Lenglet (Sevilla CB)

Same here. Lenglet is a good prospect with a reasonable clause, but among French youngsters, Hernández and Pavard seem to be different gravy on the basis of their respective performances last season. Have integrated quite well into the French national team setup as well — which speaks to their composure under pressure.

That's Blanc-esque, and would be revolutionary in our team.

Pavard has three perplexing characteristics, he is a very calm on the ball, he is probably the best crosser in the french national team to the point where he reminds me Sagnol and he uses his body very well when he is beaten by an attacker, he puts himself in a position where he will either make a tactical foul or force the opponent to change his route. If he develops on that, he could be very special.

I think you might think differently about Alderweireld if you saw him regularly. Class act. Got it all like VVD. Who’s your top five CBS? I’ve got Ramos and Godin for two.

Don't get me wrong, I like Alderweireld a lot.

For top 4, I'd probably go with Ramos, Godin, Azpilicueta, Chiellini.
The 5th spot is too difficult to decide. So many players are just behind the absolute world elite at the moment. But it'll probably be one of José Gimenez, Bonucci, Marquinhos, Thiago Silva or Hummels, in no specific order. Maybe Alderweireld belong in this group of players, as does Manolas. If Boateng and Kompany ever get fit for a longer period of time, they're both probably ahead of or in this group as well. I don't even think Verthongen is much worse than Alderweireld.

Edit: I didn't even mention Varanë, Umtiti or Pique here. Some might argue that they're all better than Alderweireld.

A certain level of experience is good. If you are buying someone then ideally they should have proven their quality over a reasonable period of time. Most top level players do this by their early 20s. That's why most of the most expensive transfers fees ever have been for players around that age. You get the proven quality plus the physical prime. Experience becomes overrated when people use it justify buying old players whose prime years are either almost over, or already passed. Those kind of transfers are rarely good moves.

Bailly was extremely inexperienced when we signed him up and yet he was able to put our 'experienced' CBs on the bench in no time. Its a shame that injuries ended up crippling him too. We are not fine tuning our defence here but rebuilding it from scratch. Valencia is old, we've got no natural LB and our CBs are meah. What we need is quality and leadership not experience.

Has Gimenez even been that good the last couple of seasons? Seems in and out of the team and there's been no glowing reports

Totally thought this was Lenglet playing that pass. Only when I went into the Pavard thread did I think "wait a minute..."

I was another one who thought Schneiderlin was going to be the midfield beast we'd been missing for years. I've given up trying to predict who will turn out to be good for United any more. Sanchez was another one - thought he would light up Old Trafford not stink it out.
Same here.

It depends on so many factors. I guess its best to enjoy the ride.

What do you see as your best back 4 currently going into the WC? Think you have a lot of talented players coming through - both in wide positions and centrally.

Fair. Some good names there. Agree on Kompany. He’s so City which is annoying but also a top defender when fit.

Some very good names, but notice that many of them are getting older, and many of them have seem performances drop quite a lot this past season. It is definitely possible for a youngish player to make the step up to this group, and even push a few of them out during the coming season. Alderweireld might even be the one to do it, if he becomes a Mourinho machine.
Hopefully both Lindelöf and Bailly has the ability within a few seasons, and Lenglet as well, if we buy him. If he goes elsewhere, I hope he stagnates ;)

As a Noggie patriot, I would also keep tabs on Kristoffer Ajer from Celtic. He's progressing quickly, and will most likely become very, very good. Maybe not next season already, but within two or three years, I reckon he's part of a perennial CL team. Seems to have leadership qualities, as well as being a nice, smart guy. Graduated from high school with 18 A's a few weeks ago, and is already a part of the natiional team.

People would bemoan the long-ball.

It should be Mendy, Umtiti, Varane and Sidibé but I like the look of Pavard on the right and since he is a CB he would allow more freedom for Mendy and the right winger particularly if it's Dembélé. Basically I would like to see him used like Thuram was at the beginning of his international career.

He plays on the left? Then i think we should get him. Looks like a strong defender.

I really hope this is a smokescreen, I don't rate him as highly as many seem to on here.

Honestly, you could probably put together a video like that on Phil Jones last season and he'd look immense - he was exceptional until around January/February. I'd rather stick with Jones than sign a guy with possible potential who doesn't know the league and may or may not be able to communicate effectively. A work in progress isn't what we need right now, and I have faith in Lindelof anyhow, he's showed glimpses of the player he could be for us.

If we were to go down the route of improving our centre backs, for me it would be at the expense of Rojo and Blind, and we should try a more experienced Bonucci/Boateng/Alderweirald type. If we were to go for a younger player, I'd prefer Pavard or even Soyuncu, who I think has all the right tools to be a top centre half.

Yes this lad played well against us, but so did the rest of the team. Where were they the rest of the season? I want someone who will put the effort in all the season. So it is either Toby for his experience, leadership and PL experience or as I said earlier Pavard if we are going for a younger option. He looks the real deal.

sorry, came too late to this thread, any serious link with the player? just shift in the new gear in the muppet mode:-))

I know it's not going to happen, but I would LOVE this to be a smokescreen for De Ligt. Every time I see that kid play, I just can't help but feel I'm watching a future legend. He is top class already. Once in a generation talent in my eyes who is already better than our current central defenders.

I find it amusing how you quote a post that spells his name correctly, then manage to spell it so horribly wrong straight after :)
If you have dyslexia, i'm a cnut, and i apologize!

I had blanked this match from memory, but I didn't realise just now how goddamn good he was against us.

The lack of pressure he was put under when he had possession was pitiful to say the least. In that video, the one time he was put under pressure, he gave the ball away with a pass forward. Looks a very tidy player, I'd rather we got Alderweireld if possible and give Lindelof more game time.

We should loan him out to another PL side and see how he does

It'd have to be the perfect environment for that to happen. Not send him to a team that's going to be in a relegation scrap, isn't a team that parks the bus but one that plays out from the back and uses his abilities perfectly. I'd rather we got rid of Jones and one other to give him more game time.

My opinion is the same like was for lindelof transfer. I don't want another defender who will be maybe star one day. He may be new paolo maldini one day but or next season we need instant proven quality in defence.

Got a young player in Lindelof, who started to impress at the back end of last season.

Aa good as Lenglet may potentially be, what we need is at the moment is an established centre back, who will lead our back line.

I personally don't think a CB is a priority. We have enough. Bailley will step up next season. If Alderweireld is too expensive, then I wouldn't be overly concerned.

I do. Jones and Smalling aren't good enough. At this point, neither is Lindelof.
