I think it's likely that Madrid are simply skint for now. They've spent €180m for Mbappe and Endrick already this summer.

We have not spend much for a few seasons now, so I doubt we are already skinned. Endrick was secured last season and Mbappe has been coming for some time now.

I think maybe RM was surprised by United and do not want to pay a high fee for a young player with 1 year left.

Real propaganda outlets have started

Remember when Mbappe signed his last contract with PSG and suddenly it came out that Mbappe was now somehow DOF and basically running the club? Madrid work quick.

Not only that, but plenty of people actually believed it.

His contract is up in 2025, Real offered around £20m given that. He's only 18 and there's no guarentee he'll adapt to English football.

Anything over 30 overpaying imo. £50m for an unproven 18 yo is crazy. No wonder Lille push him to go.
Damn, You must really hate your clubs transfer business.

Poor lad was just a young defender with high potential last week, now he has Everton dissing him and every United hating football fan making compilations of him falling over or missing a few tackles.

Welcome to the media circus Yoro, I hope he has thick skin.

You paid 100 million for Bellingham last year and quite a lot for something else the year before if I remember right.

chelsea supporters shouldn't even utter word "overpaying".

If you don't 'overpay', you don't get the player. If he had multiple years left on his contract it would still be a slight overpay perhaps, but nothing too crazy. We have done far worse in the past for players who weren't considered generational talents.

You usually have to overpay for mega talents. Especially when you have the money and the conditions aren’t in your favour. But I’d happily pay 42+8m for someone so highly regarded as opposed to 30m for Dewsbury Hall.

Yes I forgot about him.

Last time we spend a lot was 19/20 season. 360 million euros. Most of it on garbage like Hazard and Jovic. So we should be able to spend at least 100-150 more this season.

But we are in a good position. Not desperate to pay whatever clubs want for their players.

Are we back to beefing with Madrid now?

No more celebrating beating City or Liverpool
Hell Yeah!

We can call this one back for Varane in 2011ish. Seem to recall we tried to sign Benzema from Lyon too.

Now let's get Barcelona back for stealing Ronaldinho in 2005. Who are they after this summer?!

Nico Williams. He looks amazing.
But at United he might end up like Antony.

There is no point discussing if we’ve overpaid if he hasn’t even played for us yet. If he’s as great a player as is made out, any fee will appear a bargain. If he’s rubbish and we sell him in a couple of years for a big loss then it will be a waste of money. Value fluctuates constantly in football.

Unproven in the PL, sure.

I think you also have to look at the market and what your club needs.

Everton want £75m for Branthwaite and Bayern want €50m+ for MDL, who'd be on much higher wages than both Yoro and Branthwaite. United can't sign Todibo who's a good value option and does a bit of everything we're looking for in a CB, whilst maybe not being an overall better player than Branthwaite and MDL. Doesn't matter though, UEFA have spoken.

United need a starting CB, RM not so much this summer. It made more sense to spend that €62m on Yoro, especially in the long term, then the other two. RM can probably afford to wait and see else is available in a year and pay big then if they need to. United couldn't wait for that, otherwise it would be another year of Maguire and Lindelof if Martinez is injured.

I don't think United are desperate and paying Lille whatever they want, if that's what you're saying. If (as Ornstein says) they've decided he's a "generational talent" then they'll be in a position where they can sell him for at least double in 4-5 years time.

Also missing out on Yoro is much easier to swallow for Madrid than United. If he goes to United, Madrid are still likely to get him in his prime at some point. If he goes to Madrid, we'd have to wait until he's lost a yard of pace and touching 30.

If it fails, which is a genuine risk for any 18 year old who isn't a complete freak of nature like Messi or Ronaldo, then it fails. But I'd rather fail going for a generational talent than someone like Mason Mount or Antony.

United will still have flops, like any club. Hopefully a lot more success stories now with actual recruitment specialists in the door rather than simply letting the manager pick.

Nico Williams - I think we will have to be super kind and let Barcelona have him. Can't see us moving for another wide forward while Antony, Rashford and Sancho remain unsellable.

If they go for a young talented DM, hopefully we steal him from their clutches instead

Resorting to using Marca as a source

No matter what happens, satisfying as feck seeing rival outlets shit themselves over this. Liverpool, Everton and now Madrid. Fantastic.

Reading this from a Chelsea fan really gave me a good laugh, thanks.

I mean him being Chelsea fan doesn't necessarily mean he agrees with a lot of the prices they've paid either.

I’m guessing that you are having to pay around €150 million to Mbappe as a signing on fee though.

I'm pretty sure the Lile owner was more eager for this deal to go through than anyone else.

Yes, and that translates exactly to what Marca are saying, right?

I wouldn't be surprised if this was true.

I mean, if you think a club would rather not play one of their best talents for a year, think of the implications this would have on their results, and not take the money Real offered them then and there, just to lose him a year later for free - out of spite - then I've got a few things I want to sell you.

Also, the likelihood of a young player committing his development and short-to-mid term career to a club he doesn't want to move to because he's being threatened to sign for them. I mean, I'm sure there are footballer's unions in France

Given how much Mbappé is costing it's possible we didn't have the money. More likely we're also just not in the market for an expensive CB. We need cover, not a star-in-the-making. If Yoro turns out to be the new Baresi, there will be time to sign him later on. Right now we need to replace Nacho. I'm more surprised that we sold Rafa Marin tbh

This opinion is a litttle Delulu dont you think? Considering the club you are referencing as the adult in the room
