How can you say all this after watching last season? He is most consistent defender in the Premier league.

He certainly is consistent. Also saying I don't think he is world class is not saying he's a bad or average defender. He's a very good ball playing defender, I am totally comfortable with him in the defence in a bid to gain top 4 or win a cup. But not sure we can win a league or champs league with him as a CB. Which I think is a fair statement.

To just put him down as a very good ball playing defender misses the mark. It's an attempt to downplay his defensive ability which was excellent last season. What more could you want? If he can continue last season's performances into this season, then I'm not sure why he wouldn't be classed as a defender that can win the biggest trophies.

So bizarre isn't it. If he's a 'weak link' to potentially winning the league or champions league then we've got bigger issues to worry about and that's about 8-10 other players.

Brilliant on the ball and good defensively but when you see how much of a beast the likes of rudiger and militao are as well as other top defenders, I do wonder if we can win a league/champs league with Martinez at the back. I have a feeling that as good as he is on the ball that he is only good enough to get a team in Europe but not quite the caliber to win Europe. Hope I'm proved wrong.

How much 'worse' was Martinez in yesterday's game do you think he was compared to those two?

Did you completely forget the 3-4 times we opened them up and had 2-3 clear cut chances that should have been goals had it not been for Garnacho/Rashford poor finish?

If you have worries about Martinez, you need to worry about the rest of the squad because no one is certified 'good enough' by your standards. If you truly believe that and voice that concern consistently across all other player's performances fair enough.

Defending aside, we're really dependent on his ability on the ball.
Definitely. Hopefully this Amrabat (assuming we get him) is good on the ball in that deeper area of the pitch.

All our ball progression and buildup from deep is all Licha and Shaw.

The Butcher of Manchester should cause no one other than opposing attacking players any lost sleep.

I thought he was fantastic on the whole last season, definitely don't think he's been overrated at all. The game at OT against Spurs he absolutely pocketed Kane and not many defenders do that.

Looking forward to seeing him again this season.

That actually happens quite a lot in Utd vs Spurs games. Smalling used to dominate him pretty much every time, and I don't remember Kane giving us too many issues in the few years between Smalling and Martinez. From memory there was one game he did do very well but otherwise he tends to struggle against us a bit.

Him and Varane are up there with the best partnerships in world football.

They are the least of our worries.

Do you not worry slightly about Varane's injury record since joining United? But I agree, as a partnership they are great.

Plus I can see Onana and Licha having the most touches in a lot of games this season.

Yes, fitness would be a bit of a concern. Still a big role for Lindelof. He needs to step up as and when required.

Smalling did have some good games against him to be fair. Kane always used to give Jones problems whenever they faced off but Smalling used to bail him out a fair bit.

Well we have to see how second season syndrome goes as he has been hyped to the max after playing just 9months......but there is a reason he has been hyped to the max, and that is that he was absolutely world class for us, great on the ball, warrior mentality, leader, barely a mistake, judging purely on those 9months I thihk your statement is about as fair as a charity Van Gerwen versus Stevie WOnder darts match.

Tumbled onto Arsenal fans’ twitter somehow and found out they absolutely DESPISE him.

Makes me like him all the more.

His 1-on-1 defending improved over the course of last season (pre vs post world cup). I hope it continues to improve because he's such an immense player mentally and on the ball.

I have read a few quotes from him since he joined us…and I have never been disappointed. Below is another good one. Yet more display of his character and personality. Indicates depth as a man, as a human being.

Also conclusive that he is a warrior off the pitch too. :wenger:

If only all our lot had the same application and determination on the pitch that he does, we'd be in proper contention deep into the biggies then!

Most consistent player I've ever seen. Favourite United player currently. Guy will end up and all-timer for me.

Not at his best but still our most composed player at the back. He's drawing players towards him, playing in the triangles, taking ownership on the ball but it's worrying the angles the rest of the squad, not name Varane and Casemiro were giving him.

Opposition are very clearly wising up that he's our orchestrator at the back and not giving him an easy time.

Played well. One of the first names on the team sheet if fit and in form. Nearly always is fit (barring that one serious injury) and nearly always in form.

I'm not worried about him, it's the rest of the team/tactics and for today at least, Shaw that was annoying me.

That nutmeg was

I agree! If the rest can get back up to speed we look good with Martinez being a rock and orchestrater rolled into one.

Pound for pound the best signing we've made since Van Persie for #20. I cannot believe we were thinking of buying Timber ahead of him.

Timber has looked good in the bits I've seen for Arsenal so far - and he was on the right. Looked better than both AWB/Dalot

Looked a bit rough against us I thought, but I'm not doubting his being a good player. But is he a transformational player and a leader like Martinez? I doubt that.

Been a bit shaky since pre season. Was he subbed because he was on a yellow or because he was getting run past too easily?

Easily the worst half he’s put in in a Utd shirt and that following a rather ropey pre-season. Hope it’s not a second season syndrome and he clicks into top gear soon because we desperately need his 7/10 consistency at the back.

He's role this season is slightly different. He's being asked to push up alongside Case in possession and also defend like a DM. It means a wider area to cover and it would take more awareness from him. Lindelof handled it better.
