Liverpool : General discussion

Surprised that they're considering extending Mignolet's contract; or has he improved a lot lately?

He's better than he was when we signed him. He just needs to improve his confidence a little bit when it comes to dominating from corners & playing with the ball at his feet.

Would like an upgrade, but there's more desperate needs at the moment.

The difference being of course is that LVG has had nearly 18 months, & spent a fair bit of dosh, in putting together United's swashbuckling side. Klopp has yet to delve into the transfer market for Liverpool.

I don't get all the criticism your manager gets from United supporters. You're one point off spot, yet a lot of people on here are just talking about your chances of finishing top 4. The ends will justify the means if United win the league this season. & you've got every chance of doing so.

I agree redman

United have been a bit hit and miss in the transfer market and we are a work in progress

Klopp doing well to Instill confidence in Liverpool but knows himself they are also lacking at this moment

They had a Van Gaal of a performance tonight, no real chances at goal other than the wrongly disallowed one, at least we look defensively sound and the possession stats look better when we do that.

Newcastle landed them. 3rd win for the season, they will be inconsistent, just not enough quality in the ranks...

Klopp: "It's ten weeks since we last played Sion - in England that is 425 games."

Jürgen is asked how his team will differ from #LFC's first clash with Sion: "Do you work for FC Sion?!"

Seems a bit prickly. Not really needed for a simple question.

Probably already tired of English journos and their shit questions.

@Rafateria @Bob Loblaw @Tommy

What's the news on Coutinho lads? Saw he had a sub appearance midweek but will that likely be a starting place on the weekend or a bench role do you reckon?

He's our best player. Midweek was a rest for him after a little niggle, so hopefully the minutes midweek were enough to get him ready for our match.

If he's fit, he starts. I can't see it any other way.

Surely with more stats though, no?

Everyone knows that consistency isn't Cou's strong point, but he is putting in good performances on a regular basis nowadays without too many poor games. Perhaps he just needs more inspirational players around him to get him playing at his best more often.

We've apparently signed 19-year old midfielder Marko Grujic from Red Star Belgrado for £4.3m, he's supposed to be one of the top young prospects in Europe. Anyone who has watched this kid play or follows the Serbian league more closely? @Amar__ perhaps?

Nah, I have no idea who he is. I don't follow any football from around here.

He's a midfielder. That's good enough for me.

Oh goody, another Serb. We do so well with Serbs...Jonavonic, Markovic, Lovren?

Klopp has supposedly been following him for years, so that's good enough for me until he fails. And if he does I'm sure we'd get our money back so at £4.3m this may fall under the 'money ball' tag. You'd be unlikely to get that 37 yr old midfielder kicking the ball around in Sefton Park for that nowadays. His YouTube stuff is hit and miss. Tall git though.

We were playing the league leaders, who have lost just once in the PL all season, so forget the badge on their shirts, after a couple of horrendous recent performances from us. And we dominated them right from the start with some excellent performances in defence (Lovren is really picking up his game), gegenpressing, our passing and close control was ace for most of the game, we nullified the two hottest forwards in the PL and in the end we deserved to have that second that Benteke completely fecked up. 25 shots to 7. Agreed we should have done better in attack and put more away but overall it was still an excellent team performance and the marks should reflect that.

Ming - 6.5 (couple of good saves)

Moreno - 7.5 (some excellent passing and used his pace well)

Lovren - 8.5 (outstanding)

Sakho - 6.5 (less feck ups than Watford - starting to regain his form before injury)

Clyne - 7.5 (quality play all day - really needs to learn how to cross though, despite one good effort)

Henderson - 7.5 (quietly controlled the midfield)

Can - 6.5 (some very good interplay but still gives the ball way, or fires high & mighty, when going on his slalom runs)

Lallana - 7.5 (some superb demonstrations of close control and how not to give away possession. Ran them into the ground)

Firmino - 6 (better, but he still needs to improve and offer more despite good stats)

Coutinho - 6 (needs not to fire on sight)

Origi - 7 (offered pace and good runs behind until doing his hamstring)

Benteke - 6 (slow to get into the game but could / should have had a hat trick with a very good chance of a headed goal and that colossal feck up at the end of the match - took his goal very well though)

If Lovren can build on that performance, then who knows, he might have a future here after all... He is only 26, remember.

Shame that Klopp might finally realise Skrtel is the weak leak in defence.

He's a poor player, people need to stop thinking that isolated decent performances (he wasn't even amazing or anything, he was just ok) are going to set a trend or something. He'll always be an average player with the same error prone performances. Any team aiming for better things shouldn't be using him in defence.

I'm sorry, but I'm not having it. Vardy is a right ugly fecker.

He was better than 'just OK.' Two shots, 90% passing accuracy, two chances created, 3/3 tackles, 5/7 headed duels and 18 clearances is a good game. Yet to see if it is a trend obviously but he was good.

I have to agree with RiP here - it was a good peformance but nothing special, that's the kind of play I'd expect from our starting CB week in week out (especially such an expensive one at that), and unfortunately I don't think he's capable of consistently reaching that level. We should be looking at someone like Gomez, a young composed defender who's clinical and good on the ball. He's too raw right now but still very young so definitely one for the future if he keeps on improving.

Hopefully Matip signs and is his replacement in the Summer. I'd still keep Skirts as backup though. It's difficult to find anyone who gives more for his club, even though rather limited as a player.

Of course. If I was a Liverpool fan I'd expect that to be a regular thing too. I think he did him a disservice by saying he was 'just OK' though. He was better than that.

Some people still believe in Lovren?

Great stuff, I hope people running the club believe in him too, always a good laugh with him on the pitch.

I don't think he has had many games with three to choose from.

That said, Lovren's rehabilitation looks to be an actual thing, however miraculous. Before his injury, he was looking better than Skrtel. I hope he keeps his place.

It is going to take a whole lot more performance for me to believe he is a genuinely good player. That said he has been playing well of late and given the choices, I am happy for him to get more chances to prove himself right now.

We will need a centreback to compete for a starting spot in january or the summer either way. Our current selection isn't good enough collectively to duke it between them.

Skrtel at this point can go suck an egg. I am with him now as I was with Riise - We've endured too long with him lowering the quality of the first XI because he somehow keeps getting in the side due to injuries and replacements being inadequate while he passes the 'just about good enough' grade to get in the side. And all the while he is gradually getting just a bit worse with time.

It may be a bit unfair as part of it is due to him being here so long, but his time in this team is past its due date.

Agreed. He's never going to be a great, but if he can just put in performances like that consistently (as a backup CB) then I'll
