John Stones | Everton say they will reject all bids

He is quite good, but for 35m or so it would be ridiculous to go for him when you can get Laporte who is superior in every aspect.

If Stones cost 20-25m then I would have been dissapointed if we didn't go for him though.

Isn't Laporte's release clause like 45 million?

I reckon we should go all in for him, he looks a real good talent and would thrive at United. At Chelsea, Terry is on his way out and Cahill isn't that great a defender, I place Smalling ahead of him. So Stones beside Smalling would be awesome for us and for English football, but LVG wont go for it as he isn't left footed.

You lost me. What does that have to do with anything

He won't play with 2 right footed centre backs so he will fight with Smalling and Jones for the one CB position still leaving Blind and Rojo going for the other.

He's class. In a better side where he has more time on the ball he'll be superb.

Hijack plan: Offer 25m plus Evans and loan back Stones for a year. Personally I think Evans is at the bottom of the pecking order for CB and that includes McNair. With Smalling, Jones, Rojo, Blind, McNair, Blackett - we've got cover not to mention Carrick in a pinch.

Not that it's going to happen but, my deluded thinking is that perhaps Chelsea have pissed off Everton so much, they'll accept Stones transfer request but, to someone else.

I wish we'd just send the goons down and pay up for Lapprte.

LVG seems to favor Blind/Rojo though, which is why I won't be surprised when we do not try to hijack this.

Maybe Laporte does not want to leave Bilbao? It would explain why no one has really gone after him.

LVG won't play 2 right footed CBs, and Smalling is better than Stones so it doesn't make much sense to go for Stones.

This is absolutely retarded.

But he's right footed. That makes him automatically useless to LVG.

It would be ridiculous to lose out for 1 of the best young English CB talents because he's right footed, McNair and Blackett don't have nothing on him.

We've already lost out on pedro and otemendi because lvg didn't really fancy them. Might as well make it a hat trick.

Stones isn't left footed and LVG wants a left footed defender to play alongside Smalling rather than replace.

Can we look at the best teams in history and see if they went for left and right footed....honest question...is their evidence to back this up. I'd be happy just looking at Italian pairings over the past 10 years....

Stones looks 2 footed to me for a CB am I missing something?
Hes predominately right footed and LVG turned down other transfer targets as he wanted a left footed CB to have proper balance. I'm not saying its the correct procedure but its LVG philosophy.

I like this idea. We really don't need another centre back at the moment, especially with the emergence of Blind, but to stop Chelsea getting him would be a massive boost, and we can move another centre back on next summer. (Jones/Rojo perhaps?)

Shrewd. I'd like that

As bad as Chelsea need a top class replacement for Terry, United would have to go head-to-head with the Blues to sign Stones.

Maybe that sort of offer would do it because it provides something Chelsea couldn't.

If I could be bothered to research this I'm sure I could prove its anal in the extreme. I mean Blind at CB may prove me wrong but I'd wager that will prove a mistake against the top teams. Then again, over the course of a full season, he may prove just as capable as he is right now. Vidic was horrible against Liverpool I recall when they had Torres.......perhaps I'm wrong....I make little sense I know.

he is a big talent - but do we really need him with Jones, Blind and Rojo as alternatives to Smalling ?

I'm not disagreeing with you on it as it makes little odds, it could perhaps be the cause of a couple of goals a season if the defender goes with the wrong foot but its extremely anal. Having Blind is a liability against teams, for example with Liverpool coming up in a couple of weeks Benteke will surely pull onto Blind everytime. Not running Blind down as he has had a great few games and done very well in that position and who knows he could actually excel there and make the spot his own. He knows how to defend and is very calm and comfortable on the ball but his lack of height and pace could hinder him.

He's the sort of talent the club shouldn't be passing up on. Him and Smalling could be partners for United and England for a decade.

Jones sadly doesn't look like he's ever going to become the player he could have been. Too headstrong, too rash at times and seems to lack the composure top defenders have. Rojo looks average and can't pass. Blind has done ok so far albeit against poor opposition.

You can never say for sure but Stones looks the real deal and an investment now is potentially an alternative to buying a cycle of centre backs to play alongside Smalling.

Who exactly? The only CB we seemed to have an interest in was Ramos, and he is right footed.

You could snatch him from us.. like a kind of anti-Pedro.

A player hands in a transfer request when he already has a deal with another club..He has a deal with Chelsea already..I very much doubt we are going to even bid for him..40 mil for a non-essential target isnt really good business at all..

Everton should hold out though..He has 4 years on his deal and has Euro 2016 to worry about on just 30k wages..they should take leaf from their Merseyside neighbours on Suarez

Evans plus cash. This lad is a bit special.

I'd be more disappointed with him going to Chelsea than losing out on Pedro especially when we need to offload Evans and Everton showing interest. He is the best young English CB and would love to see him at our club, McNair and Blackett will are nowhere near good enough for UTD, this guy is the real deal, 1 for the future. If Chelsea do end up getting him they will have a solid CB pairing for years to come having acquired 2 of the highly talented young players Zouma and Stones.
