Lionel Messi

That's a stupid move if true. Trading several young high profile players which could each give the club well over 5 years at a high level for one ludicrously expensive ageing guy, no matter how great he is, is just asking for all sorts of squad rebuilding problems in just a few years.
Shhhh

This is my favourite great player quote on Messi

Luis Figo “For me to watch Messi is a pleasure – it’s like having an orgasm – it’s an incredible pleasure.”

Yep Man City have no history. Won the FA Cup in 1904 first team from Manchester to win a trophy, most times to score 100+ goals in a season (the first being 1926/27), largest ever attendance for a home game at a home ground in 1934 (beating the record previously held for 10 years since 1924 - also by Manchester City) , only team to get relegated with a positive goal record whilst also scoring the most goals scored in the league 1938. These are all from a long time ago. I think there is a word for a long time ago?? It must be like 'history'? But it can't be that can it? More upto date - until 1973 Man City had won as many trophies as Liverpool, up until mid 1980s Man City had accumulated more top flight points than United. But I guess your definition of history means the period between the 80s and about 8 years ago which coincided with the worst period in Man City's history in terms of winning things and Uniteds best period. Before that doesn't count and after that being dirty oil money.
You must have loved history at school if all your school taught was a very unique defined period of about 30 years
(oh yeah - and just for fun Man City's first UEFA European Trophy win - 1970 Barcelona's was 1979, but again - perhaps that was before history began?)
Not the mention the biggest floodlights.

Impressed you knew all that but come on you weren't the winning machine you have become in the last ten years since the takeover.

Yes I know you won the league in 1968 and league cup in 1969 because am aware about what other teams have done

I agree. I don't care what people say, Messi is not some Falcao experiment. This is one of the greatest players to have ever played the game of football. His presence is enough to satiate most egos. A supernatural force in football.

2020 has been quite the year.

So supernatural his team got embarrassed for 3 consecutive years in the UCL.

City wants success in Europe and Messi is hardly going to guarantee them that.

I can't really see City going that route, their transfer dealings have been rather smart over the last years. Then again, someone higher up in the City hierarchy might push for it for the prestige, and with no regard to the longterm consequences of such a swap deal.

City have been a much better side than Barca though ever since Neymar left tbf. He would 100% have a better chance at winning another CL there than in Catalonia.

Their recruitment and management has been terrible the last few years and he's pretty much the only reason they've still won trophies and the league more often than not quite honestly. He's still put up absurd numbers throughout their decline so it really isn't down to his own fault hence why he's seemingly tired of carrying them on his back.

It's not obsession, more so it's difficult to stomach seeing the best player that's ever graced the game leave Barcelona for a club that got bought by a Sheikh in 2008. If you fail understand why some might see that as a reason to lose interest in this sport, well then there's no real discussion here.
Yeah, that is what I am thinking too. I can't get how Messi can go to a small club like that. He already Jason plenty o
Pep was supposed to be a football romantic and he went there. People want to be successful quick and paid handsomely for it
That's why I have much more respect for Klopp. He took the hardest job with an historical club in shambles.

Pep doesn't like a real challenge and is a money grabbing w****e.

Will never go down as one of the best.

City willing to offer 100m and Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus and Eric García. Barça insist that they don´t look at a transfer and keep their position

Wow that’s a great offer if true especially in covid market. I rate both Bernardo and Jesus. And for barca to get Messi off the wage bill plus 100 million cash can accelerate their rebuild.

It’s time for Ed to give Ronaldo a call. Offer Pereira, Mata and 50 mill:cool:

It's his way of playing that prevents him from having success in Europe these days.

Modern football at the top level is all about pressing and quick transition, whereas Messi has no workrate and tends to slow the game down as he takes the ball deep into midfield.

If he is deployed as a false 9 then I can see him being successful in UCL, since he's still the best dribbler and finisher in the world. But would he happily concede the privilege to dribble freely at City if he didn't do so for Barcelona and Argentina?

If that offer is true then that’s crazy and Barca should snap City’s hand off, I know Messi is the greatest of all time and still arguably on form the best player in the world but that’s a serious offer.

I think €100 million gets them a world class left back and right back whilst Garcia gives them another option at centre back, Bernardo would basically take Messi’s place whilst Trincao is highly rated then Jesus could be the back up striker to Martinez should then sign him so they’d have a much better squad although weaker first choice 11.

That would be an outrageously good deal for Barca, if that's even remotely true, which it can't be.

Rooney said today Messi is the goat and better than Ronaldo. It’s a sign.

That deal mentioned here is an excellent deal for Barca. Unreliable source tough.

Nice selective arguments, can you tell me between City and Messi, who has more League and UCL titles?
You will always be an oil club, it's no like you've won a league by building a team like Liverpool did recently, you just brought your chequebook, floured fpp, played uefa. The CAS doesn't make you innocent, if beyond 5 years is history, enjoy with your so called history.

Rubbish, it’s his teammates that stop him being successful in Europe. The comparisons, for instance, with Ronaldo are so flawed because younger fans missed that they did things the other way round - the best teams Ronaldo played in at Madrid were in his later years, the best teams Messi played in at Barca were in his early years.

Barca spunk hundred of millions on their squad and Messi's teammates are somehow shite?

Ronaldo was better than Messi in the latter stages of UCL because he's both an on-the-ball threat and an off-the-ball threat. Messi rarely does anything off-the-ball. People make out as if Ronaldo is a tap-in merchant but he’s actually more versatile than Messi, because he doesn't always need the ball to contribute to the team.

In modern football, everything going through one player is a bad thing and should be avoided. If you have someone who can only play this way then don't be surprised if it comes back to bite you in the ass.

Have you not been paying attention?

Yes, that's why Messi wants to leave and why the Barca fanbase want Bartomeu out, because he spunked hundreds of millions on shite.

Also, Ronaldo has not been better in the latter stages of UCL in the last 2 seasons when playing with an average team.

One of the greatest players of all time. Playing for Man fecking City.
Football has been just horrible since SAF retired. The hits just keep on coming.

If true the worst thing about it in a way is that players like KdB will stick around whereas we might have otherwise seen some of the talent walk away from them. As others have mentioned... City already had a ridiculously potent attack. It's the other players staying and the potential morale boost I'm more worried about than his individual impact on their play. From a neutral perspective though it d be awesome to see him in the PL.

That swap deal

That deal must be worth about £250m then his wages on top? surely bollocks.

Are you proud your team got relegated with a positive goal record. Ffs how pathetic is that? The only time you won the league (before the shiekhs) we won the champions league at the same year to be the first english team ever to win it. This is fecking history and heritage of winning trophies. Not getting fecking relegated with positive goal record.

Coutinho, Griezmann and De Jong are definitely not shite at the moment. In fact part of why Coutinho didn't perform was because Messi requires so much time the ball.

As for Ronaldo, he was undoubtedly best in the world in UCL knockout stages for Madrid. He's old now and has worse teammates but still scored a hat-trick to turned the game around against Atletico and would've done it against Lyon with a bit of luck. There's at least an argument to be had that he's still better than Messi now in Europe.

I know people won't care, but I don't think we can get Messi. Beyond the sporting aspect, because I do think we are a romantic club full of History, one of the most iconic club in the world and the name Manchester United is something meaningful for almost any footballer in the world.

However, Messi doesn't speak a word of English. Yes, we have players who could talk with him: Mata, Pogba, De Gea, ... not sure if the Portuguese speaking lads can somehow learn a bit Spanish, but basically, it's a tough situation. And Ole wouldn't even be able to converse normally with Messi.

Compared to that, Pep can directly instruct Messi without translations. And they know each others. That might work well at City.

But we know that Ole is old school and the United he envision is one where the team speaks English, and bonds in English. So I don't know how this will work out.

Of course, for someone as unique as Lionel Messi, maybe we should try to accommodate, if even given a chance. Which we probably won't be anyway so we can move on!

Can’t be true surely?
£1mill/week wages 4 year contract and the deal will be around a total worth of £500mill. For a player in decline.

The slight problem with this thesis is that Pep won’t let any language except for English be spoken in the dressing room or on the training ground.

You don’t think they’ll change that for Messi? He’s bigger than Barcelona. City are hardly going to keep him in check. Whatever he wants he’ll get.

Apparently he speaks Spanish to new players with team instructions but they have to study and sit English exams. It depends I guess. Is Messi really that much of a diva to insist that team meetings are translated to him and him alone? Pep only allows one language to prevent cliques and promote team bonding so it would be a risk to his ethos to indulge Messi like that.

You think Pep of all people would turn down Messi because he doesn't speak English?

I didn’t say that. I was responding to a poster who claimed that Ole would only want players that speak English and only bond in English. I have no idea if that’s the case at United but it actually is the case at City.

Im sure Pep would expect him to learn English the same as he expects the other players he signs that can’t speak it to.

Is Messi going to start learning English at 33 for a two year stay? Messi not running off the ball is probably against Pep’s ethos too. He’s Mr Barcelona and has been indulged for years at the club so it’s going to be very interesting seeing him out of that environment and if he changes to his new surroundings or if everyone has to change to him. The whole thing is fascinating.

It is absolutely the case with United under Ole, that’s how he sees the club and he’s old school, he said as much.

Messi has never been able to speak a word of English in the international world, I am not sure why he would bother but if anything, Pep can talk to Messi directly. Ole won’t be.

Messi can’t speak English? That’s baffling if true. How hard can it be to take some english lessons. Makes me wonder what they do on their free time.

The British press will be unbearable if he joins City, they'll go full **** on him.

An Argentinean than lives in Spain. Why would he have to learn English?
