Liverpool 2016/17 - Performance and chat thread.

..and although he "lost" the armband, he´s still taking penalties, which is a clear sign of trust, responsibility and status. I still remember the 2009 U21 finals against Germany. All the Germans that became stars, even the bench, and the only English player that stood out to me was Milner.

 maybe because he was overage?

Been really impressed by Wijnalum so far. I didn't quite know what to make of him tbh. What little I'd seen of him consisted mainly of MOTD highlights so all I really noticed was he had a knack for making well timed runs into the box from midfield but now we've seen he's got much more to his game

Grujić did well last night, has a certain class on the ball. What's the general consensus among Liverpool fans of him? High hopes?

yeah, he was excellent in pre-season and a real goal threat too which didn't come across too much last night but he was pretty good on the ball and made some key passes that set up chances or got some moves going. Defensively he's still a bit rusty but that's something that can be coached/learned over time. But he looks a real prospect at the minute.

I wonder exactly what happened with that positive test and what's gone on behind the scenes.

He's had the Schweinsteiger treatment although the press have ignored it being Klopp as opposed to Mourinho.

Not a great player but still young and as you said he did seem to be improving. On drugs or not he was very good against us.

Not exactly the same though. Has Schweinsteiger done anything or complained? May have missed it.

Sakho was thought highly of by klopp, just have to listen to his interviews last season. Don't think it had anything to do with the suspension, he was late multiple times in preseason and was late for the flight. Klopp sent him home and then Sakho stupidly complained on Snapchat. Shame. Always liked him, but the silver lining is that Matip looks great, and Gomez has just come back from injury.

Allegedly there's been issues with Schweinsteiger behind the scenes last season.

I'd say the situation is very similar. They have both been humiliated and had the doors closed on them. Yaya is another one.

Evil Mourinho sells more papers though and causes more controversy. Especially at the biggest club in England and one of the biggest in the world.

Oh right. wasn't aware of the Schweinsteiger stuff.

Problem was Sakho is that he stupidly took it to social media. Honestly think there was a way back before that but that may have been the nail in the coffin.

But agree to a degree, klopp's all smiles usually but can be ruthless.

You're probably right, that Mourinho at Utd sells more papers. But I think, that because it is Schweinsteiger, being a worldknown profile for ten years or more, would have a lot more to do with the bigger focus from media. He had just captained Germany to European Champions.

Still waiting on Karius.

Matip and Wijnaldum have been excellent and I think exceeded expectations of the optimistic fans, nevermind neutrals.

Wijnaldum in particular is turning out to be a really cultured and savvy midfielder. I expected him to struggle more with the deeper role than he has, but he seems to always know what to do, always solving problems and finding positive solutions for his teammates. Think we would have played a far more composed game against you if he had played.

Mane I think has been about par for expectations. He's been good, but also getting some extra plaudits simply for what his type of player brings to the side. I am still hoping for another gear in him.

Also worth mentioning - the non signing of a left back. Milner has been a revelation there and really strengthens the first XI now.
+ 1 on everything. Good post.

I think he's surprised all of us tbh. He looks like he's been playing there for years. He's a top professional who will play anywhere for the club and getting him in at LB was a great piece of management. I'd still like a proper left back next summer but it's certainly not a priority anymore
He is a proper fullback ! Yes, he may be a converted midfielder but he is playing superbly as LB and has all the right tools. I think we'd be very hard pressed to find anyone better straight off the bat, anyone we signed would need work to integrate, something that happened with Milner from the very first match at LB. We obviously need better than Moreno as backup for sure so someone who can compete for LB would be nice, but I don't think anyone would walk into that slot now.

Oh no doubt. Klopp doesn´t f*** around. He´s your best friend, but you better not cross him. Then there is almost no way to repair the friendship. I think Mourinho either acted on club´s orders and took the hit publicly or it´s indeed a strange decision to virtually dump him during his honeymoon. I´m a manager, I´d choose a clean slate approach. I don´t care what happened in the past.

On match day.

Ironically, just a few weeks before, he had talked in an interview about how he has no patience for player tantrums on matchday - On matchday, everyone has to be focused on the team.

Then Sakho goes and tweets about lies and setting the record straight hours before kickoff.

So, What do we think about the Palace game?

I'm a little worried about this game especially with Bentekkers wanting to prove a point. Think they will score and as its Liverpool we shouldn't expect anything less as something always just drops for any given opposition. A real test for Matip and Lovren but also for Clynne who will have to stop Zaha from cutting in and with those dangerous crosses.

Saying all that I think we should be thinking what problems we will cause them. Our speed will give them all sorts of worries but we need to finish a couple of chances out of the dozens we tend to create.

Saw it in the WBA game in getting the earlier goal settled us down and even when they scored they never gave us any real problems. I was at the game and there was no nerves coming from the stands. That was another game where lfc where commanding in defense and I think we have been really improving despite what people have been saying.

I'm going for a 1-3 to pool but with a little nagging doubt.

Will be a real test of your new found defensive stability at set pieces. Palace will really test you in that area but you should manage a win

I did mean in general play we have improved. Set pieces are still shit ;)

I thought you had improved from set pieces this season? stats may prove me wrong but I cant remember seeing you concede many recently

Maybe we have but it just looks like we will concede at every free kick and corner. Matip looks a good signing though.

I think it's a difficult game. Palace have put in more crosses and Benteke has won more headers than anyone else this season. Considering how indecisive Karius has been, I think that's an area Palace will look to exploit.

Despite that obvious flaw we should have too much for them. Palace's wins in 2016 seem to mostly come against sides in or close to the bottom five. If we play like we have done for the most part this season then we should pick up the points.

Aye, when Benteke feels like it he's a proper handful. He will score imo

Palace have been pretty dreadful for a while now haven't they? I expect Liverpool to win. Maybe they'll concede from a corner or something but I think it will be 3-1 to 'pool.

To put in crosses for Benters to be useful Palace will need to commit wide players forward. If they do that they will leave their FBs exposed which are just the areas we like to work in. The two defensive holding players will not be able to leave the central areas to help out as Coutinho, Lallana Wijnuldum and Mane like the middle attacking areas too. Its a tough one for Palace, do they park the bus and isolate Benters completely, except for set pieces, or do they go for glory?

I'm finally becoming more excited than nervous before our games even if we lose. That hasn't happened in a long while.

I'm liking your analysis @Dumbstar :)

  • Palace have been dreadful
  • we have been excellent.

...so naturally 2-2. That's the Liverpool way.

They will try to play the same way we did against you. Allow you to have the ball in non-threatening area's and bypass your high press with balls into the centre forward with the likes of Townsend and Zaha expected to counter attack quickly to support Benteke when he holds up play from these balls.

The question is will they put in the kind of defensive performance to hold you out for 90 minutes and will they take the few chances they get in the final third. The way they've been playing I'd say no to the former but possibly regarding the latter.

Best chance for you lot to finally pick up points at Selhurst.

Is right on the money. And it's not often I agree with you since you generally have a disproportionately negative outlook on anything Liverpool (though I could also be accused of the polar opposite - but at least I feel good until after the match)!

Palace's home matches this season have not been anything to get excited about, 0-1 WBA, 1-1 Bournemouth, 4-1 Stoke (a bit of an anomaly since Stoke were in disarray at that time) and 0-1 vs. West Ham. This Palace team isn't even as good as last season's. We should win this and I'll go CP 1-3 LFC. However this is the PL and shocks do get thrown up more often than in some other leagues, it would be a surprise if we don't win there though.

I fully expect you to win vs Palace this time. They aren't the same this season as they were last year. 2-0 Liverpool I think.

Bad news, fecking Moreno will be in.

Edit my prediction. 2-1 two pens from that plick :(

Klopp's been quoted as saying it's unclear at the moment with Milner. He did some running yesterday so might be ok.

Sheesh, it was actually quite entertaining watching Moreno's madness in a League Cup game but in a League game it's pretty nerve racking. I actually think I'd rather put Alexander-Arnold in and have Clyne at left back :nervous:

We have brought through players, they just haven't been as good as Gerrard. Shelvey is the only one that comes to mind at the moment, played consistently in the premier league for Swansea, and is now at Newcastle I think in the Championship. Not a bad career he's had.

Ibe is another one, playing at Bournemouth currently... oh, and how could I forget. Sterling.
I thought he was brought through by Charlton?

I'm only negative because of where we've been since Benitez left. Apart from one Suarez-driven season we've been stuck in mid-table and any signs of progress seem to end with us falling back down again.

I'm not saying we'll never get back to the here we were but my optimism is matched by cautious pessimism as I know how quickly things can fall apart.

I do think we're on a very promising path with Klopp though.

I thought he was brought through by Charlton?

Yes, but he made his name for himself with us. Nobody knew who he was at Charlton, it was at Liverpool where he started to get noticed.
We were the biggest part of his development.

He was at Charlton for 6 years and played over 42 times with 7 goals in the senior team. Not sure on his youth stats.

He played for Liverpool for 3 seasons and 47 times...

He's a Charlton product.

On a side note amazing to think he's still 24 only.

C.Ronaldo came to United at a younger age (18) and stayed for 6 years (longer than he played at Sporting) He played over 200 games for the club versus 20 odd in Lisbon. It's in circumstances like that I think it's hard to say who should take credit.

I haven't seen the game yet but apparantly it was fookin' mental.

Coutinhio was on blob according to the match reports.

Was a great game. We should have finished them off in the first half. Coutinho is now a fully fledged Iniesta replacement.
