Khedira

For the big away games at SB and the Etihad I think a midfield 3 of Khedira-Carrick-Herrera, with Carrick holding, would be very effective. Sort of midfield trio that could dominate any game.

Wasn't Khedira pictured at a game in Germany last night and left Madrid without permission to do that? If so... how can United be "frontrunners"?

He went to watch his brother play in Leipzig. He's still a plane ride away from his next club whoever they are.

Ancelotti has been real bitchy in recent press.
I think he is probably peed off at the situation Perez has put him in with Di Maria and now Khedeira has put him in with wanting more cash, or maybe he just doesn't rate him. Ancellotti is a classy guy so I think he's being pushed to breaking point with the way the club is moving without his consent. I mean the manager really has no say in anything at Real. Maybe an argument for us not having a Director of Sport or an overbearing owner calling the shots on transfers.

On the Ancelotti thing, the press were asking him if Khedira was in trouble for traveling without permission. He said, Khedira had permission to leave (which I read as leave the matchday squad) and that when a player is free, he can go where he wants.

I just assumed he didn't want to get into a debate about fines etc. Though actually Khedira is supposed to inform the club of his whereabouts, particularly if going abroad.

His problem is that he asks for very high wages, I think. Di Maria also asks for high wages, but the difference is that he actually is one of the best players in the world, unlike Khedira.

He will probably get his transfer in the last few days, when he drops his wage demands after seeing that nobody is willing to match them.

The same Khediera that was one of the best central midfielders in the world cup and destroyed Brazil, that has been a sonsistant performer for Germany and his club sides over the years? I would say its only last year Di Maria had a really really outstanding season since leaving Benfica and it was playing in midfield. Khedeira has been consistant throughout his career. Im not comparing the two players, and of course DiMaria is a major talent but I find it strange that DiMaria based upon one really good season is now being talked of like Ronaldo by many on here, and on the other hand Khedeira is so under rated. And personally I dont like Khedeira, something about him just irritates me.....but there is no doubting in my mind he is a world class central midfielder

It's his hair-face-goatee combination.

He is a good player, but he was never one of the best midfielders in the world.

Thought he was in the top 5 midfielders at the WC in terms of performance. Top 5 at the very least for me anyway.

Was he? Because I only remember him having a good game(vs Brazil) and the other 2 German midfielders were clearly better than him(Kroos and Bastian). There si no way he was top 5.

I think the worry was just that Vidal would be a bit wasted. No doubt he could do it, just he is really good going forward and getting him to be a defensive mid would be a waste. Khedira can be a good defensive mid, he's not an anchor man or someone that covers the space because like you say he's out of position a lot, but his work rate and tackling and muscle would help. Wouldn't be a dream signing or whatever, but a very good signing for the time being all things considered.

The thing was I always felt Vidal and Herrera could find a balance of one sitting when the other attacked as both have shown to be tactically good players. I agree that Khedira would add a combative element that our midfield has been missing and he covers a lot of ground, I just wonder how he will do without the top quality of an Alonso or Schweinstieger next to him to lead.

He's never going to be a player to catch the eye like those two. But I think he's instrumental in making a midfield tick. If we can get him, it's a no brainer for me. Let's not repeat the mistake of 2009 when Real were letting go of brilliant players and we didn't even bother.

Kroos and Bastian are on another lever to Khedira (especially skills on the ball), but he is very useful, and he can play in different formations.
You build team around players like Schweinsteiger and Kroos, but there is a place for players like Khedira in that team.

I am not saying he is not a good player, he's a player that always puts up a good shift and a solid performance and he will improve us for sure. I was just saying that you can't give him top wages like we give to Rooney and RVP because simply he isn't at that level.

We could mount a title challenge in my opinion.

I would have thought we would need another CB to challenge for the title but if Di Maria maintains his form and RVP stays healthy anything is possible.

I don't think any signings will see us at that level this season. It's going to be a learning curve and the top couple of teams might be out of sight before we fully settle into Van Gaal's football. A couple of new signings that need bedding in, along with the three we've already got, won't make that any easier.

Thats why getting players early was crucial..thanks Ed.

I just don't think we know enough. I guess the Di Maria thing, unless completed early by first choice PSG, was always going to be a very late thing (whether we get him or not), just like Ozil or Robben or Sneijder. Sometimes the market dictates things.

A double swoop of di maria and khedira would be very good bit of business and smart, if our 5 transfer signings are herrera shaw rojo khedira and di maria, that is some excellent ground work put in place for our rebuilding job, that means it gives VG the option to build some youngsters around these guys. That type of transfers would have seen the club gone out and strengthened our weakened positions.

Shaw and rojo - 2 players with loads of mileage, rojo 24, shaw 18, you are building for the future and of now, that replaces vidic and evra, they maybe not has good has the latter at the moment, but the age comes down, and they are only going too get better.

Herrera and khedira - that is 2 crucial signings in the heart of the engine room, considering there is nothing out there, I would have no worries seeing these 2 paired up. Plenty of energy in these 2, and it puts in the ground work for many years too come. And helps us until carrick returns, not too mention we are very thin in CM, khedira makes sense

di maria - solves problems A B and C, he solves our lack of speed, he gives us the chance to play 433, 4231, and maybe 442, he works hard covers, and there is more drive in our attacks which balances out janazaj.

Now you look at a possible lineup and competition from the signings oif di maria and khedira after august
DDG
smalling/rafeal jones/evans/blackett/rojo shaw
khedira/carrick/ herrera
di maria mata/kagwa janazaj
rooney/RVP

We are looking extremely stronger in CM and out wide, di maria and janazaj sounds pretty scary out wide, it may not match Real's wide boys of ronaldo and bale, but its still damn impressive. That is what I would call progressing from these signings, now that pool of players gives us the platform too really push on

@jojojo how do you keep track of the happenings in Spain/Spanish press the way you do? Are you involved in journalism?

For those say no to signing khedira, would you rather go with the current midfield and no signings or go into the MF with khedira???. Because I don't think there is any other MF available in the market at this stage.

I started reading the Spanish football press to improve my Spanish. Following United related stories made it easier to stay motivated. However it is oddly addictive - the multiple sports dailies, the structure of TV football coverage - it's like watching a soap opera and it's not just the players/clubs it's the reporters as well. Some of it's funny, some of it is genuinely informative, some of it is just rubbish. It is a strange addiction because I've never been interested in normal TV soaps or things like Big Brother.

After a while you start to realise that even notorious rags like Marca effectively have three different versions: a sensationalist nonsense section, a soap opera section detailing every training session/public event in TMZ/Heat/Hello cringing detail and then finally a section with real insight and some actual journalists.

I admit in transfer season I'm worse than normal because I do try and follow back all the mistranslated/retranslated, quoted out of context stuff back to their source. Sadly no one pays me to do it

And for 12 million

How are you still sane? I try to ignore marca and the likes as much as possible. Some of the rumours and stuff made up as well as the very cynical and agenda based reporting is quite infuriating and I would be in a straight jacket if tried to stay on top of it all and keep up to date with it. The whole drama aspect is one thing I hate about spanish football, but many people are adamant that it is part of the culture and should stay. Sid lowe (who is English) is one of the best Spanish football reporters imo and is quite humorous as well as unbiased. There are others too that are quite good but they are in the minority imo.

If he's going cheap I think we'd be silly to miss out on him (unless he wants to go elsewhere) provided we've not got someone else lined up. If we're going to go 352 and not signing any other defenders then I think we can use Carrick as an extra player at the back but to do that we need more depth in cm. Fletch/Herrera and Khedira for 2 of the 3 spots is at the least functional and capable of doing enough, particularly if we sign someone like Di Maria to give us the versatility we lack. Khedira has the energy to cover someone like Di Maria too to allow him to push up more.

Solid German school of precise football must come to Old Trafford sooner or later.

It will only help us.

This , three midfielders would be the way to go against big teams, specially away from home. Time and again, we have been out run and a player like Khedira with his energy would be absolutely worth it..

True. Khedeira would be absolutely perfect for a game like City, Chelsea, or Liverpool away. And even generally I think, contrary to many other people on here, I think he's very much a Manchester United player.

We all love you for it anyway. It's great. We get more from than than the twitter thread.

You need to join us on the Bloody Hell podcast one week!

All this excitement around Di Maria and understandably, I think Khedira is the more important signing (I am over the moon and fully behind the arrival of Di Maria). After spending big money on Mata, Shaw, Herrera, Rojo and even more on Di Maria, I honestly can't see the club looking at Vidal anymore, Khedira would be where the attention is in my opinion.

I would have thought we would need another CB to challenge for the title but if Di Maria maintains his form and RVP stays healthy anything is possible.
I'd rather sign 2 CMs now than a CM and a CB, I don't think the defence is as bad as people make it out to be, when they're all fit Jones, Smalling and Evans are all good players, Evans in particular. With a bit of actual protection from their midfield they won't be half as exposed as they are currently. Although if Beniatia, say, did become available to us I'd take him over 2 CMs and settle for just one good CM player.

Vidal is certainly an upgrade but Khedira would be a very good signing. Not his biggest fan but I'd be very pleased if we got him.
