Liverpool : General discussion

Overall, I can't help but agree.

I think our striker options (when fit) are better than all but City, but we're so far behind in midfield and have more weak links in defence than any of those 4 teams. Plus they all have better keepers than us, so yeah.
That is a big if. Sturridge played less than 800 minutes last season. Liverpool has a couple of good players, but relying upon individual class won´t be enough to break into top4. Klopps needs to address some of the bigger problems (DM+winger; maybe GK and another defender) and build a team, that is better than the sum of its parts. That is doable, but needs some time.

Agree wholeheartedly. You actually mention the positions I said we needed to upgrade the most. I'll repost my initial thoughts...

Sturridge
Coutinho Firmino Lallana
Hendo Lucas
Moreno Sakho Skrtel Clyne
Mignolet.

Lucas is upgrade priority #1. He's just a walking foul nowadays, which is a shame... Skrtel & Lallana also need upgrading, but I've no issue with AL continuing as a squad/rotation player as I do think he's a good enough AM. We also definitely need another good quality CM as backup/competition for Henderson... We're so shallow in that part of the field it's unbelievable.

Moreno is a weird one. Shite defensively, good going forward... Will he replaced? I don't know.

Still a way to go for 'Pool. Beating this Chelsea side doesn't mean as much as the papers are going to make out.

Agreed, but even so impressive performance. They pretty much controlled that game except for the first 10minutes. They look awful in defense still though, that's their main weakness that other teams will take advantage of.

Midfield is our main weakness. United have 20 points so far this season because their options in that part of the pitch is practically unrivaled in this league.

Midfield is also a big issue for you, but you looked likely to concede with every set piece that came over your box and you have no defensive cover for your CB's while Moreno for me is a liability at the back. Clyne was a good step to fixing your defense, but still a long way to go. Was impressed with your forward play and passing though.

Because Chelsea are huge and we (CB's aside) aren't. Could do with our own (in-form) Matic to play the DM roll & help from set pieces  Definitely should be our first signing under Klopp.

I agree with all of that. Joe Gomez seems to be very talented, so he could fix the CB issue. The problem with your attacking formation is, that it is fairly narrow. Dunno if that would really bring the best out of those players. Improving the central midfield will help the whole team and is the first things Klopp needs to do. A couple of papers linked you with Rúben Neves. That would be a coup.

Benteke gives them another dimension. Just lump it to him and bring others in play. Haven said that, they met a worse team today.

Liverpool have a great chance of top 4 with Chelsea floundering so badly

Is it a big deal for Chelsea to miss out - it's not like FFP is being enforced and London and Abramovich's millions are incentive enough

Huge deal. We will struggle a lot more then United will if we miss out.

From what I have seen, Liverpool need to upgrade their defence, central midfield and goal keeper, possibly in that order. They can't have their current defenders or Lucas as 1st choice.

Lucas was very good today and has been since Klopp came in. He's easiy good enough for a team going for top 4.

They're now 4 points behind us and imho have a far superior manager to us. We're in a battle for fourth again (based on the shite I've had to sit through over the last few weeks).

City will walk the title.
Arsenal will easily make the top 4.

Then it's 2 places left. Chelsea look a busted flush already. So we only have to finish ahead of one of Spurs or Liverpool.

But the PL could lose the 4th place CL place. So 3rd is the minimum requirement in my eyes.

I think he was lucky today, or maybe I don't watch him closely enough. Like I said, defensively they don't look stable to me.

That's a very good point.
Not for next CL season. If England lose the 4th CL place during this season, then it means that only 3 teams qualify for the CL in the next PL season (which is 16/17), therefore only 3 English teams would play in the 17/18 champions league. The effect is always delayed for a year, so that the leagues know how many teams will qualify for Europe during the season is played.

In short, 4 English teams will play in the CL next season, no matter if England lose the 4th CL spot this season or not.

Tougher away games played this season now:
Arsenal (1 pt)
Spurs (1pt)
Utd (0pts)
Everton (1pt)
Chelsea (3pts)

6 out of 15 points which doesn't look great, but the key here is that apart from Utd we've ensured all those teams have dropped at least two crucial points at home each too.

Now looking forward to sequence of games which aren't interjected by those nightmare fixtures (City and Palace aside).

We've looked a lot more stable under klopp. I no longer feel nervy when we don't have the ball.

Sakho is looking immense.

The weakness of the Liverpool squad is overplayed. We are as well stocked as anyone bar City going forward (which is the most important thing for me - goals = points), and I'm slowly beginning to gain confidence in the defence - which seems to have improved vastly under Klopp. The midfield needs some quality but I believe it is functional enough to get us top four.

Still very early days, but we're improving. Sakho, Lucas and Lallana have impressed me the most in recent weeks.

As a Liverpool fan, I'll say that unless we go on a miracle run ala 13/14 (which we won't), then we will not finish above United. Your midfield will win you a lot of games that our midfield won't.

That being said, I do think you're an injury to Martial away from drawing a lot more than winning. Wilson & Rooney aren't there, and past that you have no options. If we lose Benteke right now, with Ings and Sturridge injured, we're also pretty damn screwed.

Well, there's Origi

Lallana? Thought he's been very very mediocre since (and well...before) Klopp joined.

Great performance by the majority of the team today, like most I thought Sakho was excellent. Milner one of the only negatives, he was dismal again.

Yeah, he has the first touch of a brick it seems.
