Juan Mata - A Common Goal | Man Utd Women manager Casey Stoney joins

It'll be interesting to see what he does once he has retired.

Think he'll retire from football altogether or take up an ambassadorial role at some club.

Although, I hope he becomes a coach. Think he can become a great youth team coach and teach the players technical side of the game

It's shocking that not one United player are members.

What Common Goal needs is Messi or Ronaldo to join. Everyone will then.

1% of €350k won't be missed..

We have an ex-player (Shinji Kagawa) and son of United legend (K. Schmeichel) joined as members, that counts I guess.

 Juan Mata is perfect as the club ambassador, once he hangs up his boot.

Juan is genuinely one of the nicest football players on the planet, Yes if you meet him in his restaurant in Manchester he is just the same, a top guy that really cares about te club as he proved against Newcastle and always has time to speak to the fans.

The tradegy is not only that more United players have not joined his Common Goal Cause but he has been under utilised as a right winger when he has always been our best creative Midfielder, he is a genuinely an elite creative player that can operate in the hybrid no 8/10 position and score and create goals against tight defences.

Yet Jose wants him to play as an auxiliary right back in most games, such a complete waste of a player.

Blimey. Juan Mata. A United legend. Unbelievable. Generation Snowflake is in full effect.

THE GUY NEEDS TO LEAVE, GO PLAY EUROPA LEAGUE FOOTIE VIA LA LIGA.

Lovely guy, but he isn't what United need, and never was a United player. No guts. No leadership. Few Goals. No power. United aren't some flaming charity ffs.

What’s wrong with you mate in a football world full of selfish, self publicising morons .Mata is one of the few good guys.
He has never let the club down, never caused the manager problems and never complained about being played out of position for years .
A great guy and I have a feeling he will play a big part in the remainder of the season .
Take your bitterness elsewhere

I think it would be a nice thing if they could get every footballer to join this initiative. I don't think 1% is a lot to give especially considering the astronomical wages that some of these men are on. A lot of them mat have come from tough backgrounds and i think it was would be nice to help some people who come from similar backgrounds to be able to achieve a similar level of success. I think there are probably lots of footballers who could gone on to become superstars if they just had that little bit of extra help and think how extra exciting it could make the game. 100% respect every footballer involved.

That is fecking beautifully written … it touches on so many other points too!
Eric
Agree, got me emotional reading through that article. Eric has always kept family stuff out of the public domain so when he opens up he really touches me.

Juan seems a wonderful guy too with a genuine interest and love of Manchester's history and architecture.

Casey Stoney joins

With our manager joining the movement, hopefully more of our players will follow suit

The amount (or lack of) ‘elite’ players on the members list is astounding.

Obviously many do their own charity work, but surely a few more first teamers would commit if nothing more than to supports their team mate and founder (Mata)

I worked on a Common Goal exhibition with Juan and his partner a few years back, and I was really surprised that several of his United team mates came to the launch or to visit the exhibition - the ones I met there were Herrera, Schneiderlin and Blind - but none of them actually signed up to the scheme.

It’s strange there aren’t more United or Spanish players to be honest but there are some big profiles.

Chiellini, Dybala, Gnabry, Hummels, Kagawa, Onana, Schmeichel, Traore, Werner isn’t that shabby.

That’s also with me candidly not knowing much about womens football but Rapinoe is on there and Morgan.

Klopp as well.

I expected/hoped United as a club to be a part of the movement

Mata has always exuded class, hes never bitched or griped about where he plays or if he plays at all; he does many things outside football for kids etc but never goes on about it, he is simply a very decent human being who loves United and its history. I would love to see him given a role as an ambassador in the way Sir Bobby was; Mata has the respect and admiration of football people world wide to be very successful in the role. Not many could fill Sir Bobbys shoes.

Totally agree Mata is a nice guy, gives his all etc. etc.

However, no way should he be likened to Sir Bobby as a future ambassador. His lack of success means he ultimately will be remembered as good at Chelsea and average to poor for us. Noone in the current squad should be a future ambassador based on their careers so far (CR7 may be an exception but I think he is his own ambassador).

So you’re linking success to ambassador roles? Why? They don’t need to have been successful, just the right temperament and character, showing United as a community, not just a club

If every player had Mata's attitude we might not be in this mess. Grossly misused but without complaint and the last time he had a run he gave a lot better than some of the dross that's been dished up of late. Not the quickest physically but maybe the quickest mentally. No one will convince me that if he'd been used more we'd be in a worse position than we are now. He has never shirked and deserved better than United have given him.
