Liverpool 2014/15 | WARNING: Contains strong amounts of Scouse nonsense

I'd rather we signed nobody. I think he's hilarious...when he's at someone else's club, feck having him at your own.

Even aside from the attitude problems he's been inconsistent throughout his whole year, won't fit into our pressing game and is more static than our recent forwards so we'll have to change our tactics. Not worth it just for someone to chuck it back in our face with stupid red cards and non-existent work rate.

Not sure about his inconsistency, nearly a 1:2 goal scoring record (30 in 54 for Milan) is pretty damn decent. His non-existent work rate (or to be exact, team play) is a bit of a myth actually too (see video below) though I agree he doesn't suit our pressing style, not that Sturridge is much of a presser either.

Fact is if Studge gets injured (highly likely since he's rather susceptible to minor knocks that put him out of action for a game or two) then our only other resource is Lambert and whilst he is a good player to have on the bench to come on when in dire need or sub off Studge, I'd not want him leading our line with his lack of pace. We need another striker (and no way can we start the season without strengthening further, it's not worth taking the risk of losing Top 4, not challenging and failing in the CL .. if we lose Studge) and we've obviously tried for a number of Europe's best, but for one reason or another none have come off. Barrett however says Falcao remains our top target (one year loan with option to buy) but we are readying the Super Mario deal in case it doesn't come off.

If we have Balotelli for 2-3 years and he keeps up his 0.47 goals per match then we'll be laughing even with his occasional mad-cap antics and red cards (4 in 2.5 yrs).

AC Milan want £16m, (€20m) for Mario Balotelli. Talks between the clubs have started. No bid yet, but Milan are willing to sell him.

Balotelli would not at all fit Liverpool's system. He's the opposite of a player you want. he's incredibly lazy

Possibly but Sturridge came with a supposed attitude and selfish problem but has thrived beyond belief under Rodgers.

not the attitude and selfishness. Balotelli is just a lazy player. He won't really look for the ball, press, or move about.

@Milanello: Mediaset reports tha Milan and Liverpool have reached an agreement regarding the sale of Balotelli - allegedly around €22m.

I'm pretty tired so apologies in advance for not giving this the well thought out reply it deserves, but anyway.

Completely agree with what you said in the second paragraph, we definitely do need a new striker and if Sturridge is out injured it's a massive risk relying on only Lambert as a striker. Just not convinced Balotelli is the answer either, though of course we're in a bit of a mess now with so few options left.

You're right that Sturridge isn't the biggest presser(though not as bad as Mario), but you can get away with 1 player slacking off a bit in a pressing system. 2 though? It's going to completely fall apart if two of your front line aren't pressing, which means on the (most likely) common occasion we play them together we'll have to completely change style. Not only because of the pressing but because Mario's a lot more static than what we're used to. It's a big change for someone who probably won't be happy sitting on the bench every week. I'd much rather have someone who's sane, but more importantly can play out wide as well as centrally so we can switch about with formations - I know Balotelli started out wide when he was younger but that hasn't happened for years.

There is one over-riding issue we needed to resolve, the lack of a striker that can play in place of Studge if he is injured or otherwise unable to play. Remy unfortunately failed his medical because I thought he was perfect for our system(s) and would work very well alongside Sturridge or in his stead.
Now we've tried to secure Sanchez, Cavani, Falcao, Lacazette (sp.), Bony and Benzema (and these are only the ones having credible reports - there may well have been others, Reus perhaps, that never saw the light of the fans' day) however for one reason or another each of these fell through or didn't even get past Go. The only other viable options left with 10 days left in the transfer window are Bony (again, and at £19m) or Eto'o (who is not going to be able to play a pressing game at his age either).

Balotelli is a nutter, we all know that, however he is also extremely talented and could easily achieve the same level as the majority of those listed above, if he can mature. We shouldn't forget he's only 23 yrs old (and most of his bad shit happened when he was a teenager or 20/21, so that even if this goes tits up and we are forced to sell him in a year or two, he will probably still have scored goals at roughly a 1:2 / 1:3 ratio and we should get most of our money back selling to the next club ready to take a chance on his talent being worth more than his temperament is detrimental.

If you watch the video I posted above you'll see him often in the LM/RM channels, I imagine with Moreno (especially) and Manquillo that we'll be seeing a lot more of them on the outside and with Sterling, Lallana and Markovic I don't see Studge or Mario spending too much time out wide at all, unless pulling wide to take defenders with them and create space for one of those three. What he does offer is fantastic skill on the ball, great pace, a penchant for the unexpected (both good and bad !), superb free kicks from long or short distance and an ability to score in a hat full of different ways. In other words unpredictability - something that is very difficult to defend against. He could end up being a fantastic signing for us .... or could just as easily fail dramatically. Which ever way it goes we needed to take a gamble on someone and, with Rodgers history of getting the best out of difficult youngsters or those with unfulfilled potential, I'm pretty excited it's someone as overtly talented as Balotelli we've signed.

To be fair, I'd rather have Balotelli than lukaku, never mind that he cost 50% more.

He needs to show he can do what the manager asks though. At 24,he must know this is the time if he wants to utilise his actual potential.

Indeed, that's what I meant about us being in a mess, we've tried for some many players now and failed to deliver any (for various reasons). Missing out on Alexis was a huge blow, he would have been the best Suárez-lite player we could have got.

You think we'll be seeing a lot more of the diamond then? I really don't like that formation but it's hard to see any other option if we get Balotelli, as I can't see Sturridge being happy playing on the right.

Only thing I'd add is that even though I don't want him, £16m is a lower fee than I was expecting so slightly less concerned with the signing because of that.

Edit: diamond being the only option if we play them both. That obviously won't happen every game.

BR had no qualms about using the midfield diamond last season but he also had no problem mixing it up with his preferred 4-3-3 either so I reckon we'll be seeing plenty of both again this. Which one he goes with will probably depend on the opposition and player availability. But we've got real depth and this attacking line-up is frighteningly fast and skilful :
Sturridge
Sterling
Balotelli
Coutinho
Lallana
Markovic

+lambert.

That is world's apart from having to put on Moses or Aspas when new impetus was needed. The only thing they added was the "we'll have to run like we're down to ten men now" factor for the other players.

Indeed. For Lambo I didn't think the 'frighteningly fast' bit applied ;)

I'd rather Mad Mario than Bony and several of the other strikers we've been linked with.

I declare myself eminently satisfied with our transfer business this summer. Alexis would have been ideal but wasn't to be. Really happy with the squad we're going in to the season with now.

A keeper to improve on mignolet would be ideal, but perhaps asking too much.

Yeah. I was happy with remy as squaddie but not as Suarez replacement. With Balotelli, we have one who will full the squaddie part we're missing up front but could potentially be a whole lot more.

Lots of questions to be asked of Balotelli, but he has the right profile in terms of stature and age.

Aye. Plus we now have three of our first five penalty takes for whrn we're in Berlin. Rodgers is doing some wonderful planning ahead with signing Lambert and (hopefully) Balotelli.

If Borini goes to Sunderland for the assumed 14 million, then the Balotelli deal looks even better (economically) for Liverpool.

I was exaggerating with the rather nobody than Mario post in fairness. Kinda excited about the signing even though I have some very big reservations about it. It'll be a master-stroke or a disaster, no inbetween with Balotelli.

At least we've done our business, its not expensive, and we now have cover where there was an obvious gulf. I agree with others, I'm happier now than before Balotelli signed, despite having reservations about his antics.

Sterling, Mario and Sturridge cost around £33m. Not bad considering Carroll was quite a few quid more.

Economically, Borini for £14m is the best business since the USA bought Alaska off the Russians for three bottles of vodka and a packet of cigarettes.

I know this one is hard on the Liverpool players, they need a replacement and technically Mario is good enough, he just comes with so many issues

One thing that is impressive about the transfer is the time it took to get done. First heard the rumour Tuesday night, and by Wednesday night/Thurs morning they had snapped him up for a low fee. We can't even do that by paying big fee's.

Alex Song is still out there and with 9 days to go I'm hopeful :D

Weren't we tying up Romero ? Or did that fizzle out ?

I assumed romero was as good as done, but it has gone strangely quiet.

Not fussed about song now. Would have taken him in a heartbeat at the start of the summer but that was before Lallana and Can signed. Now, even with Lucas going, we still have the numbers we need in midfield.

Interesting that the rumours are that Rodgers doesn't want Balotelli.

either Balotelli is going to be first choice and tear up the goals for them or he won't be picked ahead of Sturridge so will end up leaving in January after complaining about it lol

Overrated and a massive liability... Suits Liverpool very well.

More than a rumour no? Didn't he say at the beginning of the month Balotelli absolutely wouldn't be signing for Liverpool?
Yeah you're right.

"I was asked the question about Balotelli last week and spoke about what a talent he is and excellent player he is,” Rodgers said. “But I can categorically tell you that he will not be coming to Liverpool."

Would be interesting to see how he plays him then, seeing that Balotelli looks to be forced on him.

I can't remember if it was in this one or the other thread, there's so many scouser threads  but I think Sturridge was forced upon him when they bought him and wasn't a personal choice. I think he's quite pragmatic and will probably try to get the best out of Balo and not try to prove a point to his board in any case.

Song is a real, mature, DM or CM, someone who could take over from Gerrard and we'd hardly skip a beat (lose some attacking prowess, gain some defensive clout). Can may progress to that but I see him more of a Henderson Mk II, Lallana is an attacking midfielder.

Song has too many flaws to nail down any position: positionally too poor to play as a holding midfielder, too lazy to play as a box-to-box midfielder and not technically good enough to play as an attacking midfielder. I'd hate it if he came here, all he's good at doing is throwing himself into challenges and playing through balls, apart from that he's brainless.

I don't rate Song as a holding midfielder. Have higher hopes for Can in that role, or even Allen.

Think he's excellent as a Henderson style midfielder though. Not sure we need another of those now though.
