John Stones | Everton say they will reject all bids

I am so pissed we are not trying to sign him up... Young, English and a beast of a player with top top potential... He will sort out our CB headaches for next 6-7 years (with Smalling)... In fact we don't even need him that badly this year so maybe even buy and loan him back for a year if that sweetens the deal for Everton... I am sure that would help them assuage their fans who must be pissed at Mourinho openly courting him...

Come on Woodward let's get him... This will be a Rio Ferdinand type signing... This sort of a talent comes rarely and we need to get him while we can... You have to make room for a top talent if he becomes available...

I remember when we were all saying the same thing about Phil Jones.

Might be in a minority, but neither do I rate him this highly plus I think with Blind's emergence, we're well stocked in CB department. Not a need for me.

I thought he was overpriced at 25 million so at 35/40 million it is a crazy deal, but I guess money is irrelevant to Chelsea. Any defender can play well under Jose but I still have doubts over him ever becoming a top class CB.

They are completely different players that have nothing to do with each other this sounds like the "lets never sign Argentinians" nonsense we heard after Di Maria left.

I have to admit i have never seen him play much, but is he really that good or people just want him to have a go back at Chelsea for stealing Pedro?

Your tune will change if he turns into the next John Terry. Im not saying we should go for him, but he'd probably at the least make a more reliable player for us than Jones. Not sure he's worth all that money. We have Paddy McNair. Im not fussed

Poor form from Stones to put in a transfer request this late in the transfer window.

If I was Everton I'd tell Stones to hold off for a year, find his replacement, and then let him go, while fleecing the feck out of Chelsea.

Well they just signed Ramiro Funes Mori.

Edit I originally named his twin Rogelio.

He's got the talent... Just not sure he'd be so great alongside Smalling? He's a Rolls Royce type defender much in the mould of Rio. But between Smalling and Stones who becomes the physical dominant one?

It'll be a quality signing for Chelsea though so from that aspect this one hurts a bit.

We can say Stones is a better prospect than Jones without it being a dig at Jones. Stones is just that talented. Plus given his ability on the ball you'd imagine he'd flourish in the sort of teams where that is more of a priority.

If I thought we'd play him regularly (at LCB, say) then I'd have no issue with us paying the sort of money Everton are looking for.

Can't wait for Chelsea to spunk 40m on him.

Smalling is hardly a cultured, ball playing centre half. His strengths are the defensive side of the game, which is probably why he's worked so well as a partner to Blind. Stones would essentially just be a better version of Daley in that partnership.

The thing that is bothering me is that if he wasn't english, the price would be closer to 20 than 40 million. He's certainly a quality option though, but with us being well-stocked at CB for the foreseeable future, I think we should pass on him, even though he may be a special talent.

I still think there's a good chance he stays... Apparently he's reluctantly handed in this transfer request. So if Everton want to dig their heels in I don't think Stones will throw his toys out the pram.

Among our CBs oldest is Evans at 28. It's not as if our defence needs rebuilding in 2 years or something like Chelsea does.

See I was thinking that as I wrote that post but I wouldn't have Smalling down as the big physical partner. He's certainly not in the Vidic or Terry mould. To me he's kind of somewhere in the middle.

He is great in the air like those two are but, does not have the strength those two have but, he is also much faster so like you said he is the middle.

Me either if that's what it takes.

I think the reluctance comes from the fact that he hoped it didn't come to this. That he was hoping Everton would let him leave if the right bid came in but the club weren't budging.

The right bid hasn't come in for him hence us not budging though.

Same. He's probably losing out on some sort of loyalty bonus by handing a transfer request in. You don't 'reluctantly hand in a transfer request' if you don't want to leave.

In terms of Stones himself, I really don't see how on earth he is worth anywhere near 35million quid. Only 50 premier league games and whilst he obviously has potential, he hasn't exactly set the league alight. He's going to cost more than Sanchez cost Arsenal.

Exactly he's somewhere in the middle. When we first signed him I actually thought he was our Rio and Jones was the replacement for Vidic. Actually I think I'd overrated Smalling's ability on the ball because actually he's not anywhere near as good as Rio on the ball.

I'm sure his people have been made aware that if he handed in that transfer request an improved bid will be made.

I honestly couldn't care what we pay for him, it makes zero difference to me.
I am excited about the prospect of a Zouma/Stones pairing mainly because it almost guarentees a move away from the low pressing and deep back line we typically see under Mourinho. Aggressive pressing with a high block is what we will hopefully see.

Indeed, it just puts us in a tricky predicament and a reason why i think he's made this move a bit too late. If he made it earlier on i think this would be as good as over with him lining up for Chelsea and us with a nice 40ish million transfer kitty, but as it is i think we may just be able to hold onto him. Slim chance, but possible. If he goes we have to replace him quick, because we will be having to start Browning and Jagielka against Spurs which isn't ideal, and then have Oviedo on the left which isn't ideal either as he'll be starting tomorrow and i don't think he's fully fit. If he goes we are losing the best player at the club potential wise too, in my opinion, as i truly believe that he can set the standard for PL defenders in a couple of years whereas Barkley and Lukaku will be up there but not quite at the level Stones will be. I definitely think it would have been possible to replace him with a defender that is as good as he is currently, but potentially as good as him would be near impossible. It's very irritating and i said in the thread a few weeks ago if he was going to go then that was the time because the season hadn't begun and it meant that there wouldn't be disruption to the rest of the squad with our tough fixture list. He's also put himself into a position where he can't win now in terms of our fans too - i doubt that will bother him much though if he gets a shiny big contract and is playing for one of the biggest clubs - big shame though.

EDIT: This also makes me feel a little bit how a Southampton fan must feel consistently. I was way excited for Stones/McCarthy/Barkley/Lukaku to be the backbone for a couple of years and it's probably going to be ripped from us before we even get a chance to begin.

Overpriced English defender. Will wonders never cease.
He is quite good, but for 35m or so it would be ridiculous to go for him when you can get Laporte who is superior in every aspect.

If Stones cost 20-25m then I would have been dissapointed if we didn't go for him though.
