird that in Jones' wedding photos Shaw looked so thin. Was he photoshopped loads or something? Doesn't make much sense.

I know! Loses weight to look sharp in a suit then puts it on during the season. Wtf?

He looked the same in preseason which was only a few weeks after so I don't know...

Thing is, looking at his photos on getty, he doesn't look that bad (scroll down to the ones of him v Burton) but seeing him on the TV etc, he does.

That face though... not once during preseason did it look like that.

That's not even him, isn't it?

It’s because these photo’s don’t show his gigantic arse, which we have the pleasure of witnessing when we watch a live football match. As soon as we see his side profile when playing he looks 120kg heavier.
