Louis Van Gaal - First press conference 17/07/14 14:45 BST

He's such a commanding presence. I love him already. He just comes across as someone you can have faith in to get it right even if there are a few shaky periods along the way.

Makes total sense, Giggs will have given him the lowdown on the shite in the squad and I'm sure the targets are lined up, but he want's to see for himself. Also good he's good some of the youngsters training with the first team too.

Makes sense from that perspective. But we'd have possibly lost targets till then and end up overpaying or just not able to find the required quality.

It's not like Levy or Redknapp we can sign anyone that seems a bargain late on.

Seems like he really wants to wait and assess his squad another month before deciding whether to buy or not. Interesting but understandable.
Well, he said in the presser that he knows the players, but he doesn't know the players trained by van Gaal.

i doubt Rooney will become captain, i reckon his comment about his squads human side means a new player will be his captain, VIDAL, hummels???

Yep and I'm quite excited by that tbh. Will be interesting to see what changes he wants to make and what youth players he wants to give a chance.

Very impressive press conference.

Dominant, deliberate and assertive as you would expect, but not a complete dictatorial figure as some would have you believe. His man-management will be very good and I don't expect him to clash with many if any personalities during his tenure.

Understand they don't want to rock the boat for his first press conference but what a boring set of questions from the journos. Making him repeat the same old shit, would've liked to have heard some stuff on specific players as well.
What will you expect to hear answers of specific questions though? It's his first few days and he has not even met all players. He already categorically mentioned he needed to look at them in the coming few weeks to see how they play with his philosophy. If they asked specifically, they would never ever get specific answers. Besides, I have a feeling they were briefed beforehand. That's how a first conference should be like. It's a meet-and-greet kind of occasion.

Speaking on the importance of Giggs in teaching him the culture and feels he can become a great manager.
I honestly don't get this will or determination to have Giggs as a future manager. He needs to prove himself elsewhere before this job. In his interviews he never came across as particularly astute tactically, he was spouting a lot of clichés, someone who is comparable like Guardiola always spoke of his philosophy towards the game in detail.

I'm genuinely worried. Waiting a month before buying sounds crazy to me and smacks of us making the same mistakes as last year.

I don't care how good of a manager LvG, it only gets you so far - I expect he will do better but I was hoping that we would kick on / get some players in a bit earlier and raise the quality of the squad.

I'm hoping this is a bluff, I really am.

'For me the biggest challenge is to come first. Not fourth'.

That says everything I wanted to hear.

Looked very self assured. His English was disjointed but that will improve with time. Very impressed.

He doesn't exactly need to assess the midfield does he? What that needs is obvious. Considering United is the team that needs the most strengthening and are currently now the weaker than even last season, wasting another month or so to "assess", then being close to the end of the transfer window, after which a hard to get player will be pursued, meaning a long drawn out saga is not ideal.
The best thing would be for him to have gotten all the transfers done before the new season, so they've all bedded in, at this rate it looks like the season will start as Herrara being the only good midfielder. LVG's first few games are easy, but that scenario is not ideal at all. Bizarre imo :wenger:

We finally have a use for Fellaini and Anderson, as some sort of human wind shield.

Fellaini always did remind me of one of these things.

What sets him apart from all other foreign managers coming to England is: He's here to make a mark, but not for money.

His gesture in matching United's donation of the agent fee they saved to charity of his choice is class. He knows his duty to the underprivileged and the world is better because of that.

Watching Herrera's interview it really does make me wonder what the players did in training under Moyes.

"that's always the question and I have explained this already"

Death stare...... question over. Love this manager.

I think a lot are here to make their mark. They all get well paid. Some are mercenaries like Sven but most want to win stuff.

Love the fact he understands his philosophy and wants his players to play HIS way and if they dont he will find someone, cant wait for this season

How would he know? He wasn't there when Moyes was.

The day he was appointed Manchester United manager, I heard Louis van Gaal say live on TV. that he had given a list to Edward Woodward, with potential signings.

So chill out peeps, he's got his plans and he might not be entirely honest if he says he wants to ONLY asses the squad. He wants to look at what we've got, and if a player comes available he thinks we need, we'll go for him. Doesn't have to take weeks, obviously he's not gonna make the media any wiser than they are, plus the transfer world is a very difficult world.

I don't want to make this into a transfer thread, I really don't but is anybody a little surprised about the "wait a month to sign players" comment?

It would mean leaving signings (IMO we need 3 of a very high standard) until the last 2 weeks. A lot of very good players can transfer elsewhere or decide to stay put by then. And may leave ourselves fighting the clock.
