No real outstanding attributes and too often a liability. Typical United material

He's really exposed in this back 3.

Unfortunately I think we may need the opposite profile of defender to replace Lisandro. Quicker, taller and more dynamic.

Great attitude and good passing. Unfortunately, it doesn't make up for his severe lack of pace and height. Especially not in this system where he's expected to defend the channels.

Too small to be great.
Too slow to be great

A 55m gamble in a world where Arsenal bought his higher rated partner for a fraction of the cost. The jokes write themselves.

Thanks Eth.

It’s a massive worry the point around the channels… with Shaw never fit, is LCB another position to add to the summer shopping list?

This squad has some pretty big misalignments with this system.

He’s never had pace but I feel his injuries have made him a bit slower but more importantly he’s not as biting in the tackle. We could always rely on him to go in hard on the attacker, win the ball and then do what he still does very well, make a great pass.
At this rate I’d probably rather Maguire partner De Ligt and Maz because at least he’s brilliant in the air

Yes, it's one of the biggest priorities without a doubt. A new LCB with a better physical profile is need no matter what, even if Amorim has some plan to accomodate Martínez to not be a detriment to the team when we lose the ball. I hope that's the case, otherwise the sooner we find a buyer for him, the more money we'll salvage out of him.

He was having similar problems in a back 4, the back 3 obviously exaggerates it even more but he is just very limited in terms of his mobility. Factor in the lack of height and I think we need an upgrade.

Arteta wanted him to play LB for Arsenal for a reason...what he brings in the build-up cannot be overstated IMO...but asking him to cover big spaces quickly or to win aerial duels vs players like Milenkovic...it's just exposing his weaknesses.

As is LWB… I actually think all of the pieces are there for the right side. If Yoro develops and proves to have the ball playing ability, I think we end up with Yoro RCB, Maz, RWB, Amad R10.

I’m not sure we have any of the answers on the left though.

Anyone remember how a number of folks on here considered him to be world-class and him being injured the reason for the poor results last season?
He has regressed massively from 1st season through to now. He has no spikes in his game anymore, so the traits that were lauded initially, can no longer be and then we're left with a problematic player in a backline due to his numerous weaknesses. So a lot has changed in his time here and that should be acknowledged.

Didnt do well enough on the corner, it was a mismatch but we didnt see enough effort and application to at least try and compete with Milenkovic

3rd goal I blamed him soley when I first saw it, but now I think Onana and De Ligt sold him out. One of them could easily have made contact and they both left it thinking it wasnt dangerous. He didnt react fast and clear it, but if he had it would have been great defensive play

Looked a bit lost at LCB tonight, which was strange, felt like he wasn't sure what he was meant to be doing.

I love Licha but he has been up and down since the big injury last season, he needs to get a bit of consistency back into his performances somehow.

And I doubt he’d have lasted long as a left back at Arsenal, in the better teams you are going to have to cover long distances and win duels. On the ball he is very good but it doesn’t compensate for his other weaknesses.

There was nothing Onana could do, Martinez was there and should have made what was an easy clearance but didnt

The ball went right between De Ligt and Onana as they both left it. The only reason "Lisandro was there". He was steps behind them and not an issue

He's one of the players we would sell if a bid comes in.
I love Martinez but we need a more Athletic, taller LCB that's comfortable defending 1-on-1 for this to work.
We can carry De Ligt as a CCB but we can't carry both. I would be surprised if he's still first choice next season (or if Shaw is ever fit again).

He was absolutely woeful today. First goal he looked like a boy against a man, third goal should have cleared it. He’s terrific on the ball but he’s not been good this season at all, in virtually any department. Between him and Onana, we gifted them at least two of the three goals.

Hopefully just a slump in form.

Said even in his first season where he played well that we would have to upgrade him. Think it should be clear by now that he is not a good enough CB to make up for his lack of physicality.

I just don't feel like the aggression is there like it was before the injuries. It made up for any physical deficiencies in his first season and he was fantastic.

It makes sense that injuries would affect that mentality, but it's also a problem as it was a big part of his game.

Wouldn’t even stand out in “Snowwhite and the 7 dwarfs” never mind the PL. People are jumping over his whole body at corners. I thought for a second Milenkovic buried him half into the sand the way he couldn’t move. And then the third goal, watching the ball looping over him into net like watching aeroplane flying over your head when you were a child.

We need to sell him while he has some value.

He's too much of a liability nowadays and his physical limitations aren't going to get better.

Are people trying to get rid of him while Lindelöf and Maguire is still here. Today was an anomoly he’s not this bad usually. He is short though thats an issue in itself but he’s not a bad defender in general.

No but he was at fault for all 3 goals today and has regressed massively since his injury

In a back 4, things are different and the FB will cover a lot of contentious issues whilst the CB stays pretty much tucked and relatively safe, not really having to cover acres of space if the midfielders are also doing their jobs. In a back 3, unless the CB in the middle, the flanking CB's have to cover a lot more space, face more 1on1's as well as targeted, isolated attacks if there's a sniff of vulnerability.

Lisandro doesn't look like he has the pace, mobility nor reading of the game to play as a flanking CB in a back 3. Perhaps as the central player, but a flanker exposes everything he lacks. That's before set pieces etc are factored in.

I don't think anyone is wanting lindelof to stay but more so that we need to move on Martinez while he still has value if he doesn't fit in the future plans

In my mind he's had a similar United career to Casemiro, but had quite a bit more leeway. Great first season but unimpressive since. Those initial doubts about his size and athleticism are creeping back big time.

He can't play in a back 3. Maguire for all his faults can still cover centrally in a back 3. Martinez is too small to play centre back in a 3 and too slow to play left side in a 3.

Were you around when we had two bids for Braithwaite knocked back?

Pep should be interested as he stated he was in the top 5 CBs in the world

Tiny Martinez got found out. Everyone is noticing that he can't keep up with the EPL's physicality and height and he is now being targeted
