Liverpool 2014/15 | WARNING: Contains strong amounts of Scouse nonsense

It's a real shame how much Lucas has declined since his injury problems. He's a great guy and a top pro but he's been robbed of so much physically that he does struggle a lot more than he used. I'm fine with him staying as a squad player but if he wants more game time we should let leave, deserves to be treated well.

@BarneyLFC @B20

Bob has said it more succinctly than I, however the fact remains Lucas is no longer worthy of a place in the squad. I'd take Allen, Can or Rossiter ahead of him as a substitute for SG and there is no way on earth Lucas should be starting in midfield alongside Henderson (as one of the two in the 1-2). I know RAWK will ban me from ever attempting to join their ranks (as if I would) for this heretical statement but the fact is there are far better players available.

The Southampton midfield strode through him time and again and he was partly culpable for their goal too. Watch him fail to track the runner here :

Song and Khedira are both available for under £10m and both would be a massive upgrade and capable for standing in for SG too. Prefer Song to Khedira (who's a bit of a softy) though. So hopefully Lucas will be gone before the end of August and maybe a far better replacement will be in situ. I'd thank him for his time and his loyalty, but that time is well past.

Suarez's 31 goals brought Liverpool 16 points in 2013-14, compared to 20 points from 21 goals for Sturridge, more than any other player in the league.

Add another 2 to that growing total.

Sturridge had 9 goals in 9 in league games for LFC when Suarez didn't play.

- 5 goals in 4 games to end 2012/13 (3 goals against Fulham, 2 against Newcastle)

- 4 goals in 5 games to start 2013/14 (1 goal against every team bar Southampton)

His goal in this season's opener makes it 10 goals in 10 league games.

@Rafateria

Rather than hoping he never plays for us again, how about hoping he finds his level again?

Saying he is no longer worthy of the shirt is just bullshit. He's never given less than 100% for us and has been an excellent servant for us, whose level and performance has been wrecked by injuries.

Henderson's assist. I can only assume that people who say he's nothing but average have not ever actually watched him play.

He reached a good level before his injury but it was typical hyperbole from Liverpool fans about how good he was because everyone was so critical of him when he first joined. He has always been relatively average on the ball though when it comes down to it.

Uninspiring more like. He's always been composed, reliable and with good decision making on the ball.

So your last sentence is the reason to keep him here ? Sorry, I've never been party to the Lucas love-in, he had one excellent spell before his injury and the odd very good match here ion previous seasons (and was worth his place in the squad, team even at one time). If you think he's worth his place for the sentimental reasons you've given then maybe you need to reassess your priorities. We have better options, hopefully we'll use them.

I am not saying he should stay for those reasons. But the way you speak about him is just plain disrespectful to him as a Liverpool player who has been a good servant and always given his all for us.

I thought Lucas was solid for most of the game yesterday (barring watching the ball for the goal). Problem was more to do with the fact that he offers nothing going forward and playing him alongside Gerrard completely slowed us down both in terms of how quickly we moved the ball, and in terms of our energy in midfield.

Pretty clear they don't work as a midfield two. I expect Lucas will be a decent deputy for Gerrard this season though.

No it's not. It's the way you read it as it seems you are invested and easily take offence. I want him gone - am I not allowed to say that without sugar coating it ?

He just looks sluggish to me, I think injuries have taken their toll. There was a couple of times he lazily gave the ball away just outside our own box in the second half that on another day could have cost a goal.

I like his attitude, especially given the stick he took earlier on with us but for me Allen and Can should be ahead of him - to be honest I am still surprised Brendan chose to play him alongside Gerrard, it just doesn't work.
Furthermore Can did well against Dortmund, I was surprised he didn't play yesterday unless he didn't want 3 new players in at once which in itself might have been strange had Markovic & Lallana been available for selection to add to the options.

He was top class for a year under Dalglish.

I'm happy enough with Lucas as Gerrard's deputy. You only have to look at how he performed without Gerrard to see he's a good player still. Over the Christmas period where Gerrard was injured he was very good. Arguably our most complete performance of the season was beating Spurs and he was excellent in that game without Gerrard I believe.

When you are using phrases like "hopefully he'll never play again" and "not worthy" that's Voronin talk, not talk about a player who may be past it but should be appreciated for his contributions.

I don't need pictures to drive home that point, given how I've already said in this thread it looks like he may need to move on.

So you prefer the sugar-coating because plain talking (not disrespecting, there's a difference you seem incapable of appreciating) affronts your sensibilities. OK got it.

Everton fan brings up Lucas...has a pop...two Reds fall out over it...Everton fan walks away pleased with night's work...divide and rule...

If the Falcao link is plausible then 'pool have to go all out. They can offer more money I think(fee and wages) than Juve. He'll play in better league as well.

Just a question about the Falcao rumours. If he were to go to Liverpool, how would he fit in? Would it be both he and Sturridge in the diamond? Sturridge out wide in a 4-3-3? One on the bench?

They could both play in the 4-3-3 with Studge wide right as he was most of last season or the diamond would work just as well if not better.

From what I remember of Falcao he's a target man so he would play through the middle and have a lad slightly deeper than him like Sturridge. When Lambert came on against Soton he played a role like Falcao would for me and did it to the best of his ability. I'm not sure Falcao would move but isnt there rumours over his exact age as in he may be a few years older than he claims.

I would expect it would be a 4-4-2 diamond if Brendan wants to play both and we'll have the option to switch to a 4-3-3 if one is injured or we want to drop one of them.

Or watched him in 2011 and developed a fixed opinion of him. He's one of the most improved players in the league. Few would have picked him ahead of Wilshere a year ago, now Henderson's game is ahead of his.

Sturridge didn't play wide last year? It'll be the diamond if the transfer happened, can't see it though.

Yeah, Sturridge drifted about but he spent the majority of the time centrally, as the most advanced player.

What would you guys think of Balotelli for £17.5m?

I can't see you going for that as he's the complete opposite of what Rodger's wants to build at Liverpool with all his talk about the "group" and players sacrificing themselves for their teammates. He's a talent undoubtedly and that price if true is very low in a market where Shane Long goes for £11m but I'd imagine it would be a matter of time before himself and Sturridge fell out and both end up sulking on the pitch.

What would you guys think of Balotelli for £17.5m?

Galliani: "At the moment no offer has arrived from LFC for Balotelli so there are no negotiations. Window closes on Sep1 so we'll see." I interpret that as 'Liverpool have been given permission to talk to his agent and Balotelli is open to the move. We'll get around to club-to-club discussions if they agree to move forward'.

I know many 'Pool fans are not interested but it could be a good deal all round. Maybe €20m and £75k per week. A nutter perhaps but he has an excellent scoring record and doesn't seem to mind his time on the bench too much (at least it seemed that way for the majority of his time at City). He'll get far more pitch-time with us too.

I've been saying for ages that the whole Balotelli package seems right for us (and is in line with FSG's money ball) as a temporary measure whilst we bide our time over a striker that we really do want. He has a superb scoring record (goals per game) too. Seems far more realistic than Falcao that's for sure !

[article]French news outlet RMC Sport have got tongues flapping on both sides of the English channel on Wednesday posting an incredible rumour about Liverpool making a move for Radamel Falcao. According to the report, Liverpool are preparing to offer Monaco £12m to get Falcao on loan for the 2104-15 season.
It’s further claimed that should Liverpool tie up the loan deal, the Reds would be aiming to structure a deal with Monaco to permanently sign Falcao for £31m million next summer. RMC Sport carry a quote in their article from an unnamed source, saying “the club is aware of the strong interest from Liverpool but the offer has still not arrived at the offices of AS Monaco”.[/article]

Rather than spam the Twitter thead..

Whats the point in a static Balotelli who will score less than Sturridge in that system?

Saying that.. I guess him in the middle with Sterling and Sturridge running beyond him would be a lot better than Sterling Sturridge and Markovic or whoever.

Still, it's the wrong position to bring in the quality. Get quality on the wing and keep Sturridge in the middle.

Getting the best out of Balotelli contrasts with getting the best out of Sturridge.

Sturridge will do a job for you on the wing but surely he deserves his chance in the middle for you. Especially if Balotelli is only a loan with an option.

On Barneys suggestion that Liverpool will play a diamond to accommodate both Sturridge and Balotelli.

I know you've used a variety of formations, but they were all with high pressing, fast interchanges and wing play (mostly getting wingers in behind).

Changing to a diamond can't really suit that style/philosophy very well? It'd seem a waste of what you've built up.

To me Liverpools main reason for optimism is that your players suit the style and know how to play it. Suarez or not youre quick in transition and awfully good at pressing.

This would lose that somewhat, no?

We used the diamond last season too during the run in to great effect.

Was it really to great effect though? Considering..

But anyway, it wasn't really a diamond though since Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling were so interchangeable. Or atleast not the diamond you'd be playing with Balotelli as he won't offer you that, he won't pull wide, and he won't work nearly as hard. It's not nearly the same.

I just don't see how he's a player who could do anything but disturb their style. He'd likely score some goals for them - of course he would. But if they wanted to continue to play how they did last season then I don't get it, and progress Sturridge and Sterling then I just don't get it.

Balotelli works better in a team who builds slowly. The only way it could really work here is to have him as a focal of a 4-3-3 and make use of his ability as a target man who could play Sturridge/Sterling running in behind him. But to me, that just wastes Sturridge and fair play to him, he more than deserves his chance for them.

I think Balotelli could be a fecking fantastic signing. He'd receive massive adulation at Anfield, could drive him on to be the player he has the potential to be.
