It’s like our players are all RPG characters with preset stats. The Martinez build gives you +10 in ball playing ability but then you have -10 on pace and physicality

He used to be so good at reading situations, moving back into a covering position and making goalline blocks.

I don't understand why he was apparently just asleep while the ball slowly looped past him.

Good on the ball, but very very bad defensively.

I disagree. I have to say, he’s been incredibly underwhelming on the ball. Along with De Ligt and Yoro, he played it far too safe—no switches of play and very few line-breaking passes. It’s a far cry from what we saw during his first season when he was so much more adventurous and effective in possession.

A shocker to allow that goal to slip-in at the post he was covering. Very fortunate not to be hooked instead of de Ligt.

In the first half, it was a problem permeating through the whole team, so it's tough to blame a single player for that, since none of them were able to.

In the second half, when we were chasing, he was the main guy getting the ball into the forward line.

I mentioned De Ligt and Yoro in my post.

His passing was alright again but another terrible defensive display. He's had a fair few of those this season.

Can only assume he thought that ball was drifting wide of the post for the third goal. Weird.

Been off it all season, needs to improve

Poor season. Not been great for a while, actually. Looked so good when he came in but slowly loses his main attributes, just like most players that join our circus of a club these past 10 years.

£58 million well spent. Daley Blind was better at CB than Martinez is proving to be.

Been saying it for a year. He's massively overrated on here. I don't think he will here for much longer

Won't be one of our long-term starting CB for the reasons I've mentioned previously in this thread. You can keep ignoring his deficiencies but there's plenty of evidence just in our last 3 league games why he won't work out at CB.

He has majorly declined and his lack of height and pace is becoming more and more evident. I honestly think he has 6 months to save his United career because any more performances like that and he's out the door.

Good to see folks are finally seeing the light. He was untouchable for a while here. Decent player but not the "top 5 CB in the world" he is made out here.

With his size, pace & strength was never suited to play in a 2 man central defense in this league. Unfortunately, he doesn't look very good in a 3 man defense either.

Why Is this guy worshiped for supposedly being a "warrior" but rojo was seen as a flop?

When he's on form, he's really good but at the end of the day he's a slow and small CB. You put yourself at a disadvantage with a player like that in this league. If he was athletic he could possibly make up for it but he isn't.

We need a more PL suited player to occupy that LCB role. If Licha isn't offering high level playmaking from the back then he's of no use to us really.

He really needs to fight for his place at this point. With his physique, he was always at a certain disadvantage in this league but as his ballplaying was so good, it was still mostly a net positive. When the on-the-ball stuff is fading, this turns fairly quickly. Having said that, as we are seeing all our CBs having difficulties on the ball, it most likely is partly due to the system. We all know there isn't much workrate and movement going on in front of them, and they only can play into space when somebody makes a run. Today NFO blocked out Bruno. They didn't have to worry as much about Ugarte and unfortunately Mainoo too as they didn't do much when they had the ball. This is a nightmare for CBs, especially given that the coach most likely instructs them to make something work with the ball. Think it is more of a team failure at this point - we haven't got the whole wingback thing going, those guys should be the outballs in 49 of 50 situations, at least one of them.

I think he will really have problems in this system. He will struggle to cover enough ground and win enough 1 on 1 duels due to his lack of pace and size.

I like him, but not sure how long he has left at United.

People saying there's something wrong with him. No, this is who he is. He's not suited to a back three, same way he's not suited to a DM role. He can win in close quarters but he struggles in space and in the air. This system exposes his weaknesses. being good on the ball won't be enough to cover those weaknesses.

Watching our "hardman" center back get bullied on corners just makes the "butcher" nickname all the more cringe worthy.

This is how I feel too. He won't get the protection he needs and won't offer us enough on the ball to make up for his weaknesses
