Louis Van Gaal - First press conference 17/07/14 14:45 BST

I keep seeing headlines which claim LvG has 'warned' the squad that they have 3 weeks to 'fight' for their futures. I'm sorry, but I heard him being asked about further transfers and him saying he wanted to look at the existing players for 3 or 4 weeks before deciding on any other transfers.

Did anyone hear anything different?
It's an excellent case study in manipulation and shows why it's worth taking anything you read with a massive pinch of salt.

I think he's come across very well!

Loved the question about the holiday and he goes off on one then goes, "What was the question again?"

‘I know all the players how they have played football, but that’s under the direction of Moyes, Ferguson or Hodgson.

‘I want to see how they perform my philosophy. We need training sessions. We will wait a month and see if we buy another player.'

I understand that as a nicer way of saying you have 1 month to fit into my system and if you don't you will be replaced.

Will the Moyes bashing party ever end

I hope not. The shit we put up with last year, I thoroughly enjoy reminding myself how much better off we are now that dark cloud has shifted.

I agree with this opinion

When he insults us I just laugh "Class of 92, embarrassing", well what have Newcastle produced for the last 30 years?

Apart from that, he's right about Louis. I also don't think Fergie was doing anything to overshadow people as such. His budget's gotten bigger hasn't it!

Yeah I meant the stuff about LVG, he was talking bollox about our academy, weve produced countless players since then

I find the class of 92 embarrassing..

Granted, some great players came from that set up but, the wonderful talents that are erased is sickening...Keith Gillespie had all the talent in the world but is airbrushed out of it....All the while, Phil "I had a good game against Veira" Neville is revered because of it, as Denis Irwin is also put aside

Sickening!

Phil Neville sort of doesn't fit in amongst Scholes, Giggs even Gary Neville.

So what were the mean reasons for the people who voted negatively in the press conference poll? The Black Pearl was among them
I think a lot of people are getting carried away with van Gaal and underestimate the magnitude of the job he has on his hands. I can understand the giddiness as the man is a complete contrast to the dull serving we had last season. I'd still remain cautious.

Probably his comment about the commercial side of things, which to be fair, until you are in the middle of it there is probably nothing that would prepare a manager, even one as accomplished as LvG, for such an operation that Man Utd is. But theres no way you can compare that press conference to the deer in the headlights show we were treated too last year.

Denis Irwin?? Irwin was a first team regular before these lads showed up and was bought from Oldham in 1990

It isn't embarrassing, the name is pretty stupid. What have Newcastle got that is equivalent to our Busby Babes and the Class of 92? I can't comment on Gillespie I am too young to remember him, I assume he was not successful. Even those who came after were miles better than anything newcastle produced, they haven't had a successful academy player in ages that I know of.

In terms of Denis Irwin....He was our full time left back and one of the greatest left backs I've ever seen....In fact, one of the best defenders this club ever had....And yet, with the class of 92 propaganda in full swing, Denis is brushed out and apparently Phil Neville was our full time reliable left back....Which he was not and his overpraise annoys me as he was nothing but a second thought half the time...His best match was against Arsenal in 2002....It took Keane, Butt, Beckham and Quinton bloody Fortune for him to even be selected for that game.

Keith Gillespie....Looked like another Kan Kan...He had all the makings of a magnificent winger...He went to Newcastle and pissed it all away sadly....But Fergie had a massive soft spot for the guy...To the point where we almost bought him back and Fergie was constantly in contact with his mother to make sure he was ok.....In every fanzine and official magazine at the time, he was talked about as the next big thing.

He's forgotten about now..

Makes me sick in a way to be honest

He won't be overwhelmed by the magnitude of the job, just start working and keep working, and it will only take a bit longer than a small job. How big you think the Bayern job was? He had to change this monumental club from a buying counterattacking CL-failure to a youth oriented attacking machine that had a go for the biggest of prizes. It took him half a year to do the biggest part.

My worry is that half a year is a very long time for supporters, players and directors, especially with the expectations rising high. It can be very unsettling to watch a philosophy not working yet. If the board than only gives the impression they will give an inch, impatient supporters, media and unsatisfied players will start pushing for a change. To those who are making up chants, don't overlook the works of Tammy Wynette.

Not too sure what the point you are making is. Phil Neville had many more big games than that arsenal match. He used to be what Park became and Fergie loved him for the bigger or harder away games. He was a valuable utility player.

Gillespie as you say pissed his career away, that's his fault. Phil was a model pro. I know who I remember more fondly.

Irwin is often talked about as our best full back of the Fergie era. When people do all time PL sides, Irwin always is in contention against Ashley Cole as best left back.

I think any manager with the experience of LVG should be expected to be successful with utd, minimum is top 4. If he fails to achieve that I would be severely disappointed.

You would expect, yeah. But don't forget he was sacked at both Barcelona and Bayern for poor league positions, no manager can guarantee success.

I don't get why you people go on and on about this.... You probably have a misconception of what "class of such and such" means! If you know, you wouldn't be criticising the way you did.

Denis Irwin does not belong to the 'class' because he was not through the academy from the age of 12-13 like Giggsy, Becks, Scholes, Butt and the Neville brothers. And Denis Irwin was and still is a very respectable member of the United family. His loyal fans are probably more than the total of the class of 92 combined (well not quite but you know what I meant! No one dislikes Irwin. Period)

When these players were mentioned collectively, they are the class of 92, when its the time when they 'graduated" and excelled (from as school boys within the United Academy system). They famously helped the club win trophies in defiance of the infamous reference "you can't win with kids". That's how powerful these youngsters have become. The rest of the team contributed but they were not from the academy (or not as important players in comparison) hence were not referred to as such.

These players also carried on to make the club more and more successful for a very long time and were involved in the treble year....

Don't know what the fuss is all about.

You miss understand....I know Irwin was not part of the class of 92...I know what the class of 92 is...I'm not stupid.

My point is, the club have basically labelled Phil Neville as the ever dependable left back behind Giggs throughout the 90's and up until he left....Even Beckham said it at the end of the season awards....But yet, one of the greatest full backs this club ever had is thrown aside?!

You got it all wrong! The club has done nothing of that sort. Everybody, I meant absolutely everybody know Phil Neville tagged along cos he's a Neville.

Who threw aside the greatest full backs the club ever had? Who? As I said previously all fans adore Irwin and he's held one of hishest regard by the club to this day and is a great ambassador of the club taking trophy around the world meeting fans. Get your fact right please mate :)

Oh come on now man....That class of 92 film built Phil up (then knocked himself back down with some of the things he said)
And then throw in what Beckham said, it was ridiculous.

I'm not trying to bad mouth Neville here but, it's very frustrating that Denis Irwin's contribution was ignored last year so Phil Neville could be glorified as part of the "class of 92"

Surely you can see how it would annoy someone....Specially since Irwin was one of my favourite players

Myself and every United fan I know personally knows that Irwin was the greatest LB the club has ever had, no-one should be getting annoyed at this tbh.

Fact of matter is everybody knows the place of Phil and the place of Irwin within the club, around the world, amongst fans or non fans, no one will say (not the club of all people) Phil is > than Irwin. You have to be living under the rock all these years not to be aware of that. :)

True....But that Beckham quote sticks in the throat somewhat for me
