Louis Van Gaal - First press conference 17/07/14 14:45 BST

It will improve a lot in the coming two weeks, not much on accent though, but on vocubulary and grammar. He comes in fresh from the Dutch team, with a foreign language it always takes a few days to get the words from the back of your head to the front, closer to the mouth.

Van Gaal doesn't do positions in the club, he only does positions on the pitch and on the bench. My guess is that Rooney will accept that and earn a position in the starting 11 on his own merit.

Thought he came across well and I'm sure his vocabulary and ability to better express himself will improve during his time here.

His remarks with the last question regarding Rooney was very telling and seemed to confirm what a lot of us had predicted regarding Rooney's position in the club under LVG.

Also: his German and Spanish were actually never as good as his English is already (although you could argue that his German improved and was comparable to his English right now). Didn't stop him from winning titles at Barca and Bayern, so I don't care at all.

He doesn't exactly need to assess the midfield does he? What that needs is obvious. Considering United is the team that needs the most strengthening and are currently now the weaker than even last season, wasting another month or so to "assess", then being close to the end of the transfer window, after which a hard to get player will be pursued, meaning a long drawn out saga is not ideal.
The best thing would be for him to have gotten all the transfers done before the new season, so they've all bedded in, at this rate it looks like the season will start as Herrara being the only good midfielder. LVG's first few games are easy, but that scenario is not ideal at all. Bizarre imo :wenger:

Sure he does, kids are now an option.....

No it doesn't, nor does it surprise me that Herrera and Shaw were from targets presented from our existing scouting list (which we know pre-dates Moyes since he was pointed towards Herrera last summer).

Van Gaal isn't a signings manager, as such. Yes, first time around at Barcelona he signed a lot of Dutchmen but that was probably because a) those Dutchmen had got to two European Cup finals on the trot, winning the first b) it was his first job outside of Ajax and he wanted familiar faces around. If you look at what he did at AZ, at Bayern, even at Barca second time around a lot of his success came from developing players. Also, Van Gaal has tended to favour youngsters who he can indoctrinate into his philosophy throughout the last decade. When you sign a big name superstar who is used to doing things a certain way it can be harder to get them to wholesale buy into the Van Gaal philosophy. I'm sure Van Gaal is principally looking to see who in the squad can play his way.

That's not the direction I'd like United to take in the next few years. A long, rough road with no certainty that we ever get where we want to go. We need to use our financial power to build a nice smooth ten-lane super-highway. Buy our way to success. Like Real and Bayern and City and Chelsea. It works.

I don't want us to become a project in which Van Gaal tries to prove that his idiosyncratic methods bring long term success. We're vulnerable to that because of the lack of football gravitas at the club as a counterweight to the manager. Our short, bald accountant isn't going to have much to say on football matters.

If Van Gaal wanted to go forward without spending much money, he'd be the wrong manager for United at this time. Hopefully that's not the case, and we see a few big signings before the window closes. It's a bit like a sale though - the best bargains go early. Come late to the party and you're getting the stuff others didn't want.

Gotta say that I'm excited after watching his interview.

I just like the way he talks and his analytical style... Also love the way he doesn't take shit from the press.....

Not saying everything's great, but I'm just looking forward to seeing how things are going to pan out... Also looking forward to seeing him turf out some deadwood...

From the Glazer's perspective he'd be the best sort of manager because I doubt, despite their investments this summer, they are keen to spend big. They would prefer success on the cheap and looking at Van Gaal's record it wouldn't be a bad shout to think he can deliver that. He got quick success at Ajax, Barcelona, AZ and Bayern and it mainly broke down because his players started to think there was more to life than his methods. However, that may be a result of the continental system. At United where the manager's word has been law for decades Van Gaal might find it easier to exert the level of control he likes and his relationship with the players may not sour as it did elsewhere.

the last sentence was harsh "there arent many experienced players, sorry" and he ment personality wise. maybe he is right though

Regarding Rooney, I am just excited that this manager will likely be asking him to prove himself to get selected like everybody else. From today onwards, the only ego around is the boss' and players have to earn their spots. It is loud and clear and together they achieve bigger things. I have a feeling his man management skill will come in handy. "The challenge is always 1st place, not 4th place". Love the boss.

Not sure if serious? Because out of those mentioned, Bayern (and United) have spent the least. Real Madrid went 13 years without a Champions League final with al their spending ffs. And where's City in Europe after spending a billion(!) pounds? We still won more leagues than Chelsea I think, without any ridiculous spending.

Anyway don't be so insecure man. If anything, Van Gaals approach has shown time and time again to be way more successful on the long term than just mindless buying. So like I said, not sure if you were trolling. Louis van Gaal would explode if he'd read your post

I find it hard to believe most of you have glossed over the "commercial bit" in his interview. He laid emphasis on that. He said sometimes dommercial and football success both are difficult to achieve. I wonder what he means by that. He also said commercially we are the biggest club, but if you finish 7 th you are not the biggest. Sporting part is important too. Again something aint right, i cant put my finger on it.

I think him saying he will buy a player after assessing the squad is pre meditated bull shit. Just like it was with moyes and signing best players in the world. We have been burned and embarrassed in the transfer market, i dont think we want that to happen. Cards firmly closed to the chest. I think lou macari said we could sign players early, i think van gaal also said he gave the list of targets he wants already to edward. We are either saving face/ keeping deals secret/have no money(doing an arsenal).

I think if his English is more proficient, he would have used words like "Mature in personality" not just "mature in age". The "experience" he referred to is obviously referring to a player's own character and materiality (and hence leadership). He stressed that the captain in a team is very very important. And I can't agree more.

He went to a monastry for several weekst to freshen up the little German he knew and learn a lot more to communicate better with the German players. Obviously he's not extremely talented in foreign languages, but it would be nice for the fans if he could express his idea's a bit better. It will improve on the short term because that's how it works. Be among native speakers and all the once learned words will come back.

Just saw his MUTV sit-down interview. "We win together and we lose together". Class.

About the commercial side of things and LVG's comments: I think he meant that in an ideal world, he would love to just stay at Carrington for the next weeks and start preparing for the Swansea home game already. But obviously we're going on tour, he doesn't mind that and understands we need the sponsoring, but he's already come in late, so it's just not ideal - nothing more.

Or even more simply put: if you take over at a club that just finished 7th, would it be wise to bring in a new manager who only has a short amount of time to prepare the squad? I don't think so, but no one can help LVG was at the world cup. Wouldn't be wise to go to America for weeks either, if you just installed 3 million pounds worth of new pitches and have a beautiful training complex like Carrington. But we need to money from the sponsoring, that's why we go on tour. Obviously staying in England would be way better.

All sounds good.

Not giving anything away transfer wise and is giving the players here hope. Better than Dithering Dave's, "you need 5 or 6 world class players to win the CL" stupidity.

His answer to how he sees the club doing this season and saying he doesn't know until he sees how well the players take on board his philosophy is fair. Nice he said he aims for first and not fourth.

Loved his comments about experience. I totally agree. I'd rather have a young hungry player than a jaded experienced player filled with self entitlement.

The commercial comments were interesting. I don't think he likes that side of the club. The pre season tour is a pest to him.

All in all it felt very United.

What's he saying?

Every time they are talking he just turns the subject back to Moyes and how awful it all was and that LVG is a proper manager and we should have no worries now, unlike last summer when the awful Moyes was in charge.

It was a strange comment I thought as he's been at massive clubs like Barca and Bayern and surely he knows how important the brand of the club is. Maybe this is just on another level to anything he's ever seen before. I do think he would like to just train them at Carrington for 2 weeks instead of travelling to US.

Are you Dutch and did you watch the same RTL Late night episode which featured LVG and Cesar Milano the dog whisperer?

Because after dinner I will watch it back, would swear he said that about a list, now I'm starting to doubt myself. But if you watched the same show as I did and he didn't say it, it would save me some time watching back, if you still get what I'm saying.
no i didnt...( a dog whisperer what???).... im lost... and no im not dutch..... but please watch it back and let me know, would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know what Sir Bobby said to him just before the presser? It's obvious their mics were still on and he said something to him to which Van Gaal seemed a little baffled. I initially thought he was telling him "don't lose your temper"

Noticed that as well. Penny for his thoughts.

As squad players, maybe. First teamers, no. Though, I keep up with the youth team, I'm not up to par, who in the youth setup is good enough to be a starter? Probably none. So like I said, we need starters, and in terms of that, there isn't much assessing to be done.

Yeah but don't forget he's talking about personality and it would be hard to be too dismissive if one or two impress

Just watched the interview. That Rooney question at the end, one of the best answers for "experience" I've heard. You can tell why he has such a strong reputation at bringing through the young guns.

Its a bit cliche now people like you keep reminding us he needs to prove himself elsewhere. He doesn't.

He does. This whole thing reeks of romanticism. We can't have another season like last

I really hope he was kidding about the no signings for a month until he's assessed the squad. That'll be disastrous. I hope we haven't been sat with our thumbs up our arses while our rivals have been busy strengthening. I know we have Shaw and Herrera in, but our squad lags badly behind City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

I think that was said for the benefit of the squad rather than it being accurate. It would not send out a good message to them if on his second day he came out and said "More players? Have you seen those guys out there? I'm going to be balls deep in the transfer market this summer I want to win."

I hope so, I really do. It's hard to retain a positive mindset after last summer's fiasco.

Did very well in his first press conference. He's not going to tolerate any nonsense from the journalists that's for sure.

5 minutes with our current lot will cause a sudden hurry in the transfer market lol now with Carrick out we have Herrera and that's it, the other cms aren't good enough.

Sure it was reported he gave Ed a list of players he wants, and player that can leave weeks ago, I would have though we won't here alot whilst the tour is going on but loads will be been done behind the scenes, then when they are back the exodus will begin, with deals already set up, and then hopefully we'll get LvG's targets through the door, so 3 weeks is a fair bet IMO before alot happens.
