While signing Messi sounds like a no-brainer, I do wonder if it's more of a gamble than people might think. The one non-Barcelona data point we have for his performance is when he was playing for Argentina, and it's generally agreed that he was a shadow of his usual self most of the time for them. He's been part of the Barca machine for, what, about 15 years now and I'm not convinced that he'd be able to make the transition to another team as easily as some people think.

I believe hell go to city and it will be a total disaster.

Very little chance of that.

I’m retrospect Sanchez was crap at Arsenal for 6 months prior to leaving, we all thought it was because he wanted to leave, unfortunately we now know his legs were shot, and over the hill he was.

Messi has lots left, Sanchez couldn’t do it physically, Messi can - it’s just whether he has the mentality to play for two years on the PL?
I still think it was because he wanted to leave, and once he did, decided to down tools permanently when we offered him that ridiculously stupid contract. Remember this, he scored 30+ goals for an Arsenal team as bad as the current one and played the role Aubergine is playing now. When a player declines, it is a slow and steady thing, not a 30 to 2 goals thing. See Rooney — the Moyes season is always claimed to be the start of his decline, but even then, he scored 17. Bale too, as he’s been declining for a while now, but still scored those two wonder goals against Pool just 2 years back.

This is why I just do not like the guy. He downed tools on us fans and his teammates, and Mourinho and Ole. Glad to see the back of him.

Ok, so it's become clear that Messi had a very long conversation on the phone with Pep before he sent his fax to Barca stating he wants to leave.

Is this not 'tapping up'? Surely this isn't morally correct?

What are they gonna do? Refer them to the CAS?

Tbf that's how almost every transfer works.

Errm didnt we do the same with Sancho - agreeing personal terms with him before entering negotiations with the club. Get over it dude, happens every day at every club

All the reports say Messi himself called Pep and then Soriano so how is that 'tapping up'?

I am a swede Living in Sweden with much less free time than Messi and can speak several languages including English. Can be very useful to understand and Communicate when your’e abroad on vacation don’t you think? He’s a multi fecking millionaire. Have millions of fans that speak English. Many of his teammates speak English. How can he not learn it? Its baffling.

I get your point but it’s pretty standard for Scandinavians to learn several languages and I guess it’s because Swedish isn’t used in any other country. A lot of the South American’s don’t learn English when they move abroad. Tevez and Valencia played most of their careers and England and still didn’t bother to learn.

Stuff like this happens all the time and rarely ever gets reported or people get in trouble.

The only time i've heard of it was when VVD went to see Klopp in person. Most of it's usually done on the phone first.

Tbh it makes sense really, why would you spend your whole summer trying to sign a player for them to turn around and say, "no thanks love i'm happy here"

Considering we went through third party agents I'd say it's extremely different!!

Usually when a manager talks to a player there's contact between the club's already.
In this instance the phone call took place before Messi made his statement to Barca.

This isn't a transfer though,
This is a player making a public statement that he want to terminate his contract after speaking to a manager of a potential suitor.
How did people feel when Pep stated he got offered Pogba in the summer?
Did Pogba phone pep up? Nah, it was his agent, that's generally what happens with transfers now, the agent gets in contact with the club and starts proceedings.

He's going isn’t he? I just can't believe he'll choose them lot over us. We got history, we got tradition, we're the biggest team in England.

No one speaks Swedish outside of Sweden so you have to learn other languages to get by abroad and English is the dominant language in our cultural sphere.
Native English speakers rarely bother to learn another language because they already speak the dominant language of their cultural sphere.

In the South American cultural sphere, Spanish is the dominant language, same thing if you already speak it natively. Moving to Spain doesn't change much in that regard.

Messi knows Pep as they worked together for years, I don't see any difference between agent talking to other club on behalf of his player and player himself talking to other club.

I mean that's a shameless dig at Ronaldo.

I've seen a few anti-United tweets from him recently.

Strange, because he was on a United YT channel not too long ago where he was basically crying about how United fans deserve better.

Baffling?
He's lived in countries where Spanish is the main language.
It'd be odder if he'd picked English up, having never intended to play here.

How is that a dig at Ronaldo, and what does that have to do with United fans deserving better?

It's undeniable that Ronaldo is in the conversation for the best player ever. It's objective.

Ronaldo played for us if you remember. And it goes in line with a few anti-United tweets he's made recently. Which is at odds with him basically acting as a United fan while on a United podcast.

Understand?

Ah the good old attack the posters "intention" if you`re unable to fight the arguments. I don`t give a shit about City, I actually would like to see them get Messi simply for the fact that I would like to see him in another league. Given that the club I mainly support will linger in lower league football for the forseeable future I am quite apathetic towards the big clubs. I don`t belittle their success I just call it out for what its down to: money. The difference they`ve put in between them and other clubs is not down to being smarter, more progressive or more innovative. They simply could afford to spend big on every freaking aspect there is in professional football.
You always pull up strawmen like bad management of ManUnited or Schalke just to legitimize that logic, if any other club had such a shitshow of transfer blunders like City in recent years you would be the first to put that down to shit management, yet because it does not hurt them financially it`s just "a setback on the road". If you have an infinite money stream you can simply afford to blunder on every instance. While for other clubs the question to hire an additional scout or to extend the stadium are big financial decisions with huge potential downsides, City don`t have to think twice, they just spent and figure out if it worked afterwards.
City spent big on every level related to professional football while still being the biggest net spender on transfers, they don`t have to consider or balance like other clubs whatsoever. But clowns like you act that they`re just the smarter kid in class that has success because its "long term vision" and innovation while all the other kids are just to dumb to comply with this strategic masterclass.

Yeah, I`m just as apathetic, I simply dislike people telling fairytales.

City had a philosophy and saw it through. They pursue this road for almost 8 years now. If you like it or not, they don't just throw money out the window but know what they're doing. They try to sign players with a certain profile that is compatible with Guardiola's style and began doing so three years before he even arrived. And they also walk away from transfers they deem too expensive, see Sanchez for example, so they rarely have these really big screw ups in the dimensions of Coutinho, Dembele or Griezmann. I also can't imagine they'd ever spent 80m on Maguire or 90+m on Pogba in a pre-Neymar market.

Yes, they spend much and yes, without a huge financial backing you've got no chance to establish yourself as an elite club, not denying that. But it isn't a guarantee. Since 2012, City has spent 866m on transfer fees according to transfermarkt, United is not far behind in the same time frame with 818m and Barca's 560m isn't too bad, either. Especially since Barca has the highest wage bill in world football. However, Barca despite all their spendings are still completely reliant on one single player and United is only now starting to look as if they could maybe become a title contender again in the next 2-3 years if they get their recruitment on point.

So yeah, your opinion is short sighted. If you take a closer look, you can't argue that their management isn't superior to that of most clubs out there. Reducing their success to their financial prowess is not fair but most people don't really care because they don't think City deserve a fair assessment anyway.

Messi is in the top three, no arguments. Pele’s inclusion could also be seen as a dig at George Best and a fair few other players in this world of subjectivity.

I understand that you're probably a bit of a narcissist. Not everything in the world revolves around United fans.

Basically, what you're saying is that Henry Winter's thought process was something like this: "How can I piss off United fans today? I know, I'll say Messi is one of the top three players of all time - and I won't mention in any way or form the player who left Manchester United eleven years ago! That will show 'em!'

Come on now.

He praises Rasford all the time and called out people who moaned about his wages.

Saying Pele, Maradona, Messi are top 3 players to play the game is hardly controversial take.

This is a reach. And a person's opinion about the top three players is literally a subjective topic.

That's just not true at all unfortunately.

Even Ole himself said tapping up is normal. Clubs approach agents, if the player is interested they chat to the manager and then decide whether to bid.

Once a bid is made it's pretty much guaranteed the player is happy to join them.

Guess if Messi wants to leave now he has to say it publicly then I think Barca will find agreement with City but there have to be players involved to make it worth €150m or so. For whatever reason I'm still expecting PSG to hijack it but they don't really have anyone (Icardi? Paredes?) to offer in exchange so who knows. Still think he's gonna stay in the end.

 what

He's literally stating he'd like to see Messi in the premier league as he's one of the best ever. take your Ronaldo hat off ffs

Weird take

Where would he fit in? The midfield is done, Fred is playing out his skin, mata has the left foot of a magician, Messi will find it hard to dislodge Martial as he looks more like Thierry Henry every passing week.
We didn't want him anyway.

I don't think this transfer is clear cut. Barca clearly feel they have a strong case to merit a transfer fee so that will stop him leaving if so. Of course he could then leave next summer for free.

And if he is to join City I think there's definitely potential for him to upset the other players due to wages unless he agrees to a 400 grand a week pay drop which doesn't seem likely given how he's squeezed Barca for every penny possible.

If they get Messi and we get Sancho I will be fine with it. Sancho might not be as good but he's 20 and going to be in the top 5 to 10 players in the world for many years to come. Messi is really about the next 2 to 3 seasons and that's him done. City clearly want that CL title.
