Lionel Messi

PSG forcing Neymar out of Barcelona was a far more shocking situation than a 33 year old Messi trying to weasel himself out.

The Neymar move broke the notion that the Spanish giants controlled the transfer market and could buy whoever they wanted.
To lose Neymar at the peak of his powers against their will was incredible.

Not to mention utterly breaking the transfer market.
not sure if serious

Really hope he stays where he is. He’s not going to win them the CL imo, but city will have.a monopoly on every English trophy if he joins.

Wouldn't worry because you showed last season at Anfield how to shut him down in a big game

While he'd undoubtedly improve our team, he's 33, would earn over £1m/week and cripple our ability to sign other players (and we NEED more squad depth).

Would love him here, but with all considered, I'd prefer Sancho
Do you realize how much we would make commercially if we signed Messi? Almost half of the world population watch football just because of him...

That can’t be true  I don’t think 3-4 billion watch football because of Messi.

Just shows how far we have fallen that the best player ever might switch teams and we are not even on the conversation..

This has been the case for a few years and it’s depressing. If the best players are available it’s Real, PSG, Man City and Barcelona.

Why do people act like Football was some kind of remote, unglamorous sport hardly anybody watched until Messi came along

I still don't see him coming to us at City.

I just get the feeling that once fan power really kicks in at Barca, Bartomeu will be off & Messi will suddenly be happy again.

I haven’t seen an exaggeration like that since Woodward claimed we had 360 million fans
Exaggeration or not, the point is clear. The only person who comes close to wielding such influence is Ronaldo, or Kobe (RIP). Thats why this is a terrible thing if he becomes global ambassador for Abu Dhabi.

But we're in a similar state to Barcelona, with them they'd comfortably challenge for the league next season and they play CL football.
Na, theyre imploding. We need a RW and CB.
Barca are literally burning down in front of our eyes. Without Messi they have a lesser chance of league glory than we do imo.

Well sourced Barca journo's have come out today to say that even if he were to hypothetically step down, that wouldn't affect Messi's decision.

Realistically, it wouldn't change much in the interim even if they brought his buddy Xavi along as they're in financial hell presently so recruitment will be tough without a firesale which the prospect of one has raised so many alarms at the club.

There's even reports today of certain Barca board members (the ones who haven't stepped down yet I assume) taking the traditional position of no player being bigger than the club and believing that Messi is in the wrong here and the president shouldn't have to step down to appease him.

The same way we have been, we've nowhere near finished our rebuild and it's 7 years in.
They were going to lose Messi eventually, that's if he goes, so their rebuild starts earlier than they thought.

We finished 33 points off Liverpool last season and have yet to improve our squad. If we put more of a league challenge up than Barca do next season, I'll happily delete my account on here.

Read on press in Argentina that Man City's Emirati overlords envision Messi transitioning to their MLS franchise in New York after a couple of years.
Makes sense in a cold business sense I suppose. But seeing Messi in anything but Barsa red and blue will be grating for the football romantics.

Messi to Crystal Palace it is, then!

But its a club in meltdown. An aging side without the funds to replace them. Constantly embarassed on the biggest stage.
You can say their rebuild is starting early but this is their rebuild. They have been trying to rebuild for 3 years now.
Its a disaster and the only player that drags them through games is on his way.
Its a club in crisis. Half of their first team is being told to go.
Not being in Liverpools league isnt a selling point foe them. Theyre done for the foreseeable future.

Nah. Not necessarily.

For one, La Liga has less competition at the top than the Premiership.
Second, Barsa can actually get rid of the idiots at the top and do a clean slate. We don't have that luxury.
They have plenty of pull with top managers and football people that would love to work there. And Barcelona is a city were people want to live too.

The big question is their debt. They need to get their finances under control.

Who was the last top manager Barcelona hired?

Christ, this place has gone to the dogs. Can’t believe some of yous actually WANT him to go to city :wenger:

Hate to break it to you but City is basically the English version of Barcelona, not in terms of what they have won and history but they have poached all the boardroom and backroom staff from there

Obviously, in terms of people. But like I said - it's sports washing. Not the same as Barcelona!

My point was that it's sad that we can't compete with that! (I totally agree that he will end up at City btw if he leaves Barca)

I agree that was a huge exaggeration but remember he has a huge following in Spanish speaking countries and the USA. ...Add the people all over the world who watch football casually without supporting any team or just during world cups.. All they know is Messi/Ronaldo.
Add the kids who follow one of Ronaldo or Messi... They don't care if we won 20 times with Beckham and Scholes.. They are just following their favorite player.

That's how we all became fans when we were kids since we were not born in the UK... We followed the superstars ..and started following their teams..

Do you think we will be on Prime TV if Messi /City are playing at the same time? Even with all the turmoil the club's gone through the last few years.. we are still on Prime TV.. but do you think we will be if City sign Messi?

Interested to know but if you were to shell out a record/near record fee, would you not rather Neymar or even Mbappe? With the latter you essentially guarantee 10 years of elite player and he has so much raw potential, if Pep can improve him he'll tear up the PL for a decade.

Hope his team can't play through your press so he has to focus on ball progression and creating for others and than said others miss a bunch of 1vs1 with your goalkeeper?

He is not leaving, yet.

I read this as an ultimatum, him or Barto.

If the board keeps him, his buddies like Suarez are also retained.

I think more will be clear end of the week.

Yes it seems a gambit for control.
The irony is Suarez isn’t the player he was and Griezmann at centre forward would probably be the better move for the club.

Ronaldo joined Juve and has disappeared from our screens.
The example is literally in front of our eyes. Has Juves matches shot up the viewership charts? And he left a 3 peat, CL legend destroying all around him.

But remember Messi if he comes to the PL is coming to the most marketed league .. not going to Italy

Are you on the wind up? Spurs... Messi... Even if it wasn't ridiculous enough for too many reasons to mention they don't even have CL football next season.
Don't think it'll happen, if he comes to the EPL, City is most likely, but I can hear Jose's sales pitch - "come and work with the Special One, record of winning trophies, big ambitions for Spurs, etc." As I say, just an intriguing thought, and Jose likes his marquee players.
