Juan Mata - A Common Goal | Man Utd Women manager Casey Stoney joins

Can we just have a Mata testimonial this season, not for his long service, but in testimony to him as a person. He's a dying breed of footballer, different class.

I hope he retires here, I really do. He's such an admirable individual and footballer.

how much is 1% of his salary? I'd imagine if all the top earners in the PL did the same it would add up to a good amount.

Guy is a class act. Comes off as a real nice guy in interviews too. I hope he has a fantastic season.

The team spirit and bonding in this group seems very good. This can only help them on the pitch too.

The Special Juan! What a great guy!
Someone earlier mentioned that they hoped Juan would stick around after retiring, and become a United Ambassador. I agree, he's a tremendous PR jewel; my only worry is that he'd head back to Spain (Valencia) instead of retiring in Manchester.

Well done Juan. For all of the fantastic moments and memories that you have given to so many, this is by far the greatest contribution you have ever made. You deserve all the love and adoration that you get as a footballer, and that cannot be said of most players. A truly inspirational man.

Great Idea but the problem with this is, a lot of footballers already give money to charities that are close to their hearts. That way they know exactly where the money is going and who is getting it.

Donating to a group cause means 1. Maybe the cause isn't something that you feel passionate about 2. You don't know how much of your money is actually reaching people who need it.

Nice idea but not something that will pick up anytime soon

Anyone think anyone else in particular on Manchester united will join him?

Mata is the new Paddy Evra! Just love those guys!

I’m asking my fellow professionals to join me in forming a Common Goal Starting XI.
I bet Ddg and Herrera will be in there.

Met Juan once at the airport in Manchester while flying to London. The Spanish Olympic team were flying out from Old Trafford after the match there and I was on the same flight as them (Mata was returning to Chelsea). Lovely bloke, was super nice to everyone.

Bollox, this is just a PR stunt so the club can't look bad for selling him as he is underperforming and is going to struggle to get a game next season.

Bet it's fecking tax deductible to. Wanka.

Proof that antimata does exist!

If Neymar pledged 1% of his salary it would feed Africa for the next 5 centuries.

It's not possible for me to love juan any more than i do, marry one of my daughters please!

What a role-model! I really hope more footballers join on this.

If Tevez joins him, Trump could provide healthcare to entire US even after getting rid of Obamacare.

I see Mata as one of the most genuine grounded people in the game. I love the cynics on twitter who are claiming this is some tax exemption move from him.....like seriously, I know the game is full of people who would do that, like 98% at the top level. But I just for the life of me, doubt Mata is one of them. This is a guy who openly admits he's baffled by his own wealth.

Don't that include free dental implants? I'm sure Klopp would be interested in heading over to MLS then.

Great gesture, he's a great person to have connected to our club.

Jesus, can't people keep their negative opinions for a different thread - there are some right Victor Meldrews here. It's not about JM as a player - does positivity upset you or something?

He's a class act, and a smart fella, I like the way he's gone about this.

Under normal circumstances I'd expect Juan to have kept this quiet, but to me it seems a very clever & deliberate ploy to get other footballers to donate.
The 1% may not seem a lot, but I imagine it's an amount that most would feel embarrassed to say no to if asked , & he's openly said he wants others to follow his lead.
His aim appears to be, everybody gives a figure they won't miss, 1%, rather than 2 or 3 giving a figure they will miss, 5 % ,and the rest saying no.
