Liverpool 2014/15 | WARNING: Contains strong amounts of Scouse nonsense

Yea remember it vividly, fecking West Aaaaam. You could say Blackburn then was the first incarnation of cash soaked success we see in the modern game today. The original SAS fired them to the title, it really was an astonishing season.

That is a good point, never thought of that. Weren't some of the Serie A clubs richer and more extravagant when it came to transfers during that time frame, with Serie A being the best league at that time? Perhaps most/all of them had good revenues and didn't have a tycoon for an owner. Don't have too much knowledge about football in the 90s.

Was a fantastic match. The Dortmund supporters are a great set. I thought our defence looked really good for the first time in a while. Lovren and Manquillo both were very good and Skrtel and Johnson were fairly solid (though Skrtel had a couple of Skrtel moments). Gerrard screened the defence well and played a few brilliant passes. Can and Lucas were both solid, but nothing special I thought. Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling and Sturridge were

For all the money Liverpool have spent I think only Lovren is a top signing, which must be fairly disappointing for the fans. Lallana is a very good Prem player but I'm not sure he's better than Sterling or Sturridge, while Can, Markovic, Lambert are very good additions to the squad if not the first team. Given the demands of the champions league, the loss of Suarez, the presence of Van Gaal along with Chelsea, Man City & Arsenal looking strong, I cannot see Liverpool finishing in the top four again if they don't add to their team significantly before the end of the window. In particular they could do with a top midfielder and a striker but it just doesn't look like happening. And I don't think Bony would fit all that well into the side.

I'd say the squad is a striker short. Other than that it looks very competitive. Not sure I agree about a midfielder.

Lallana isn't an upgrade on current players but that wasn't the point. It was about adding to the quantity of good players to the squad.

We aren't going to sign someone better than Sturridge or Sterling. Can looks very good so far. Markovic is raved about by people who have watched him so I'll take their words for it and if he's as good as they say, then he'll definitely be a regular. If Manquillo keeps up the level of performance that he showed today and we do sign Moreno then I'll be delighted with our first eleven. Signing a top midfielder at this point would be useless. The time to spend big on a midfielder will come when Gerrard is no longer a regular. And Rodgers has come out and said he wants to sign a striker so how does it not look like happening?

I think Liverpool can do even better without Suarez. They can be more tactically sound without him, since they had to play Coutinho at CM at times

Coutinho spoke recently on how Rodgers is attempting to mould him into a midfield general.

If in a midfield 3 there's no reason that Countinho couldn't be great there.

Gerrard brings you that pivot, taking responsibility on the ball and offering quality balls from deep. Henderson/Can can be a nuisance off the ball, link the play with the wing/attackers and Coutinho brings you a player who can skip past a man and do damage - particularly with the players they've got in attack willing to constantly run in behind.

Moreno deal is apparently going to finally be completed after the Super Cup according to some papers in Seville.

Because it looks like it will be Bony.

I reckon Man Utd this season have a good chance of doing what your lot did last season. No CL to worry about will help them focus on the league. Arsenal & Chelsea will push Man City close for the title. That leaves Liverpool as the odd ones out.

If they're signing Bony hopefully they do it before our season opener against Swansea.

I was very impressed with Liverpool today, I know it wasn't that strong a Dortmund side but Sterling and Coutinho are so creative that I can see plenty of goals even without Suarez.

A friend of mine is a big Bordeaux fan, and it looks like Ilori will be loaned to them. He was asking me for more info on the player, can the Scousers in here provide a quick summary on him (strengths, weaknesses, your expectations...)?

Cheers!

I saw him play a few times in La Liga last season, he's very fast, fairly tall but not filled out his frame yet. I'd say he has a lot of potential.

I saw some of the highlights of the Dortmund game and while I don't like Liverpool that much they play some absolutely brilliant football.

Put your dicks away lads, it's pre-season and you can't tell anything from pre-season....right.
True, but that performance and result was typical of lots of performances and results last season. It suggests Liverpool are continuing the aggressive attacking with pace being central to the approach.

At home I think a lot of teams will struggle to cope.

That performance (or more accurately the style of it) also suggests that the rumours, that we will attempt to cover for Luis' transfer by pushing the MFers forward more, is true.

Agreed. Henderson was consistently advanced during attacking moves, something that wasn't always common last season. Goals from midfield are vital for a strong season.

He played in the three in a 4-2-3-1 though. It remains to be seen whether or not he'll have similar freedom if we revert to a 4-3-3.

True but I don't think Rodgers will 'revert' to any system for any length of time. He appears to be very flexible in how his team sets up. I reckon a variety of formations are likely.

Was it the Dortmund first team? Worrying signs if so.

No. There were four or five nailed on starters who played. The rest were squad players (the likes of Jojic, Aubameyang, Ginter, Sokratis) which are still better than the majority of premier league sides. It's preseason though so can't read too much into it.

It could have easily been more than 4-0 too. Dortmund were garbage
How far were they along their preparations? Does Bundesliga kick off later?

EDIT: just checked, they kick the weekend after the PL. Still very good result for Pool, though I guess more important than the result for them is that their key players seem ready.

Answer my question about Ilori you bastards! (thanks Manucho by the way)

Not really. Starting line up.

Langerak, Piszczek, Papastathopoulos, Ginter, Schmelzer, Kirch, Kehl, Mkhitaryan, Jojic, Ramos, Aubameyang.

So their German WC players missing, plus Reus of course. They're also a week behind in terms of fitness, they dont start for a fortnight I believe.

Ilori hasn't played for Liverpool so an insightful assessment isn't easy.

Dortmund were absolute wank. Possibly even worse than Bayer Leverkusen, who Moyes' team thrashed 5-0 last season in the CL.

I could only see highlights and Aubameyang wasn't really shown much - how did he play ? I really like this guy and he could be a good option for us.

I expect to see a similar formation next week instead of Brodge's preferred 4-3-3, so 4-2-3-1 with Jones, Sakho, Allen, Markovic, Lambert, Ibe and Flanno on the bench.

-----------------Mignolet------------------

Manquillo---Skrtel---Lovren---Johnson

-------------------Gerrard------------------
--------------------------Emre Can

Henderson--- Coutinho --------Sterling

-------------------Sturridge-----------------

Three decent players in a team of mediocrity.

Who are the three? From my view I'd say: Coutinho, Sturridge, Sterling, Lovren, Henderson, and Gerrard would be good enough to play (or at least fight for spots) in our squad at the moment.
