Juan Mata - A Common Goal | Man Utd Women manager Casey Stoney joins

In before someone says why is he advertising it.

Seriously though, he's the nicest guy in football.

Charity is the best way to avoid taxes. Still, Juan is love
Sounds a bit dismissive of what he's doing.

Charity is ONE way to REDUCE taxes. If he gives £50k a year, that may mean he reduces his tax by £20k.... I'd rather have that £50k go to a charity (assuming they use it wisely) than £20k chucked on a huge pile of tax monies that Govt/council bureaucracy and incompetency wastes.

Exactly. It's the best way of using tax money.

What a man. Especially at a time where there's more money in football than ever. I hope other professionals get on board.

I was quite luke-warm about us signing Mata when it happened... Now I'm a huge fan in every way.

Can't fault him, always been a big fan. But considering the wages of the last few years at the top level, is he really the first to do this?

Fantastic player and man. Hope he has success with other players joining in. The world needs initiatives like this.

Why would the astronomical wages of the last few years lead you to believe that there is a greater likelihood of players being more attuned to the needs of the rest of the world?

I think he's the first to dedicate a flat % of his salary... I think others just give x amount of money every year or so. I could be wrong though.

Either way, others definitely donate more than what his 1% salary is, but he's a class act and I'd say he's doing it for the right reasons 100%

Fair enough. Also getting more people to join in on the 1% is going to bring higher donations overall I guess.

Not saying it makes you more "attuned", but if you're already an "attuned" person you're more likely to give a bit if you're earning millions than if you're on an average wage, surely.

Really nice gesture. Good to see it seems to be catching on.

Just caught this for the first time. Huge respect to Mata, Hummels, and whoever follows next  Well played lads.

You know he is still more out of pocket than paying the tax, don't you?

It's not exactly a tax avoidance scheme, he just gets the advantage of part funding his donation with money he prefers giving to thiese guys and not the government.

Surely all the big United players should sign up too? No reason not to.

Is it just the two of them? Fair play. I would guess a lot of players do a loy of charity stuff you don't hear about but a shame no one else has joined, although its a big commitment no matter what your salary.

I know. It's either give your money to the government or to those in need.
Juan would have donated his heart if he could, but all hearts in the world would cry if he did.

No it's not, you are still having to put after-tax money/disposable income of your own as well. Say the tax rate is 40%, 60% of the donated funds are still money Mata could have spent on an expensive watch if he wanted. The other 40% he was never getting either way, but making a donation means he is out of pocket 1.5x what he decided to divert away from the government and onto the charity. Ergo, it costs him real money to make that choice.

I'm sure you know this, but plenty on here are teenagers who don't have the first clue about how taxes and deductions work.

Didn't Kuyt donate like 50% of his salary to charity or something, was sure I read about it somewhere.

Wasn't aware. Danish tax rules operate differently than that (I know since I do it as part of my own company)

It is a shame that more footballers aren’t involved in this. However it shouldn’t really be football charities that the 10% is going towards. There are much more important charities that it should be going too.

Most footballers in the EPL can easily afford it without financially struggling. The players from the top Spanish, German and Italian teams can also easily afford this.

It’s a totally disgrace that they don’t do more for charity. But it’s not just them, the richest people in every industry in the world should be doing more.

It’s 2017 and there are still people in the world dying due to poverty, famine and malnutrition. This shouldn’t be happening.

More needs to be done in the richest countries in the world also. People being homeless in the UK amongst other things is shocking.

Mata's thing is not just about football though, it's mainly helping impoverished children around the world.
