Louis Van Gaal - First press conference 17/07/14 14:45 BST

Jesus Christ

I love how he is so humble "Dreams of Van Gaal" "An honour to be introduced with Sir Bobby Charlton"

And yet, basically says "Yes I'm the boss. Who wants to touch me?...I SAID WHO WANTS TO F**KING TOUCH ME???"

We'll be fine with him in time :)

From the Glazer's perspective he'd be the best sort of manager because I doubt, despite their investments this summer, they are keen to spend big. They would prefer success on the cheap and looking at Van Gaal's record it wouldn't be a bad shout to think he can deliver that. He got quick success at Ajax, Barcelona, AZ and Bayern and it mainly broke down because his players started to think there was more to life than his methods. However, that may be a result of the continental system. At United where the manager's word has been law for decades Van Gaal might find it easier to exert the level of control he likes and his relationship with the players may not sour as it did elsewhere.

What a daft thing to say, sacking moyes and his compensation

Fellaini, Mata, Shaw, Herrera, that's like 120M altogether...

Very impressive presser.

The most impressive bit was when he suggested current players will be given a chance and that he's (paraphrasing) he's interested in them as people rather than just footballers.

Sounds like he is a transfer muppets worst nightmare.

With his "3-4 weeks to judge the players he has got" remark, he does a couple of things

I just worry the substandard players will stay at the club forever. They underperform so the manager is sacked. New manager comes in and needs time to evaluate so they aren't sold. Poor play continues, manager sacked. New manager, period of evaluation. Next thing you know it's 2017 and Ashley Young is still starting.

I would not read to much into the 3-4 weeks comment. It gives everyone at the club already to perform, and nail down a place. No motivation if he comes in and says "we're looking at buying 4/5 players". Plus it avoids media attention being put on him and who he'll buy.

If the players aren't sold under LvG, it will be because he believes they can make his system work. We as fans tend to get stuck in transfer muppet logic of "selling the dead wood", where managers look at players as components of a system they want to deploy. If a player can make LvG's system work, they should stay at United, irrespective of whether its Ashley Young, Anderson, Cleverley, or any of common players most would like sold. Not saying those should stay, but the concept of system over individual parts seems to be what LvG is thinking.

LVG knows what players this club needs. He also knows what current players will fit his philosophy and he also knows who needs to go. That 3-4 weeks comment is just showing respect to the club and its players.

I agree entirely...However, there is no way Anderson will be here come September.

Otherwise, I agree :D

Decent first press conference, nothing particularly great or bad really. Not sure I like the idea of him waiting a month before he works out who needs to stay/go and bring players in though. Hopefully he is just saying that one for the camera’s and has a decent idea already.

I don't really read too much into the comment that he needs a month to assess and evaluate the squad. It seems more like smoke and mirror to obscure any transfer activities and also to give players a kick up the ass.

This is the man who told Riquelme that he wasn't needed shortly after joining Barcelona.

I'm hoping that is the case

Just look at this magnificent beast

He literally screams "Haha puny Mancs...This is my club now. Piss off"

In other news, Moyes was playing Golf today, telling people how Rory McIlroy is someone to watch.....You could not make it up

I couldn't understand why he said "how important the sponsors are". Did he meant to say the supporters or did he find something irritating because he made another reference to the commercial side of things later on in the interview.

Just look at the pic in the post above yours. The seat cover has been raised to show the chevrolet logo.
Sponsors are everywhere. There is no way for him not to notice.

Don't think he'll enjoy that too much

Yeah, ours is an ideal club for him in most respects as we give more control to the managers then the likes of Bayern and Barcelona, so if he finds anything unpleasing it will be the whoring about of the club for sponsors, not that it will be very different at any of the other top clubs but I imagine we're the ones who are the most responsive to sponsors seeing how they flock to us.

Agreed and like SAF prefers to do his transfer business privately no doubt. Unlike the last manager who used the lack of transfers as a safety net for future improvement and would state it in press conferences when results were bad. Which was the same as saying that a side who had just won the premiership were suddenly poor.

I think that was said for the benefit of the squad rather than it being accurate. It would not send out a good message to them if on his second day he came out and said "More players? Have you seen those guys out there? I'm going to be balls deep in the transfer market this summer I want to win."
Good point. The message to the players from both video's is that everybody has a fighting chance en no player has priveliges. He did the same with the Netherlands team. Both mind and eyes wide open, maybe that's the democratic part. In one of the first matches with the Netherlands he picked Martins Indi, it was a clear message to any Dutch talented youngster: If you develop well the next two years, you can play in a WC. It was also a message to the big names, move up a gear, because you'll have to play with players like BMI, and you might also be dumped for a young but not that impressive talent. Reshuffle the deck, shake up the pillows, here on the training ground you can decide your future. That's a challenge most players respond to because it's at the core of what both professional and amateur footballers do: show what you can do and show what you can learn.

Another reason will be that he might reschool some players for a different position, but part of the message is that he wants to hurry. Because if it takes till december before he gets his style of play working, things will get difficult and many points will be lost already. When he started at Ajax, it took him almost half a season before it became clear what his game was all about, the fans shouted for him to be sacked. He learned to work faster, which was needed in Bayern and The Netherlands, but it still takes time because players have to learn a lot. Yesterday he made it clear to the players that they have to make an effort to make his philosophy their own quickly.

But there's also a reason in his one of his weaknesses. His eye for players and their (hidden) qualities works much better on the training ground than through a camera. If he can work with a player he sees a lot, but he's not that succesfull when it comes to buying players.

The man doesn't mess about, does he? He's making strong decisive decisions quickly. Oh the joys of having a manager who knows he's good enough!

It was always going to be different though. To an coach like Moyes who isn't experienced at the big clubs he was always going to be a deer in the headlights. To somebody like LVG who has been at the big clubs since his 40's he will always be comfortable.

Even for him who apparently doesn't like talking to the media, he talks eloquently and isn't embarrassed. I noticed he didn't even frail when he got a few words wrong, just took it on the chin and carried on.

Hedges, potentially. Agriculturally, farmers use windbreak hedges in big open fields to reduce wind speeds for the sake of crop growth. Same principle, whether it'll be a hedge or fence of sorts, I don't know, but that's what I imagine they have in mind

Some trees maybe ? Entice Scholes back into the fold.

About the commercial side of things and LVG's comments: I think he meant that in an ideal world, he would love to just stay at Carrington for the next weeks and start preparing for the Swansea home game already. But obviously we're going on tour, he doesn't mind that and understands we need the sponsoring, but he's already come in late, so it's just not ideal - nothing more.

Or even more simply put: if you take over at a club that just finished 7th, would it be wise to bring in a new manager who only has a short amount of time to prepare the squad? I don't think so, but no one can help LVG was at the world cup. Wouldn't be wise to go to America for weeks either, if you just installed 3 million pounds worth of new pitches and have a beautiful training complex like Carrington. But we need to money from the sponsoring, that's why we go on tour. Obviously staying in England would be way better.
This is spot on to me. Usually clubs like Bayern train at home base as their preseason. There's not really been a concept of travelling for a preseason tour. I think they are now changing this but I believe at the time van Gaal was there, the expectation was to work with the players at home training ground and have preseason games in Germany.

Different expectations

I keep seeing headlines which claim LvG has 'warned' the squad that they have 3 weeks to 'fight' for their futures. I'm sorry, but I heard him being asked about further transfers and him saying he wanted to look at the existing players for 3 or 4 weeks before deciding on any other transfers.

Did anyone hear anything different?
