Liverpool 2014/15 | WARNING: Contains strong amounts of Scouse nonsense

Ah, forgot you had Moreno to take Johnsons place, that's good news for you. Sterling looks to have hit the ground running again, brilliant player to watch, his desire and hunger alone is something every fan would love in a player on their team.

Good win for us. Tadic and Wanyama both were brilliant for Southampton. Wanyama kept Coutinho out of the game Pretty shite atmosphere. I thought Lucas had a good first half, but dropped off dramatically the second half. Here's to you Jordan Henderson.... Lambert coming on at the end massively helped because of his presence rather than anything great that he did. Lovren was our best player and the less said about Johnson the better.

The difference between Liverpool's result and ours yesterday was when the ball fell to Ki on the edge of our box he stuck it away, but Davies couldn't do the same for Southampton. That's the winning and losing of it really.

The better team lost today I thought, but that's probably exactly what Rodgers would have taken at the end of the first game of the season. Good start for Liverpool overall.

Sterling has limitless potential, going to be Liverpool's best attacker this season so it will be interesting to see how he fares with the added pressure of being their talisman.

Nah Sterling was our best player I reckon. Lovren had a very good debut though.

As a unit our defence still needs a lot of work, and I don't think it's as simple as blaming individuals any more. Delighted we won though, even if it was harsh on them.

0 - Last season Liverpool were the only Premier League side not to lose any points from leading positions at home. Control.

Calling it "limitless" is of course a hyperbole, but no one can deny the obvious talent and potential the lad has. The biggest talent of the Premier League in my book and quite frankly the most impressive U21 offensive player in Europe right now.

Someone mentioned we only had two decent chances and scored two goals. #jammy

That must be the clinical Suarez effect we're missing then. :D

Great win rather than great performance. Reminded me of last season's opener with a disjointed performance but still lots of promise. Ming is a superb shot stopper.

All the big teams a bit rusty this weekend. Nobody has stood out.

Yeah, it was Suarez who got us out of jail last season apparently. We do it today with Sturridge and it's down to luck.

Lucas is a terrible footballer, why doesn't Allen start when he the much better player ?
Not sure but I thought today's line-up was unusually defensive today. I think Rodgers expected a tight match. Lucas has been a shield to the back four in recent years. I think Allen or Can will take Lucas' role sooner rather than later.

Lucas has been terrible ever since he done that injury against Chelsea in the cup.

What is up with Glen Johnson? He shoots from 30-35 yards with his left foot like he is Juninho or something. The only thing he is good at doing is carrying the ball forward at good pace with zero end product. He clearly overrates his ability that much is obvious.

Liverpool were decent in the first half but lost control of the match in the 2nd half. Coutinho was fairly anonymous but Gerrard and Henderson were pretty good with their passing. Wonder why they didn't give Can a chance instead of Lucas/Allen. Their forward line looks promising with Sterling and Sturridge being vital to Liverpool's prospects this season.

Allen was outstanding when he came on. Brought a freshness that we needed to push for that second goal. I reckon Brendan was giving Lucas his final rites before shooting him tonight...behind the stables.

Johnson had a good game against Dortmund so also earned himself a reprieve of another game. But he reverted to type and played sh*t. Can't see him not being dropped in favour of Moreno or at least Flanno. Monkey Load was very solid on the other side.

Lucas isn't terrible, it's just he and Stevie don't function well together. It should be Gerrard or Lucas + Henderson + another, not Gerrard and Lucas + Henderson.

Watching that match today, I was struggling to recall an opening day fixture where we'd played well & won the game comfortably. Having just checked the record books, you have to go back 20 years to 1994 to find the last time we won our first league match by more than one goal.

Goes without saying that we need to up our game considerably. Southampton deserved something from the game. If they continue that sort of play throughout the season, they'll finish top half I reckon.

Quite fortunate today, but as redman says, we're notoriously shit on the opening day.

I think someone in this thread said Cleverley is better than Henderson. Is he feck. He lacks a pair of testicles, to start with.

That's a pointless thing to bring up. Maybe it'd make more sense if you had the same team, manager and staff for the past 20 years.

True. Just a random observation - I'm not really taking too much from the game today.

Doesn't make it any less true though. We lost 3-0 away to West Brom in Rodgers first game in charge, yet we ended the 2nd half of that season second only to Arsenal when it came to form. We needed a late penalty save from our keeper in last season's opener against Stoke to ensure we got the 3 points. Our form was pretty hit & miss until January when we embarked on a terrific run & just missed out on the title. We were quite crap today but still managed to nick the 3 points. No reason not to believe our performances can't improve as the season progresses.

To be fair, it was more hit than miss. Top on Christmas Day.

Was at the game yesterday, atmosphere was a bit subdued, a little like the performance.

Very surprised to see Lucas start ahead of Allen or Can, thought he was average especially second half and playing him and Gerrard means we have little pace in the middle.
You cannot have them both in the same side.
We were better when he came off.

That and Johnson was our main problem. Manquillo did okay.
Allen and Lambert did well when they came on, especially the latter his strength gave us another option and clearly worried their defence.

Southampton played well and were unlucky to lose.

Hopefully have Markovic and Moreno available for the next game, and Lallana, Flanagan and Agger (assuming he stays) back and adding competition for places also.

Gerrard and Lucas really struggled. Didn't look like they could track any of the Southampton runners, especially in the 2nd half. Surely Allen or Can will be replacing Lucas in the next few matches?

We struggled a lot in the major middle part of the game. Once Allen came on and we switched to the diamond we took back control. Allen did very well, sterling found lots of joy running through the centre and two up front clearly worried Southampton.

Nervy opener but delighted with the three points, Lovren and both of Sturridge and Sterling getting on the scoresheet.

Sturridge needs to spend more time centrally and back his ability to trouble defences there.

Looking forward to seeing what Markovic, Romero, Moreno and Can can bring to the side.

Lucas sadly looks like he's done in this league at this level and Mignolet is trying too hard to convince himself he can do stay relevant when a new keeper comes in.

Are we signing Romero?

I don't think Lucas is done in the league. He just cannot play next to or with Gerrard. Luckily they've had a poor game together which means that Lucas will probably be dropped for the City game.

Those two should never be played together - as I said above. In fact Lucas will hopefully never play for us again ! Can/Allen & Henderson should be the midfield two to give support to Gerrard.
