Louis Van Gaal - First press conference 17/07/14 14:45 BST

He does. This whole thing reeks of romanticism. We can't have another season like last
Well you're wrong. The season like last was due to Moyes and Giggs is not moyes. Which part of this you don't get?

Did very well in his first press conference. He's not going to tolerate any nonsense from the journalists that's for sure.
And he came across a clever person. He knows when to be humble ("it will be difficult") and when to sound confident yet not arrogant ("the challenge is always 1sy place, not four").... Too many to quote here

I find it hard to believe most of you have glossed over the "commercial bit" in his interview. He laid emphasis on that. He said sometimes dommercial and football success both are difficult to achieve. I wonder what he means by that. He also said commercially we are the biggest club, but if you finish 7 th you are not the biggest. Sporting part is important too. Again something aint right, i cant put my finger on it.

I picked up on that too. I think it's a bit of a worry. He is known for a strong personality and for falling out with club administration. To me it looks like he doesn't like "commercial interests" influencing his decisions. The trip to the USA is obviously not optimal for him, maybe there is some pressure to keep certain players, because of non-football reasons.

4 weeks to check out the squad before making any more additions means that we will only have from the 18th to the 31st of August to make any signings if he really means it.

I doubt that last bit. SAF wouldn't have stood for it and even Moyes would have leaked it all over. United's brand is not dependent on any player anyway.

I think he probably doesn't think the pre season is optimal plus their are plannings and commitments regarding the tour and the commercial stuff there which will happen which he might not like particularly. As in some players having to come early than he wanted or him having to do sponsor related stuff himself or the players who have to do some event or the other in different groups on tour with days off from training.

I doubt he has been involved in this type of pre season preparations at any of his previous clubs to this scale.

But also Moyes had proved himself elsewhere. You could spin it either way.

All we need now is for LVG to come out in a flying carpet and sing 'I can show you the world'. We'd all fall for it and he'd be an instant legend.

Very impressive press conference.

Dominant, deliberate and assertive as you would expect, but not a complete dictatorial figure as some would have you believe. His man-management will be very good and I don't expect him to clash with many if any personalities during his tenure.

He will. He will clash with those he wants to have out of the club as he will tell it to them face to face. Some may think that it is hard like this - but it is better to tell the truth as to give hope when there is none.

He doesn't really make himself justice with his problems with the English language so expect these interviews to get better and better as he gets more comfortable and understands the questions better. Sometimes he seems to slur away as he is trying to translate his mind from Dutch to English, will be great to see him more fluid later.

I think him saying he will buy a player after assessing the squad is pre meditated bull shit...

Ditto to both. Also probably worth adding that he mentioned it twice - first time he just dropped it.

Regarding the bolded bit, there's a certain bit of charm about him behaving exactly as advertised from day one.

Just watched his interview on youtube. The man is class, understands the philosophy of the club, is well aware of commercial implications that his work will yield and wants his players not to be just wonderful footballers, but real human beings as well. Exciting times ahead.

The commercial aspects of the club leave a bitter taste in my mouth. Unfortunately that is the way the game is these days. Look at Barca with their sleeve promotional stickers. I think he was referring to the present season tour more than anything. It's a terrible idea when the club is just bedding in with a new manager. But it's essential to play big clubs and get that extra cash in.

Disappointed by the 4 week plan to assess signings but I am sure giggs has been in his ear saying we need reinforcements in midfield, he knows it. LVG is a very very good manager he will pick up on the weaknesses in the squad quickly.

Haven't seen the press conference, but for me, what he said was never going to be as important as they way he said it. Having looked through the reactions in this thread, I think it's safe to say he was confident and in control, which is exactly what I was hoping for.

Such a contrast to Moyes. Anyone remember his embarrassing first day, with the stupid mouse mat and his awkward Ashley Young moment.

.

He's right though. Some might not like it, but the only reason we're the biggest club is our commercial marketability. Even disregarding the 7th bit, we lag behind several others in historical sporting success.

He was asked in what way he considers us the biggest, and gave the truthful answer.

I agree the fact he brought the commercial responsibilities up twice seems to point to him not loving it.

The tour doesn't need to be a bad thing. I reckon it would be a good time for him to get to know the players as people as well as players.

5 minutes with our current lot will cause a sudden hurry in the transfer market lol now with Carrick out we have Herrera and that's it, the other cms aren't good enough.

I'm sure he means it when he says it's a fresh start, too. Will be really interesting to see who impresses over the next month. Wouldn't be all that shocked to even see someone like Anderson or Ashley Young defy everyone's expectations and end up sticking around this season after impressing.

More likely, though, he realizes that it's a genuinely tough call figuring out what to do with Rooney and Mata, positionally, and whether or not he rates Hernandez and/or Welbeck, which of Young, Valencia, Nani, Zaha or Lingard should be kept, if one of Anderson, Cleverley or Fellaini should be kept around since we need the depth, if Shaw (just listed because of Alaba and Schweinsteiger under LVG), Valencia or Welbeck or another player should be converted to the midfield to help with our problem there, if the CB's are good enough to allow for a risker signing like Vermaelen or a youngster, or if we need to go and try to buy an immediate starter like Benatia, Varane or Hummels, and if we can't get a star like that (very likely) is our need so bad that we should overpay for a 2nd tier talent.

A ton of stuff to figure out. A month of training and friendlies doesn't seem like a ton of time, and still leaves us 10 days or so to get any more transfers done.

There was some emphasis to it, he brought it up in his first answer I think and then his penultimate one again. The club is run in a commercial way, and then alluding to the possibility football and business interests may not always be aligned. Cryptic.

Well at least that proves Shaw and Herrera weren't his signings.

We have no idea who LVG wants and needs yet. Another month (at least) of drawn out Twitter bullshit ahead of us yet.

love him already!

he's fab, reminds me of SAF in the right ways, more positive, more assertive, more confident than Moyes by a LONG LONG way.

A lot of people getting carried away, which can be forgiven if we take into consideration the previously dull year.

There was nothing out of the ordinary, just your average run-of-the-mill press conference.

He said he "approved them" from a list of transfer targets because he thought they were talented. That for me very much make them his signings.

Is it just me that's annoyed by the Moyes type questions they keep asking him? Whats it like to be here, whats it like to be the manager of Manchester United..etc The man has managed massive clubs before, its not a leap from Everton to United. He was selected as the best man for the job by the board and he is here to do a job, stop trying to force ''its a dream'' answers from him!

Not just you mate. It's the kind of banal tosh they usually come up with.

It was a strange comment I thought as he's been at massive clubs like Barca and Bayern and surely he knows how important the brand of the club is. Maybe this is just on another level to anything he's ever seen before. I do think he would like to just train them at Carrington for 2 weeks instead of travelling to US.

I think this is the case of LVG being out of the bright lights for a few years and how things have changed since he was last involved. You just have to look at the commercial $$ uplift in all the previous leagues he was involved with and since he left.

With his "3-4 weeks to judge the players he has got" remark, he does a couple of things

- reduces chances of transfer questions from the media, letting Ed do his thing on the quiet and saving Van Gaal the bother of more questions from journalists
- suggests to players who are playing for their futures at the club (not a small number) an incentive to get their arses in gear ASAP

The "commercial" part of the press conference was towards the end and his tone was almost jocular I thought; nothing to worry about I would think. When he mentioned the commercial side of the club at the beginning of press conference it was more in relation to how we had to do a lot better than 7th to be the biggest in a true sense of the word: ie., time to shape up, lads. Nothing wrong with that.

I love him. Really hope this works out like it has the potential of doing.
