Last night was fun for taking the sting out of the sancho slog, but now the reality hits. Unfortunately, it’s nailed on that he goes to city. They practically tried to clone themselves on peps Barca, they got pep on board, the backroom staff and now Messi. I would be shocked, if he does leave Barca, if he went anywhere other than city.

Yeah I am trying to live with the fact he is going to City by the fact the club still haven't briefed walking away from Jadon

BOOM!

On a side note, where do these persistent: Messi approves signings come from? Of course senior players/dressing rooms are consulted at times but surely if he was really in charge of signings he wouldn't have signed Griezmann to compete with his "friend" Suarez? It would make zero logical sense. I mean....isn't part of the reason they're at this point, his disillusionment with their signings and ability to compete? Also, he's gotten managers sacked? Last time I checked, all the managers who were sacked deserved to get sacked?

The actual football is only a small part of the problem if he goes there. It’s everything else that’s the problem. And it’s a fecking big problem. Even if he was 44 years old it would be a problem. Messi is still the best player on the planet*, and it would make such a huge impact on that petroclub I think it’s actually difficult to measure in money. It will absolutely transform them. Neymar to PSG or Ronaldo to Madrid / Juve is peanuts in comparison. It will be the ultimate evidence that sports washing is for real as well.

Just feck this. And feck all of yous who think it’s a good thing as “we get to see him in the PL”.

The only even remote reason why Messi coming to City would be anything bar a disaster is that he'll see City overtake Liverpool again.

As it doesn't look like we're going to make up the difference with a big window, I guess that's the slim pickings we have to take here.

Yeah it sure is

PSG forcing Neymar out of Barcelona was a far more shocking situation than a 33 year old Messi trying to weasel himself out.

The Neymar move broke the notion that the Spanish giants controlled the transfer market and could buy whoever they wanted.
To lose Neymar at the peak of his powers against their will was incredible.

Not to mention utterly breaking the transfer market.
Lionel Messi moving anywhere whilst being the best player in the world is in another stratosphere to anything to do with Neymar.

Neymar coming or going is neither here nor there in comparison to a set in stone legend upping sticks and giving his last good years to another club.

Holy moly.

& some wouldn't mind him playing for City?! He'd kill us all.
'would be lovely too see him grace the PL' or some bollocks like that. Wonder if the opinion's the same when he bangs hat-tricks in our derbies..

Pretty sure he'd play for any club looking in shape to give him his first CL since 2015, AND able to pay something close to his gigantic Barca wages. That makes it a very short list of candidates.

If that was his key aim, and he's not placing a huge emphasis on himself to deliver it, then City shouldn't even be in the conversation.
Having never gone beyond the quarters, or even looked likely to.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but if he goes to City and they fudge the numbers somehow and it’s a two horse race between them and Liverpool I may actually be rooting for Liverpool. I find the whole thing a little bit absurd to be honest.

Issue is it cements City as a superpower as a team at that point.

The GOAT player signing for City, it actually shows them as a team that interests a player like Messi.

It's all positive PR for City too. When City attracted players like De Bruyne it was different, he was leaving Wolfsburg, but leaving Barca for City as the GOAT? it's a huge deal.

Parallels to when City tried to get Kaka as their first big player and he left to go to Madrid with Ronaldo, now we're a decade on and if Messi goes there it truly shows how much United have regressed.

Ronaldo went to Juventus, Neymar to PSG, the name Manchester United under SAF was revered now it just feels like it's hard to get players to come.

Messi to City really does show who the biggest team in Manchester and England are currently.

United need to seriously attract Messi and Sancho in this window, if United really are a superpower in world football, and if they are a commercial powerhouse then screwing this up has major issues down the line, Sancho is a player United can't miss out on, but Messi available now for free? allowing City to get him is also catastrophic.

Once SAF said "If United want a player they'll get him" now it really doesn't feel that way.
But money is going to be an issue for the wages especially... well whatever.

It's not over yet. United will make a bid. Give it a little bit of time. Soon reports of us making a bid will be out there. Let's see what Messi does when he has massive chests filled with gold and jewels delivered to his doorstep with a Red Devil on them.

Yeah the only ones who benefit from this are City and the world media, can just imagine what people like Souness would be like about seeing Messi in the Premier League well that's until he finally ends the scousers long unbeaten home run and City win there for the first time in nearly 20 years.

It some silly deep state level conspiracy theory. There's also the Messi picks the starting 11 one that goes around. If he did that, wouldn't his best friend Aguero start every game for Argentina instead of being being benched for Higuain? Also he was pretty upset and vocal about Valverde being sacked. As you said as well he wants to leave because he's not happy about the decisions and signings the board has made over the last 5 years so it doesn't make sense at all.

Nah I have begrudgingly accepted he's going there and just hope the fact we still haven't said anything about the Sancho deal being off as a positive sign for now

Messi to City
Sancho to Barcelona
Thiago to Liverpool

I love football more than United.

It would sting to see him at City, but having the GOAT in the EPL for a season or two is worth it. If he was in his 20's I'd feel differently. But this is a last hurrah for a living legend.

If we get Sancho, we could take Messi to play with Bruno and Pogba for rotation... it would be crazy, but why not. To feed our front 3. Crazy, but why not.

Feck off. It’s worth it?! Just feck right off.

Just move to another forum and pretend to support another team than Manchester United. Blue moon for example. We don’t need you. People like you deserve their own tagline, so we can identify you when discussing Manchester United related stuff.

Wtf did I just read. feck him. As long as he doesn't sign for us I don't want to see that guy anywhere near the PL. All that stupid GOAT talk that he isn't anyway can do one.

Seems like a proper cnut too. How often has he now threatened to leave the club if things don't go his way?

Hasn't he threatened to leave Barca before? Seems more like a power play.
The times he's threatened it in the past it wasn't plastered all over the worldwide news with club insiders all being in unison with their reporting.

Barcelona as a club weren't in the shambles they are now either...

This sounds much more like Ronaldo actually deciding to leave Madrid shortly after winning another CL despite years of threatening it for a better contract himself.

Yeah definitely has all the hallmarks of when Ronaldo joined Juventus

Did you just suggest we'd rotate Messi?

The big point is the free transfer. Remember, Juventus had to pay Real Madrid 100m to buy Ronaldo.

Even if he rakes in half a million pounds per week at City for three years, it is a mere 26 million per year, 78 million over 3 years. That’s peanuts for City.

Even if he takes home 750k per week, it would still be a lot cheaper than what Juventus shelled out for Ronaldo.

The only important question is whether this is a free transfer.

The whole argument of breaking the wage structure, affordability, etc. will be meaningless if the transfer is free.

Messi leaving Barcelona isn't really shocking either if you've paid attention to the state of the club these last few years.

We're also living in the era of Free Agency in worldwide team sport where you have unquestioned all time greats in every sport having no qualms about continuing their careers elsewhere for the better of said careers regardless of any false and antiquated ideas of 'loyalty'

We've seen it with the likes of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Cristiano Ronaldo etc over the last decade

Sentimentality has been dead in sport for a while now

You're taking some of these views a bit hard fella.

Remember 1,000s of posters pass through this forum.

There will be many who think nothing of those 50-50 scarfs, or who don't really mind where we finish.

Until we brief to the usual suspects we have pulled the plug a la Griezmann & Dybala will keep those feint hopes alive

We do have tv sets these days, pal. You may watch him playing in another league and take pleasure from it surely?

for real, man. Why would you want him to cause you nightmares for 2 years. Hes better off elsewhere in a league that has no significance to our title or cup chances.

Maybe I am. Maybe I should just be apathetic about it. I don’t know. But I think it’s a disgusting stance to have as a supposed fan. I don’t even understand how it’s possible. Do your reckon City fans feel it would be worth it if he goes to us? Or Dortmund fans if he goes to Bayern? Or AC Milan fans if he goes to Inter? Or Lazio fans if he goes to Roma?

If that’s your stance, you might as well plead allegiance to Messi himself, not Manchester United.

The debate in some Spanish papers has shifted from whether Messi will leave to whether Barcelona would want to take Messi to court for breaking contractual obligations. Some section of the press are already resigned to losing him for free.

I don't think we are capable of pulling this off, but we had SAF running affairs - we would have been all over this!

Shows how far we have fallen as a club that it doesn't even sound realistic that he would consider coming here.

I think it's very much the kind of thing Jose would fancy as a statement - whether he could persuade Levy that there would be a payback is a different matter, and would depend on Messi's attitude to Spurs as a club. Like to bet Jose would have a go, though.
Are you on the wind up? Spurs... Messi... Even if it wasn't ridiculous enough for too many reasons to mention they don't even have CL football next season.

Yeah no doubt he is one of the greatest of all time but still don't want him strutting his stuff at our city rivals

This. There has been this narrative for a long time that he's the brilliant, humble man and Ronaldo's washed up villain.

Since then enough things happened to question that I'd imagined.

Yeah we aren't even remotely attractive to him anymore which is tough to admit but that is the brutal reality

I'm more than happy to swerve the type of fan who would ditch the club over a rival signing, as they were clearly never an a genuine supporter to begin with.
You may, but you don't own the club, purely as a business venture!
